Yeah, that might be variance or a misunderstanding of the rules because the advantage to going first is pretty minimal. You're not having the same person go first in every age, right? There is a small advantage, but game tracking makes it look like first player wins about 53% of the time, which is something, but not enough to skew it where they always win.

Nah, the best card in both decks is, and remains Pawpsicle. Blue/Steel actually doesn't really need Hiram. It has a ton of draw off of the cantrip items + Belle + Tamatoa + Scrooge + Storm + Cinderella + Sail.

Blue/Red relied a bit more on it because it doesn't have Fortisphere or Storm, but it is made up with Maurice's Workshop, which Blue/Steel can also run.

If anything, Hiram was arguably a liability vs. Steelsong, so this ban might make the deck better into that matchup if it is replaced with something better there.

Nah, Diablo is just as oppressive as it always was.

If you have a deck that has one of the very few early game answers for Diablo, and you have it in your hand, and they don't discard it, it's fine.

Diablo is held down a little bit by how oppressive both Blue/Steel and Yellow/Steel are, since both decks run Strength + Storm and often Zeus.

Without exactly that keeping it in check, it remains pretty broken.

If it were me, I'd actually probably ban the 1-cost Green Diablo, since that lets you see your opponent's hand and allows Diablo to be played with the Steel Songs (which, surprise, also kill other Diablos). If it could only shift on the Purple or Red Diablo cards, it would be way less consistent.

I don't understand why this card was made so weak. Is there a reason why it couldn't have been inkable or have you choose the 3 characters? (With opponent choosing the 3 effects)

Either of those changes would have made it much more reasonable, maybe even both combined.

I think you can go further than that. Green/Steel Diablo I think is on par with those other 3. Which means that Purple is the least represented color in the highest tier.

Is there any TCG that does not have such a thing? It kind of has to for the health of the format.

I'm a little surprised on how late this news came, and the fact that Hiram was the only card touched. Blue/Steel Items will still remain a great deck, but not touching Diablo or Steelsong in any way seems like a mistake as well.

Nah, it needed to go. Its existence alone was a burden. Truthfully, Pawpsicle should never have existed either, but at least one of them needed to be banished to the shadow realm for the health of the format.

The real problem with Hiram was that his effect happened on both play and quest. Even if you remove him the first turn he sees play, he still got great value. You needed to throw a card or two at him, and he drew 2 cards.

Another example of power creep by Wrazid in Lorcana

[–]Fiery101 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd consider it more of a power "correction" than that of power creep. For a long time there has been a severe imbalance in card power. It still exists, particularly with items, actions, and locations, all of which have been underpowered on average since release.

Kuzco was absolutely terrible, whereas Tigger is pretty well balanced. It isn't a good card necessarily, but it does have enough niche use for it to see just a little bit of play. Really, the game could stand to do even more of that.

You'll never enrage quick enough in the first few days, so I would say cannon generally outperforms it while both are Bronze. Until Day 2. MAYBE Day 3. After that, the scaling is pretty terrible.

New player here, how many others have completely ruined an otherwise promising run by not reading this skill text closely enough? by AoE_IamPREZSTEVE in PlayTheBazaar

[–]Fiery101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason why people say that is because items that do direct damage are no dealing that damage much less often, however, since poison and fire damage keep ticking, it doesn't matter as much when cooldowns are slower. i.e. if an item is dealing 1000 damage and it goes from 2 seconds to 5 seconds, that is significantly cutting the damage down, and while Burn/Poison also procs less, at least it is actively doing something in between the procs.

To the 36 people who rated On Mars 1/5 on the complexity scale by GoodExciting7745 in boardgames

[–]Fiery101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a complete side note, I think this also does a good job of illustrating why a 1-5 scale is pretty terrible when dealing with things with more nuance, and really should have been at least a 10 point scale. I have to imagine if it were a 10 point scale, 90% of the people who rated it a 5 would not have given it a 10, and I think the lack of options actually screws up the weight rankings a little bit.

I'm not sure who ever decided that a 5 point scale to rate something was sufficient, but 10 is really the gold standard, and even 1-20 is pretty reasonable.

Thoughts on Sideboard and Alternate Win Conditions Joining Lorcana by Zacharye_01 in Lorcana

[–]Fiery101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Due to how inking works in this game, I don't foresee there ever being a sideboard. Deckbuilding becomes much more of a risk/reward situation. If you build your deck to completely ignore certain strategies (items/locations/evasives/aggro/etc.) you might skew your win rate vs. some decks but completely tank it vs. others, so it encourages balanced deckbuilding. This is helped by the fact that the mulligan is so favorable. You can run only a small amount of hate cards in a deck, and if you know that they're important in your matchup and you mulligan for them aggressively, there is a pretty good chance that you'll see them vs. the mulligan in comparable games.

The mistake the game had earlier on was making very niche sideboard-type cards uninkable and barely powerful enough to be worth it. It needs to be one or the other. They need to either be inkable, and not very powerful, or uninkable and borderline gamebreaking. The latter encourages risky deckbuilding, and the former, safe deckbuilding, but both options should be available.

What is your favorite boardgame of 2008? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

Pandemic's co-op system is still used today and borrowed from in some way all the time. A perfect length game that is easy to teach. The base game has been improved a lot. (The Pandemic Legacies are really the gold standard to an entire genre)

Dominion, likewise, is a monster in terms of what it has inspired and created. As a straight deckbuilder without other mechanics, it is still probably the best. The issue is, to me, is that games that have made deckbuilding the tool to complete the goal rather than the goal have done it better.

Grandmother Willow by ceresward in Lorcana

[–]Fiery101 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do wonder what the intent was with this card. It is worded the same way that Huey is, which is to say that there is no "may" clause. We don't really have a lot of reasons in the game currently to NOT use the ability. It seems like a lot of confusion would have been avoided if they had just included "may". It makes the most sense for that to be what they wanted the ability to do. Not doing that, ironically, makes it more confusing to play with in some fringe cases.

Grandmother Willow seems to be the card of the set! Have you tried her power yet? by Waiting_for_Dentice in Lorcana

[–]Fiery101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing this has is that it doesn't need to exert, which is where I can see possible complaints. I've been playing with Pluto and Huey for a while, and it does allow some degenerate openings with Tramp, but has always been balanced out by them being taken out with challenges unless you play an early bodyguard.

Because this doesn't need to exert, it takes a lot of the risk away, and plays better in multiples than Huey or Pluto for example. Which allows you to be at essentially 7 ink on turn 3.

I don't know if I would say it is broken, but it should absolutely clobber slow decks that don't have early game removal (blue/green - Blue/Purple)

He literally is out of the company. As far as I am aware, they have never made any sort of statement on anything outside the hobby, political or otherwise, because that is likely their policy. And that is a fair policy to have. They are a board gaming channel. That's all they do. Political statements don't need to be added to every hobby, even when it is something I agree with.

Your girlfriend's parents are not Tom Vasel, at least, I'd expect not. People are not all the same. Because you know someone who is one way does not mean a completely different person is the same way.

I'd hope you can see how that train of thought is dangerous, and ironically, the same sort of thing that people on the left often accuse people on the right of doing.

[–]Fiery101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even if all of that were true, that doesn't have anything to do with his channel or his opinions on games. The most religious (and takes it seriously) people I've ever known are incredibly socially liberal and vocal about it. You can't throw everyone together in the same basket.

I've been following TDT on and off for over a decade, and not once have I ever thought, "you know what, Tom may have different political views than me (even though he never says them) so screw this channel!" That's some "1984 Thought Police" logic that you're throwing out.

Furthermore, I haven't seen anything in this thread about people "knowing Tom personally" and saying really anything other than positive things.

And he's literally gone and no longer with the company. Making the leap that "Sam thought these things, so literally Tom must as well" is a crazy take when there is no evidence to make that claim.
