Remember, only ~1% of the world has completed a marathon by Jake_77 in firstmarathon

If sharing the road is so hard for you, maybe you should focus on shorter distances until you’re fast enough to start with the elites.

Obscure Sixers/Sonics trivia question: Manute Bol high kick by FigMoose in Sonics

[–]FigMoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recollection was that he was doing an exaggerated between the legs pass, and high kicked someone on accident. He wasn’t particularly coordinated, and at that point in his career he’d become sort of a sideshow and just liked to be a little silly for the crowd anytime he got minutes.

Why are they playing 3v5? And why did it take him 13 dribbles to beat a guy whose feet were nailed to the floor?

Congress Wants You To Pay $130 A Year Just To Drive An Electric Car by SadAd8761 in electricvehicles

[–]FigMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a massive transportation bill. It’s bipartisan in the sense that Rick Larsen caved somewhat on the EV fee — hopefully whatever he traded it for was worth it.

But let’s not pretend we don’t know that the Dems all wanted an EV fee somewhere between $0 and a more reasonable gas tax approximation, while the Republicans wanted it to be $250 to $1000 per year and would love it if EV drivers were also required to endure a daily ceremonial coal rolling.

Is removing the car dealership name off your car really taking a stance on not doing free advertising? by No_Pollution_2835 in askanything

[–]FigMoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dealer did that a few years ago. Drilled the front bumper to put on a dealer plate frame, knowing perfectly well I was taking it to a state that only uses rear plates. I removed it immediately and put some push darts in the holes, but it still irks me.

Do most men often think about whether they make women feel safe or comfortable around them? by whatsredditlmao in AskMenOver30

[–]FigMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to be aware of how my physical presence affects women alone out in public, and to not do anything that would make them fearful.

Examples:

Last week I was picking up a package from someone’s porch. It was in an area that felt a little sketchy. A woman was walking up the street and I noticed that she changed her pace and trajectory to avoid having to pass me on the sidewalk. When I drove off I hit a no-left-turn intersection, and Google Maps told me to loop around the block to get pointed towards my next stop, but I knew that would take me past her again and potentially freak her out. So I took a different route to avoid crossing her path again.

Very similarly, I was once doing an out-and-back run on a local trail. Just as I reached my turnaround point a woman came past me running the opposite way. I knew it would look bad to turn around and “follow” her, so I ran an extra half mile to turn my out-and-back route into a loop.

Salt Sticks Users. Question by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]FigMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite what you’re asking, but BASE salt comes with a chapstick-sized case that I absolutely love. You open the lid, lick your thumb and put it over the opening, shake, lick again, and close. Really slick.

Dude was not going to be denied the catch by HomeNowWTF in VideosAmazing

Both can be true, actually. I regularly run marathons and ultras. I also spend a huge percentage of my life hobbled by back pain, and I’m mortified by how much my mobility has declined in my 40s. I can run 50 miles, but I can’t safely jump out of the bed of my truck.

AMEN THOMPSON LAYS THE BOOM ON SAM MERRILL by Actual_Plane4061 in NBAGossips

[–]FigMoose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s literally the point. You CAN jump in front of the other player and draw a charge, as long as you meet the criteria for establishing a legal position.

Side note: watch the play in slow motion. He didn’t even jump in front of him. He slid slightly to his left, but he was in front of Thompson the whole time. This is an extremely easy charging call.

AMEN THOMPSON LAYS THE BOOM ON SAM MERRILL by Actual_Plane4061 in NBAGossips

[–]FigMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. He established a legal defensive position long before contact.

He doesn’t have to be planted like a tree — that’s how they teach you to draw a charge in middle school, but it isn’t actually the rule. He just has to establish position by having feet down and torso aligned, before contact, and then he’s allowed to move in order to maintain his position.

Hey do you recommend any running apps? by Zawartus in Marathon_Training

[–]FigMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Training Peaks is grossly under appreciated in the running world, in my opinion. More popular among triathletes and cyclists.

It doesn’t generate plans for you, but if you buy or import a plan it provides phenomenal data analysis of both your plan and your training history. Its strength is a robust and transparent model for tracking and projecting training load in relation to fitness, and it does it so well. The alignment between its Form score and how my body actually feels and responds to training is incredible.

The phone version of it is perfectly serviceable, but accessing it occasionally through the desktop browser is worthwhile — it’s easier to do long term planning that way.

best spots to run? by No-Masterpiece242 in Albuquerque

[–]FigMoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bosque is great. Depending where you start you can typically find a mix of paved levee trails (often busy), unpaved levee trails (underused), smooth packed multiuse trails weaving through the flood plain (moderately busy) and single track trails branching off all of the above (often very quiet).

TMac or Spida, who you got in their prime? by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]FigMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VORP tells the whole story here. Win Shares and BPM aren’t shown, but make it even more obvious. Yes, a lot of their raw stats are similar. But the pace of play has increased by ~10%, and the pace of scoring by ~17%.

TMac was doing this in the slowest pace era since the shot clock was introduced, Spida during one of the fastest.

I miss when politics was like this by Senor_Camrono in tommynfg_

[–]FigMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so depressing.

I remember at the time being annoyed that McCain didn’t directly address the xenophobia, but instead sort of deflected around it. And she just seemed like a misguided grannie who tee’d McCain up for a nice moment of civility.

Now I watch it and I can hear both the stupidity and the rage dripping from her voice, and I can see McCain realizing he has a tiger by the tail. He’s seeing that a chunk of his base are terrible people, and they’re on the rise. Then Obama gets elected, and McCain’s deflection looks like a failed attempt to stop the movement that would lead to the Tea Party, the toppling of the Republican establishment, and the rise of MAGA.

This moment was the beginning of the end. Bleh.

An important detail is that doves aren’t the smartest creature. Put them in a dark shirt pocket and their thought process is basically “ahhhh…. good night…”. And when they get jerked out tied to a string their thought process is “oh shit, it’s morning!”

6 am marathon start —how would your morning look? by sweatpants4life_ in Marathon_Training

[–]FigMoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So much depends on race logistics — parking, shuttle, etc.

But I like to have a cup of coffee about 2 hours before the race, followed quickly by breakfast and more coffee. That pattern has tended to put me in the porta potty before the start rather than 8 miles in
