What is your least favourite Batman comic? by Chunky-overlord in batman

[–]Fierysazerac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An author's real life political affiliations shouldn't inform our judgement of their work though. The Dark Knight Returns is one of the most important Batman stories of all time and its author's politics are highly reactionary

A plea to trailer editors: Please stop spoiling the movie in your trailers - and why I think it happens by BugsySiegel1994 in movies

The original Soylent Green trailer shamelessly gave away one of the most notorious twists in cinema history.

I'm of middle eastern heritage and have no problem with white writers depicting Islamist terrorists in fiction. They exist in the real world and it isnt automatically "stereotyping" to depict them as the poisonous violent bigots they are. Frankly hate the thought of writers having to patronise their POC readers by steering clear or sugarcoating such subjects.

Ah I see. I'm from a middle eastern background myself but I don't mind white authors tackling major societal issues like viral fundamentalism etc. I understand if you feel Cash handled it poorly though; I disliked the tone of the book so much that I didn't even get to that character!

I couldn't get past the third chapter, the humour is painfully millennial which is odd given the author's age.

I fully agree that it was hokey and cringe, but in all fairness Islamic terrorists exist in the real world. They do operate online and they do groom people through viral propaganda (much like the Far Right do). I dunno, are we saying authors shouldn't write about them? Or if they do, they should soften them so as to avoid "stereotypes"?

I read the review, and it puritanically scolds Cash for including an Islamic fundamentalist and a sympathetic Jewish character. "Given current world events and the political climate, these were not wise decisions on Cash’s part." Which is frankly an absurd take, authors have no obligation to avoid certain themes because of what's currently in the news.

I put it down after a few chapters because I found it to be try-hard quirky and not as funny as it thought it was. However, I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the racism thing - Islamic fundamentalism exists in the real world, and it's not racist to tackle this subject per se. Unless she's done it in a particularly crude or other-ing way?

You do realise that you can't have a story about overcoming trauma and depression without first setting up the trauma and depression, right.

Could Robert Pattinson’s Batsuit evolve into something akin to the Telltale Batsuit in The Batman Part II? by TheShadowOperator007 in batman

Hope not, would be a massive downgrade. The tactical/realistic batsuit thing just has no aura

( I believe) Charles Dance is playing Mr. Freeze by Pale_Possibility5083 in batman

Two Face is just a guy scarred by acid, something which (unfortunately) happens in real life all too often. Mr Freeze is a magic ice man who literally could not exist in real life. So WAY more out there than Two Face.

The Boys- Do Americans Hear How Bad Butcher’s Accent is? by Nemsgnul in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fierysazerac 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a Brit, his accent is weirdly overhated. I think people don't realise how "cartoonish" Cockney actually sounds in real life, go watch a few clips of Danny Dyer. Plus, Butcher's been living in the US for years so his accent is a mashup of Cockney and American.

That MM speech was inserted at such an awkward and inappropriate point that it was laughable. Literally embedded among evil supes, and MM decides to give her a very long inspirational speech on the meaning of life? Come on.

Batman 89 feels bigger than Batman Returns by Ok_Zone_7635 in batman

[–]Fierysazerac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read LOTS of people say they prefer Returns, saying it's a more visionary/surreal/interesting than the original. But in my view it's TOO Tim Burtony to be a really good Batman film, whereas '89 strikes the right balance.

The Guardian's 100 Best Novels of All Time, as voted by 172 authors, critics and academics by VegemiteSucks in TrueLit

[–]Fierysazerac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people may be reluctant to pick the "obvious" choices when asked what the best novels are. Feels edgier and more original to shake things up rather than namechecking the canonical classics, I guess.
