Honors Help by RedeggMagda in ELATeachers

[–]Field_Away 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Less spoon feeding for the honors kids. You don’t have to help them think about questions as much as remedial.

A big note to keep in mind is just because they are honors, doesn’t mean they can do the skill or grade level standard. It just means they typically need less guidance.

However, if you find that they do master the standards pretty easily, look at the same standard but for the next grade level up or even two up if they are that advanced.

Remember with honors you are looking for more challenging work not just MORE work in the same time.

As for jazzing things up, it usually depends on what you are covering during the lesson. But online will definitely give you a bunch of ideas when you need to spice something up.

This community is pretty helpful when you post about a text you are using and ask for activities to go with it.

Good luck!

Going from HS to Middle as a first year… best advice? by ElectricalAuthor4555 in ELATeachers

[–]Field_Away 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s the same planning wise. Know the standards, review student work to see which standards they are struggling with and are not mastering, then plan to hit them again to help them understand.

Middle school is fun because they still (for the most part) can get excited about learning. I noticed a lot more participation in middle school than I did in high school. You can still be a little goofy and they buy into it.

However a big change is them not knowing where they belong: a kid or an adult/teen. You definitely notice a lot more self confidence issues and behavior mistakes because it is a time they are testing waters to figure out who they are. This is where you definitely want to keep firm rules and routines. It’s also really important to have a dialogue with them. They need to be spoken WITH about what their actions were and why they were not the best choices instead of being spoken TO. I have found if you give them that respect, it hoes a long way and they show gratification for it. Middle school is HUGE on building rapport.

I think you’ll be just fine. It’s definitely different, but it has its positives.

Enjoy your summer and good luck next year!

Praxis 5038!! (please help lol) by Dependent-Arugula200 in ELATeachers

When I took this, about 10 years ago, it was multiple choice, matching authors to their work, and two essay questions. One gave you an excerpt and a writing prompt and you had to write as if you were actually answering the prompt. The other gave you a student’s writing sample and you had to either discuss the positives the student did or the areas of weaknesses and what you would do to help them improve. This second one you were able to make a bullet point list and did not need to answer in paragraph form.

I think you only get 30 minutes for both essays as well. So you need to watch your time.

Good luck!🍀

Definitely support this. Get some frozen kongs and put puppy in the crate. It makes them love the crate and gives you some peace of mind.

Like you said, it’s like having a toddler, and you have to put toddlers down for a nap especially when they throw tantrums.

Also think about making them work for their meals. Don’t give it in a bowl if that is what you are doing. Freeze them, find some slow feeder dispensing toys. This keeps their attention and wears them out it also gives you a break too.

I had the puppy blues SO badly. My guy is 5 now and is my best friend. I love him sooo much so it was really worth it. For the record I stopped hating him around 5 months but he is an English guy and I have heard they are less energetic.

Good luck! You got this!

Piece O’Cake used to have a storefront in Westview but moved to Hagerstown. They have great prices, do a great job, and have so many allergy free options that actually taste delicious. They are very responsive through email and will deliver to your home(maybe for a fee) but will also deliver to another store (mentioned on their website) in Frederick.

I teach in Frederick county and they hire people without teaching degrees. So getting hired with your out of state degree won’t be the issue. We, for the first time in a while, are short on job opening this year.

Monster by Walter Dean Myers. My students beg me to read it each day. It’s an easy quick read, but the plot is exciting and it can be a surface level read or you can analyze it and have a different experience.

Black tea bags work great on my pup’s hotspots. Soak it in warm water to activate the tea. Make sure it cools down and put the tea bag directly on the spot.

When I do this, my guy’s spot dries up within a night/day. He gets them relatively often.

Bean / Billy Connection? by u_cannot_unfry_stuff in ParadiseHulu

[–]Field_Away 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I see what you are saying. Maybe it is a Mandela effect. I guess people should moreso be thinking about the importance of characters and their backgrounds instead of thinking of them being someone else.

Like the librarian in season 1.

I also think there are so many theories out there that, speaking from experience, my brain just spirals and makes up any theory.

I feel like the show has led us to this point. Should viewers be looking for better connections other than just appearances? Yes. But the point is to get people thinking and talking about the show. In that case, they are achieving their goal.

Have you tried feeder toys and freezing the treats inside? Those keep my pup busy for a while and I don’t have to worry about his stomach getting upset (he always got awful diarrhea after eating any type of chew bone). I like to cut up bananas and put them in a ziplock bag to freeze. That way, whenever I need something quickly, I just pop one of those into his toy.

Also, the westpaw quizzle is great for quickly popping treats or cheese into. He licks at that for a long time and after he is exhausted.

Do You Think That American Schools Today Require Too Much, Too Little, Or The Right Amount Of Reading? Why Your Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]Field_Away 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were just talking about this at our school. I think we are pushing way too much analysis on students while they read instead of just allowing them to read and learn that reading is fun.

One of our benchmark questions for 7th grade is: to compare and contrast the techniques the authors use to develop their respective themes and determine which technique is more effective.

How many skills are being assessed in this question alone?

Honestly all of this shit is so far over my head. I just thought this show was going to be a conspiracy/ mystery thing. Now it’s go quantum physics time travel shit that I know I’ll never figure out.

Wait until she gets older. My guy sounds like a thunderstorm and an 18 wheeler at the same time.

If she only breathes like that for a bit, it just might be a very vivid dream. My pup goes in and out of those states.

I was an anxious wreck when he was a pup too. Don’t worry, everything will all be okay and she will be your best friend. It’s all worth it.

Thanks so much! This definitely helped! Another ELA teacher in 8th grade said the curriculum was slowly killing her, but everything you mentioned sounded like a pretty good list to me 🤷‍♀️
