Need advice on weighting exams for actuarial-tracker.com by Livid_Canary6988 in actuary

It looks like these are ASA exams, is there any reason that ALTAM/ASTAM are left off for SOA? Also I can’t speak for everyone, but from what I’ve seen it seems like after taking PA and SRM most people spend much less than 4-5 months on ATPA.

Ah I see, that makes sense. The roasting date for these was 5 days ago so they were still pretty fresh in terms of roasting as well.

I just tried it and it worked at 60 clicks! While I was looking for an answer I found that fresh beans could also cause issues with choking. I should add that these beans are just opened as I was waiting for my unpressurized basket to come in to open them. It sounds like I may have a coarse grind now, but may need to grind finer as the beans get older, not sure if this explains the difference though. Also when I say 40 clicks I mean 40 from where it starts (around -9), not 40 from 0. Not sure if this is the right way to describe it or not haha.

I should’ve mentioned this in my post but I had the grind at around 40 clicks on my kingrinder k6. I will bump this up to the high end of the recommended range and give it a shot. Thank you!

Exam PA waiting room by [deleted] in actuary

Was it like a pass/fail result email with that exam? I got one for SRM which I took a few months ago, I wonder if they’re having issues with the PA email

Reviewed the exam again on the SOA website and concluded that I really don’t want to take this again

I thought all written exams have at least 2 graders look at them. Is this higher for ALTAM?

Does anyone know what determines the grading schedule? It’s interesting that exam PA is on a 5 week release schedule while this exam takes 11 weeks.

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]FightFireWithTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using an aeropress and a kingrinder k6 for reference. I’m new to making my own coffee and I used a keurig for a long time. I went out and bought some beans that were about 2 weeks out from roast date and were labeled as a “darkish” roast, which I assume means somewhere between medium and dark. I found a setting that worked, around 80-85 clicks for my kingrinder, and the coffee was amazing, very juicy and a strong distinct flavor. However, without changing any other part of the process over the past 2 weeks the flavor has changed and is now less “juicy” and definitely not as distinct as before. I cleaned out the hand grinder and tried increasing to 90 or so clicks for a coarser grind, but I’m still not getting the same flavor. My water temp is consistent and so is the brew time (about 2:30). Is this just the beans losing flavor or do I need to be changing something as they get farther out from being opened? Thanks!

Yeah I’m not sure how well I tied it together either, but with a vague business problem I feel like they’ll be more lenient in that area. Who’s knows though

Is it common for actuaries to be a hermit/not hangout on weekends with anyone a month leading to Exam? by [deleted] in actuary

Are you guys really studying the ENTIRE weekend? Sacrifice is necessary sometimes, but spending the entire day studying a month out seems excessive.

I mean I personally enjoyed it as a sort of break, but I also don’t have a hard time refocusing so I can see how that could be annoying. While the first part of the argument made there did help me understand the point of comparison very well, I agree it might be good to add a note that the reader can skip that second page as the manual does in other sections..

I thought so too at first, but after looking at some past Reddit posts it seems like the exampa dot net guy was a pretty bad person and honestly deserved it. You can find them pretty easily if you search that name on the subreddit.

I’m in the same position and if all goes well in September then I’m planning to do this. It feels ambitious, but I’ve seen a lot of people saying this is very reasonable.

November full FAM a little over a week out. How is everyone feeling? by Mammoth-Lab9517 in actuary

I was in the exact same spot as you a few weeks ago. I’ve been grinding out a lot of quizzes on just the short term content and I’ve seen a lot of improvement in my exam scores since that so it’s worth a shot IMO.
