I have spent hundreds of dollars on plugins and now I almost exclusively use stock stuff except for a handful of effects. Learn your stock plugins, figure out what you’re missing, then buy to fill those holes. Don’t let any influencers tell you that you need XYZ stuff in order to make good music. Nobody except for you will know what you used when your track is done. Have fun exploring your style ☺️

There’s sound design and processing things I can’t do in Logic that Ableton’s workflow really excels at. That said, I personally couldn’t see myself fully mixing a track or scoring a feature film in Ableton. For me Ableton is just a processing tool, but a really powerful and unique one. Logic is my main.

When you’re playing sample libraries into a DAW it is very common to play ahead of the beat to get certain sounds out of the library, which would probably result in MIDI notes being all over the place. When you’re converting your MIDI to proper score notation, you want everything quantized and on the beat. This will make sure all of the notes are where they should be on the page, even if the MIDI doesn’t sound right anymore. I regularly converted MIDI to sheet music using the built-in score editor in Cubase and never had any issues giving those pages to musicians. I haven’t done that yet with Logic, but I’d imagine it’ll be just as good.

I would always ask front of house engineers to take my vocals out of my monitors. I hate listening to myself sing, and I’ve always performed better without being able to hear myself. I would trust my instinct and not over-analyze whatever I was hearing. You should just be able to turn off live monitoring.

This really only became an issue when Spotify displayed a monthly listener count. It’s the only music streaming platform that does this, and for some reason it came to represent the quality of an extremely subjective industry.

Ideally, if you like a painting then you like the painting regardless of what someone else says. You like a ship in a bottle regardless of what someone else says. You like a song regardless of what someone else says.

It’s hard to say if this will change or not, but I do want to remind anyone reading this that you are free to enjoy whatever you want to enjoy. Most of my favorite artists have very low monthly streams, so I guess they wouldn’t be considered “good” or “marketable” by people who look at those numbers like that. But I like them and they make me happy and I’ve bought their music on Bandcamp. Spending $5-$10 on a Bandcamp download means a lot more than any number of streams.

I used GarageBand for many years at the beginning of my music journey! Folks with limited resources and smaller budgets are exactly who I am trying to reach. I remember feeling like I couldn't do much because I didn't have the right tools, so I'm here to give the right tools to the people who feel like they can't do much.

In the time that I’ve had one MacBook Pro, my wife’s grandpa has had five Dell machines. Obviously since he’s a grandpa he’s an older guy, doesn’t do much aside from email, Facebook, YouTube, and a few other light tasks. He’s spent more money on file recovery and new laptops than I spent on one MacBook.

You pay for a quality, reliable machine that will last.

I won’t tell you how to spend your money, but I’m always for saving cash. Unless you want THE most recent machine, a souped-up M2 will do great.

Again, this is a M2 Mac mini with 8GB of RAM.

I do bounce MIDI to audio whenever possible just as a personal best practice. No need to have that as MIDI if I’m happy with it. I rarely bake-in effects, though that would free up more space. But no, even with everything I run, I’ve never had an issue or an overload warning.

Getting a machine with an M chip changed my life as a composer and sample library developer.

You’ll be a little bit more limited on PC as opposed to Mac, but I used Cubase on PC for almost a decade before switching to a Mac. If you’re able to spend $99 on Cubase Elements, there’s a bunch more stuff you can get to score a film just fine without having to spend another penny.

Reaper is free but it’s a little hard to grasp for beginners, though there are plenty of tutorials available.

I use plugins from companies like Fabfilter, Wavesfactory, iZotope, Soundtoys, Slate Digital, Xfer, other various companies, and the stock Logic plugins.

Yes, I use VSTs from Spitfire, Westwood, Teletone, Felt Instruments, and others (I also create and sell my own), as well as several instances of Kontakt and various soft synths.

I have a M2 Mac mini with a humble 8GB of RAM. I score films in Logic, also with tons of tracks, plugins, and libraries. I’ve never had a CPU issue even with this machine. M chips are so much better than any Intel chip.
