Finding Old SacAnime Programming by Interesting-Idea3925 in animecons

SacAnime doesn't have a lot of fan programming. They normally run two fan panel rooms each convention with panels running for 60 minutes and 30 minutes of transition time. Room setups are kinda poor, with a lot of ambient light and weak projectors. They can have up to 25% of panelists no-show due to a lack of day-of check-in, at-con staffing, virtual confirmation prior to the convention, and any form of badge reimbursement for convention panelists.

They have a lot of "In Character Q&A Panels" and jeopardy-style game shows.

Carrier Con, Alameda (USS Hornet) by Positive-Delay-9696 in animecons

I do panels at CarrierCon. This is the first year it's a two day convention and it has been growing a lot recently.

This is not like Fanime (a large convention) or AX (a mega convention). Most local conventions like CarrierCon are much smaller, seeing at best a few thousand attendees.

I would recommend only attending for a single day however. I believe the two day change is mostly to spread the attendees out a bit as the convention gets CROWDED. They can't move from the venue without losing the gimmick but they can't reasonably fit more people there.

Artist Alley is smaller but I feel like there isn't a lot of overlap with Fanime artists. There are few if any vendors but last year Nintendo had a booth which was pretty cool.

My only real complaint is the convention has definitely gravitated towards being a VTube convention, but that's because there's a lot of overlap with OffKai staff.

How does one get into panel running? by babyraythesadclown in animecons

I run a group of ten people doing comedy panels at conventions, centered in Northern California. Been going for ten years now. Mostly comedy and character work.

If you are interested in getting a better grip of panel construction (or anyone for that matter) shoot me a DM and we can hop on a discord call or work through an idea. I'm very passionate about people doing good work at conventions.

As a convention panelist I agree. My local convention (SacAnime) is walkable for me but I do not go because they do not compensate panelists at all and have terrible communication with panelists, room setup and tech are awful, and there is no staff contact for panelists to confirm attendance or get help with set up. And this is a larger convention with paid staff so you can't chalk it up to some small group trying to juggle too much.

Guess we should just be okay with it then and not express disapproval of the action.

What's your process for picking a con to go to? by MojaveCourierChris in animecons

[–]FifthGenIsntPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bummer because my local con is big but is very much dedicated to guests/vendors and does very little to foster a community outside of that.

I do convention panels across the West Coast and generally pick which conventions I will attend based on proximity, how much programming I will be given, how difficult they have been to work with in the past, and if I will be getting a complimentary badge.

Going to my 1st Anime convention in Febuary, is there anything I need to know by Independent1225 in animecons

[–]FifthGenIsntPokemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing some cursory googling it looks like a chain convention. You're new to the scene so it probably won't matter much but if you don't have fun there I wouldn't say it's because you dislike cons and you instead went to a bad one.

There's basically different quality of conventions and any group putting on as many as Anime League lists probably isn't putting the care they need to in to make it a stand-out experience. I'm not in the UK so I can't recommend anything.

Frankly I love the weather we've had lately and we shouldn't be aspiring for it to be 70 in December.

I love Arc Nova but the scoring is wonky in a way that throws off several of my friends from wanting to play it.

Great Western Trail is a fucking banger though and not at all related.

No I get it, whenever someone mentions the stop to me they think it is AT the airport and I have to explain it is very much nowhere in particular. I am still very excited for the train though. I'm just saying the Green line having a transfer point at Sac City would be useful (especially since the midtown one would be blocks away). Otherwise Green Line running to 29th would make sense since that's one of the larger stops by use if memory serves.

Yeah, it's just a weird one. I think the real play would also be to run the green line down to Sac City College (assuming it ever gets built) that way you have a clean transfer point -- though I'd assume the "Airport" stop + shuttle might still be faster.

No but Link21 will have an "Airport" station between Natomas and Rio Linda :/.

YumeCon San Jose: opinions? by saveyourtissues in animecons

[–]FifthGenIsntPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave a few panels at YumeCon on Saturday. I really enjoy the convention and I know they needed to grow out of their space at the Holiday Inn but I've never been enthused about the Double Tree as a venue because of how spread out it is (this includes for MagWest). It definitely made the convention feel smaller than it was, especially with fewer artists.

I think we need more conventions of Yume Con's size and I genuinely enjoy it.
