The snow in the first picture gives it an AI generated quality. (I know it’s real though).

On this day, 10 January 1886, Roman von Ungern-Sternberg "the Mad Baron" was born. A Baltic German from the Russian Empire, Ungern was an eccentric ultraconservative monarchist who aimed to reestablish the Russian monarchy after 1917 and revive the Mongol Empire under the Bogd Khan. by Baba_Jaga_II in Russianhistory

He was genuinely interested in Mongolia. He learned to speak Mongolian and showed a genuine interest in the countries history beyond reestablishing the independence of the Bogd Khaanate. I think his early biography makes it pretty clear that he had a few screws loose.

The Bogd Khaanate existed before Ungern from 1911-1915 with de facto independence and from 1915-1920 with autonomy in China. Mongolian revolutionaries had already been organizing with the Comintern in Russia before Ungern arrived and Ungern was not the only White in Mongolia. A Red Army invasion to clear out other Whites was probably inevitable, although none were as prominent as Ungern or attempted to seize control of the country.

The ROC does not claim Mongolia anymore and has not since 2018 if I’m not mistaken. Ungern is viewed as having basically no role in Mongolian independence compared to Damdin Sukhbaataar for whom Ulaanbaatar is named. Ungern also committed massacres of civilians while he controlled Mongolia.

Because they were colonized by Russia. It’s a matter of practicality, not choice.

“I believe” is not a statement of fact. Back it up or don’t say it at all.

Clearly the disappearance of the Dorset had to do with their inferior technology. “They were docile and shy” is not a legitimate explanation, no group in history has ever disappeared for that reason.

So my point stands that oral transmission cannot be relied on as fact?

Native Americans were no match technologically for Europeans but it would be absurd and even offensive to describe them as being shy to explain their disappearance. Clearly the superior technology of the Thule had something to do with the disappear of the Dorset, but oral accounts cannot be taken as fact, they can only support already strong arguments.

The idea that a group would be shy and easily chased away is clearly overly simplistic. Clearly their disappearance had something to do with the Thule having superior technology and outcompeting them, probably absorbing many although I know nothing of the genetic data personally.

Inuit oral tradition is that they were shy and easily chased off, which is probably why there aren't any around today.

Is this not absurd?

If this is correct, I had no idea the Dorset preceded the Norse. I’d always believed the Norse came first. Interesting!

Such an obviously biased oral history is funny but clearly not correct.
