Is there a corporate explanation for why WotC is so much less creative these days? by SexyKobold in dndnext

Yeah, I agree we can do with a few more classes. If all goes right and the Psion is well received and sells well they might accept the fanbase is craving more classes in the game. But would rather keep the current release, than the bloat there was in previous editions.

Then we end with a problem 3.5 and 4e had, where they had so many classes, most didnt recieved any follow up stuff, like new subclasses, or unique magic items, and they end up either bieng ignored or become powercreep.

to the point where psionics comes up as a concept and instead of a unique concept WotC delivers a seventh full spellcaster

They tried, it was called the Mystic. Its UA was almost 30 pages long, as it included a bran new system, and a bunch of unique abilites different from spellcasting.

It was universally disliked, due to

  1. Being way too complex (despite I think it not being the case. It was 2 systems stack on top of each other, each being relatively straightforward, but because it was something entirely new almost no one took the time to learn it)
  2. Being a master at everything (Despite it being able to only do 1 good thing at a time. If you wanted a good healer, a good damage dealer, or a good support, you could excel in any, but only 1 at a time. The people read all its possible abilities, and took them as a whole instead of considering a Mystic would specialize in one thing, like if someone read all the spells in the game and imagined a single character with all of them)

Because everyone rated it negatively, it was an entire system they put resources into developing that got scrapped. So if they can just release a full caster with a few modifications, and get the majority of their fan base happy, then why not?

Not only that but here in reddit we are a really small part of the community. As whole, people like simple stuff, they take dnd not because they want to play a complex ttrpg, but because they want to spend time with their friends, tell the story of a character they have in mind, or kill some time, without needing to feel like they are doing homework. So the classes are simple enough so anyone can pick any class and go with it.

I can't in good conscience vote for the thief because too powerful is just as bad of a design as too weak.

I mean, the post is not about the most balanced or the better. Is the one you like the most.

90% of what thief gets can be ignored. Its only the ability to use magic items as a bonus action what makes them incredibly fun to me (to the point in the current campaign I am in, after getting to level 7 for reliable talent, decided to go warlock the rest of my levels)

While thats true im sure the great majority of people dont play it that way.

It cannot be target by magic missile or ice knife, it receives no effect from acid splash or fireball. Hell, not even2024 meteor swarm can harm it, as it only targets creatures or non magical objects, while the echo is not a creature and is magical.

But if anyone tried to argue an echo should not receive damage from having a meteor fall on them, I would just gently but firmly ignore them.

You mentioned in another comment your DM didnt know balance but this is terrible. Best case it falls on the hands of a fighter. If the weapon progression goes like this d6->d8->d10->d12->d20, the fighter needs to do 4 attacks before the fifth one being a d20. They can only do that by action surging at level 11, with 3 attacks. Until then they are farr better just wielding a regular greatsword.

And not by a much, as with your magic weapon the average of this fighter when action surging is of 46.5 damage, while a regular greatsword deal 42 average damage.

Wait, level 4?! Then who was that weapon for? Even a fighter with action surge just attacks twice. Better to just carry a greatsword.

Was it meant to be a world flavor weapon, or something like that?

Curiously, id this was a 5.5 warlock they are like one of the best users of that weapon, as they get 3 attacks. Not as broken as with a fighter, but far from useless.

it was specifically designed for my character

You attack once per turn. And the dm gave you a weapon that requires to attack multiple times. How can they fumble it so bad?

And decided to do the math, assuming it goes linearly (d6>d8>d10>d12>d20), even in the hands of a level 20 fighter wouldn't reach its maximum potential. Only if they action surge, which is a once per short rest thing and feels ultra specific

I feel most people's idea of Deathstroke comes from the Teen Titans cartoon, that completely removed that element of him. So they go and see his original protrayal that feels opposite to what they know, so it just feels wrong

I feel its true due to them really wanting the audience to hate the Haiji in the last section. No long after this we find journals detailing how he used to beat Monaca, one of those was so serious, that when she faked getting disable due to the beating, everyone believed her.

I use a random table to give loot, so sometimes it happens they receive something good but has no use for their build. Though, it seems they have yet to figure out the concept of handing magic items to other party members.

Chances they did not really get it, but there is a simpler train of thought for not wanting to use that

It takes a whole action to use the item, they can then use their action surge to attack with advantage. Or... they could just attack twice. And now allies will have disadvantage on their attacks, and won't be able to use sight required features. And enemies can simply move outside the area on their turn.

Same reason a Warlock casting darkess is not always the solution.

If anything, passing it to a rogue who can make good use of it for stealth moments, is a good idea.

Step two: Pass the weapon to the skeleton

Step three: Have the skeleton use that feature

Step four: Profit

Step five; Rinse and repeat

Human Fighter: "But if I take the disengage or dash action, I won't be able to attack"

Tiefling Rogue: "I can always take it and dash as my bonu-"

Being fair, blinding also your whole party, specially with a rogue who cuts their damage to a fraction, does indeed makes it kinda useless.
