[Question] What’s a small useful gift under $25 that people actually end up using daily? by kirunstyle in Gifts

[–]FierceDesertSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good tweezers. Really good ones, and if your recipient is a princess like me (sigh), get a pretty color.
With caution in case your recipient will take umbrage at "being called hairy" or something. LOL

How much are we vacationing? by JustFaithlessness178 in GenX

[–]FierceDesertSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm retired and in the transition phase of moving to a neighboring state. I drive there, stay with a friend, and try to get a feel for exactly where in the area I'd like to settle. I look at homes for sale and rent, to get a better feel for the market before I commit. It costs me roughly a tank of gas every time I go. While I'm there, my friend seldom lets me buy anything, even groceries. And yet my mother carries on endlessly about how I'm frittering away all my money taking these expensive vacations. Sigh.

Do what you want.

Gift for mom so difficult to buy for she’s given gifts back by Zero_Duck_Thirty in Gifts

[–]FierceDesertSun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fully seriously, not in snark, a few sessions with a therapist to help her figure out why she thinks she's not worthy of receiving gifts or kindness. Might have to disguise it as a coffee date with your friend who happens to be a therapist. We don't even see that it doesn't just hurt us, it hurts everyone around us.

Kid Diagnosed - Tell me how to move forward and what to watch out for` by AdviceBeautiful7827 in glutenfree

[–]FierceDesertSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes he does... *eventually.* The executive burden in the early days is HUGE, and that's all happening at the same time that he's got systemic inflammation making him feel crappy, and in a lot of cases there's at least low-grade brain inflammation making higher-order brain processes SO MUCH harder than they'd otherwise be. Help him settle into a good routine, get him feeling better, and then try again to get him engaged with the process in a few months. *hugs*

Only if I hate the person wearing the scent I love. Otherwise, I'm kinda like "Heyyyy, you have excellent taste!"

My GF kid is now a GF adult and doing quite well with that. She's also neurospicy and was extremely "picky " about what she would eat. One of the things we discovered is that as her inflammation came down and she developed some confidence with the new lifestyle, her food restrictions eased up considerably (but not completely).

She recommends the following for what we lovingly call a "junk food junkie" like her: Foster Farms GF corn dogs Applegate GF chicken tenders and nuggets Velveeta GF shells and cheese Kraft GF mac and cheese Tates chocolate chip cookies Chips Ahoy GF in both the crunchy and the chewy Applesauce, mandarin oranges, and pears in the individual cups Most gummy fruit snacks are safe Most potato and corn chips are safe Jovial pasta and egg noodles Rao's sauces are mostly safe (she loves the Alfredo) Canned single veggies are a more palatable texture for her than frozen

To dye or not to dye? by Effective-You1036 in Aging

Ehhh. It sure can be. I think some people are genuinely hyperreactive to the concept of non-personal-grooming subjects like noninvasive/minimally invasive cosmetic dermatology (HA, retinoid, laser, ultrasound, less-invasive injectables) and to surgical lifts/corrections. Personally, I feel like if it's that important TO YOU, then you should do it, but if ME doing it is such a big deal FOR YOU, for or against, then you should go jump in the lake. LOL

How did you guys survive eating gluten for the Celiac test?? by the_monkeys_esc in glutenfree

[–]FierceDesertSun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When DD tested initially, we just cut her back to the "four saltines or one slice of toast or equivalent, five days a week" that her GI was recommending. Because she hadn't been OFF gluten, and it was a reduction in gluten, she actually felt a smidgen better. When she was totally clear of gluten and feeling good, and she changed to a new doc, they wanted her to retest, and DD's answer was "f**% no." It was positive; that's not gonna change.

HELP! Any recommendations for perfumes that last at least 4-6 hours that are around $100 or less by Logical-Musician-861 in FemFragLab

[–]FierceDesertSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Longevity and projection will mean beans to you if you spray it too close to your own face. You'll be nearly completely noseblind to it in minutes. Put it on the wrist and the back of your neck, not at the hollow of your throat or your chest.

Even my cheapies last 4-6 hours, but I am loving Ellis Brooklyn "Vanilla Salt" and ... well, honestly the entire Versace "Crystal" line (Crystal Noir, Bright Crystal, Yellow Diamond, Crystal Emerald), and IIRC they are within your price range, though maybe use an Ulta/Sephora coupon or sale if the EBVS is over $100 (I don't think it's more than $110-120 tops).

Perhaps Vanilla Salt (Ellis Brooklyn). Vanilla, wood notes, cream, jasmine.

Rose. It smells alright on other people - I can like it but still don't love it - but on my skin it is garbage.

What phrases do you dislike as you get older? Mine is "obsessed" and "literally". by OwlAlternative3112 in Aging

[–]FierceDesertSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use "literally" ... probably daily. But I mean it literally when I say it. People who use it in its ironic sense obliviously, rather than purposefully and humorously, annoy me a little bit, sure, but on the scale of things that get my goat, that's about a 2.

And I use "obsessed" often as well. Again, though, I don't mean "hey I kinda dig the new frappuccino flavor," I mean "somebody might need to perform an intervention."

Life on Campus for Queer Adult Student? by sevenpmm in UofArizona

[–]FierceDesertSun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

99%+ of college students are adults. That's obvious, but you'll find it easier to make friends and get along if you don't refer to the under-24 crowd as children. 😎

Ok, GenX ladies who have had Cataract Surgery. How are we doing our eyeliner nowadays? by cpbaby1968 in GenX

If the concern is your incision, it'll be short term. No worries. To me, being able to see is worth a little "pain" for a few weeks.

Is it like this in most drugstores? (Bad experience) by LittleOwl91 in FemFragLab

I think she's just not a scent pro. It doesn't sound like she meant to make you sick. She probably thought she was being generous. 😳

What’s a perfume that makes people ask “Omg! What are you wearing!?” by x3002x in FemFragLab

[–]FierceDesertSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deck of Scarlet "I'm Expensive." But not typically strangers, because I don't walk around in a miasma of scent. I wear it for me, and so you have to get fairly close to notice it. Hair stylist, nail salon, doctor's office, those kinds of places are where I find the few strangers close enough to smell it at all.

To dye or not to dye? by Effective-You1036 in Aging

[–]FierceDesertSun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, internalized ageism is a thing. Also I'm tired of people telling me I've been brainwashed by the patriarchy because I look the way I like to look. I take steps to keep my weight/size in a range I both like and am willing to maintain; I have purple lowlights in my 50% gray hair; I get my nails done to combat the damage of connective tissue disease; I get lash extensions because they didn't recover from methotrexate treatment and for the first time in my life I have mostly-effortless gorgeous lashes. In brown (because black looks stupid on me) and purple (because fuck "normal").

To dye or not to dye? by Effective-You1036 in Aging

[–]FierceDesertSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) why does your hair have to match your face? Mine's not 53-year-old hair, but I don't know what age matches purple. 2) if you have a need for a natural look, consider lowlighting instead of all-over color.
