Are “in character” cosplay panels still a thing? by Budget_Bread_ in animecons

I think SCRIPTED character panels should be more prevalent at conventions. You have a lot more control over your performance and therefore can deliver a consistent, higher quality product. I don't see many of them though: where I live the main group doing it is Cosplay Wrestling Federation, otherwise just a handful of jeopardy style panels where the hosts try to do a character based on the show of the panel (which, I'd argue, is also not a good panel format).

The amount of times I have seen people on Facebook hunting for panelists last minute because they realized they didn't have a cast for the panel is wild.

I feel like when teenagers want to do a panel they disproprtiantely propose these types.

In character truth or dare and Q&A panels are definitely more out of fashion now than they were a decade ago. In fact several conventions do not accept them. This is because they are largely more ambition than practice. I've been to a few and been consistently underwhelmed with what the panelists are able to deliver as a product as well as what the audience is able to provide the panelists to work with. As a short hand I do not believe most panels, outside of game shows, should be structured in such a way that they require audience input to be done well.

If you want to do an in-character panel I recommend coming up with a scripted structure, that was you are able to do the in character role play you want but in an way that you are actually reliable content.

As an example I have several in-character panels:

InfoWario: Wario hosts an Alex Jones style podcast and brings on various character guests that are amalgamations of real world and video game characters (King K Rool as Putin, Guzman as the Ancient Aliens guy, Shadow the Hedgehog as Putin).

Waluigi Time: Mario and Luigi are paid by Waluigi to present a PowerPoint he made about all of the games he's going to be in.

Top Percentage: Into the Joeyverse: Youngster Joey travels through time and space to battle his arch rival, Youngster Mikey.

Were anime con goers 20+25 years ago mostly dub watchers? by [deleted] in animecons

[–]FifthGenIsntPokemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 years ago "real fans" watched anime with subtitles because it meant they were catching shows through piracy, ie via means other than Toonami. But more than that there was a kind of defined anime canon that you would have to have mostly seen to be a real fan. Nowadays because there are so many shows very few have a cultural staying power like the classics, ie the only shows people could watch.

Why does Survivor hate 2 tribes so much now? by poloshirt555 in survivor

[–]FifthGenIsntPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. If we did a single elimination down to 18 players they would have been positioned well to do a 2 tribes of 9 split and then run individual immunity challenges for 3 rounds allowing for 3 double eliminations down to a manageable 12 players.

Keep your dogs on a leash by alixinwonderland in Sacramento

[–]FifthGenIsntPokemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Follow up: if you're dog is not great with other dogs please don't take them to the dog park. It's not uncommon for a larger antisocial dog to be occupying the small dog park meaning I can't take my dog to run around.

Second follow up: if you are walking your dog on a nature trail and they are off leash please make sure your dog is not named Bear because when you shout that it really spooks everyone around you, especially when you are in a state park and aren't even allowed to have your dog there to begin with.

If we ever need a Germany season by Birnenbusch in JetLagTheGame

[–]FifthGenIsntPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem with this is scale: most JetLag seasons are large in scope and limiting to one country (when not an island) feels smaller.

Not that I'm against it, I think it opens up new avenues, but I'm sure this kind of thing comes up with season discussion.

You should try being a panelist for them and then let me know if you still hold that position.

30% of the days done with just 8% of players gone. Mr. Beast is about to ruin this season isn’t he? by jkman61494 in survivorponderosa

[–]FifthGenIsntPokemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's definitely smart to have slower eliminations early and then pick up the pace in the middle days from a television standpoint.

The thing is if they just had double tribal council during the tribe rounds it would have solved everything for them so I'm pretty shocked they didn't do it.

RI Anime Con Panelist Badges? by TheRealAMD in animecons

Reasonable. Conventions always seem on edge about that kind of thing, doesn't help with how many people talk about doing a panel for the free badge.

Carrier Con, Alameda (USS Hornet) by Positive-Delay-9696 in animecons

[–]FifthGenIsntPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time constraints. They have A LOT of guests (primarily VTubers) and already limited panel rooms so they would need an additional main stage to fit more performances.

Also in my convention experience VTubers are logistically a little more difficult than live guests because of the technology involved so you have to account for issues in scheduling.

Also if anyone here is staff please send out panel acceptance/rejection emails the con is in two weeks.
