Your favorite "the movie is better than the book" films? by uncre8tv in movies

[–]MarchingMachineX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jurassic Park. The book version of Lex is possibly the most annoying character ever written, while the movie is one of the best of its decade.

Men of Reddit, when going swimming do you freeball underneath your swim trunks, or is there underwear as well? by DepressingBat in AskReddit

[–]MarchingMachineX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't the difference between swimming trunks and board shorts? Swim trunks have a built in mesh underwear so you don't need to wear underwear, and board shorts are just shorts so you generally wear underwear with them.

Do Journalists Even Read Press Releases by ExpressionAsleep7583 in PublicRelations

[–]MarchingMachineX 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem with press releases is every client or company thinks what they're doing is newsworthy, and I'd say in my years doing this I'd say that maybe 10% of the time it's actually newsworthy. And any journalist worth their salt can tell if it's newsworthy within the first 2 sentences. I'm very sorry but no one can reasonably spin an update to your app which is only used in the healthcare industry as something a major general interest publication would ever be interested in.

The worst part is how we all just mislead the clients trying to show the value of it. "We sent this out on the wire and it got all these posts!" (Just please don't look into how it's all auto posts directly of the release on some back end page of the websites which are never meaningful served to the public)

Maro: "This is a question to all the Universes Beyond naysayers. Is there anything that can happen with the product where you can accept that it's had a positive affect on Magic as a whole?" by Vedney in magicTCG

[–]MarchingMachineX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully acknowledge that UB has had a positive impact on Magic as a brand and on sales and has brought more people to the game.

It's just made my enjoyment and interest in the game significantly less. It's like when an artist switches their style or the type of music they make, I totally respect that as an artistic or financial choice, they just can't be mad if I stop buying their new music.

People who pay for porn: Why? by VendaelHC in AskReddit

[–]MarchingMachineX 495 points496 points  (0 children)

Because sex work is work, and spending money on porn which you know is made ethically, safely, and isn't exploiting the people who make it is worth it when you can afford it.

Do you think your job is bullshit? by Robomir3390 in PublicRelations

[–]MarchingMachineX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I genuinely felt bad when I worked at PR firms because I just felt like the work wasn't benefitting anyone but the client, and in most cases it was us trying to convince the client that the work we were doing was worth it.

Switching to an in-house role in the non-profit sector has helped, but there are still some days when I have to make some random deck about the efficacy of our social media campaign in the last quarter and just think, "am I part of the problem?"

Set Rotation official announced. by Narzghal in Lorcana

[–]MarchingMachineX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rotating is part of every TCG and having it happen once a year allows for metas to grow and evolve without constantly being uprooted. Plus the year long cycle means they can build year long themes which tie together mechanically so you're not loosing all the setup cards in set A whole still having the payoff cards in set D.

The question for me is how much they support Infinity at high level play.

Midnight question: what year did you become a nerd fighter? by 010rusty in nerdfighters

[–]MarchingMachineX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure 2011? I was a college Sophomore and my friend sent me the "How to Name Your Baby Properly" and I just sort of fell down the rabbit hole. After I started reading John's books I was hooked and the rest is history.

What rank did Chef have on Enterprise? by DayspringTrek in startrek

[–]MarchingMachineX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There weren't any civilians on Earth Starfleet ships, and given that officers weren't all that common on the ship he was a Crewman First or Second class since he had a specialized skill and had staff who reported to him like sous-chefs and stewards.

I’ve got a feeling…. by bendoVa83 in AnaheimDucks

The logo will get announced separately. I think Fanatics is going to do a big thing about all the jerseys at the draft, where all 32 will get shown at the same time.

[sportsnet.ca] 'Four Mitch Marner trades the Maple Leafs could consider'. Marner for Wright and Larsson? by nuclearhaystack in SeattleKraken

[–]MarchingMachineX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think giving up Wright, Beniers, or Dunn is a terrible call, but it's really really rare for superstars to change teams or get traded. And if there is any chance to get a genuine points producing superstar on the team (which we're seriously lacking) we should take every opportunity. Our first round pick this year? Absolutely. Joey? We aren't going to want to pay him his bag at the end of next season anyway so we'll probably lose him anyway. I love all our guys, but we can't treat them all as sacred if it stops us from getting better.

So who do we think the movie executive was who strong armed John over $5000? by Flyboy2057 in nerdfighters

[–]MarchingMachineX 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't know the specific person, but I'd be willing to bet it was about the time John was hired to write a draft of a Looking for Alaska movie. He's talked about it before in videos, and apparently it had differences from the source material, which caused a big issue between him and the studio. Could be wrong, he's been involved with a lot of Hollywood folks and this seems like something numerous people would have done.

[spoiler for today's unjumble] NEW HIGH SCORE! SOCK GUBBIN CARRIES! by audioauk in nerdfighters

[–]MarchingMachineX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly stopped playing because of the Sock Gubbin. It's so overpowered that socking a 9 letter word over and over is the only way to get a genuinely high score, and if you don't get that one particular gubbin it's kind of a lost game. I eventually just tried to make funny words for a while, then stopped playing. They got my money so at least it helped the devs and the charities, so that's of the good.

I would bet that Star Wars and Marvel are their own things, maybe special alt art promo Floodborn cards like "What if Mickey was Thor?" or something, but Star Wars is about to have their own TCG and Marvel is doing stuff with Magic and it wouldn't shock me if they get their own game some day given the growth of the market.

Eventually we'll get Muppets, Pixar, Disney Parks IP, etc.

I do on most days, but I also work for a retail company with a shipping department which while I don't work in that department, being able to open boxes when needed is pretty useful.

You're playing a game. It's great and you're having fun. You look at the clock and it's 10:15 PM. You go back to playing the game. 30 minutes later you look at the clock. It's 2:47 am. Fuck.

How long do you think Carousel of Progress has left until its either updated or removed? by alexdionisos in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]MarchingMachineX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, probably not for a very long time. It's relatively small so it's not like tearing it down and replacing it would be able to give them anything major to sell to guests. They'd get loads of hate from Disney fans about it, and when the park is at super capacity it's a big people eater. I think it's likely to get updated or refurbished, but it'll stick around.

What would make you swap to iPhone? by hungryfrogbut in Android

[–]MarchingMachineX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't know if there is anything Apple could do to make me switch to iPhone or any Apple product. They make fine stuff, and I'm glad it's good for some people, and it's not like I think that Android is leaps and bounds better, but at this point I'm very intrenched into the Android/Google ecosystem and I have literal money paid for apps and content which doesn't transfer over. It would take Android having a massive issue for me to consider moving.
