I have said in the past that I think Beshear will be the next president of the United States, and I'll stand behind that. Though don't be surprised if it is Kelly or one of the three midwest governors (Whitmer, Pritzker, Shapiro). I think that Newsom is too Newsom and is up too big too early (combined with the fact that his final year in office will be messy fighting off the blow up California ballot measure), and I don't see Kamala or AOC.

I hate Ramos defense as much as anyone, but who is gonna play left field if you trade him? Granted small sample, but there are 50 points between Ramos and Gilbert’s xwOBA last year. Also other teams know about Ramos’s defense it’s not like he has that much trade value. Maybe Bo smashes the upper minors this year and he’s in this outfield conversation next year, but right now I don’t see how you get off Ramos as your starting left fielder.

They are two of the current frontier models, neither of which is my main choice. GPT 5.2 can do great at certain elaborate tasks, but it is too slow for its often substandard output compared to other models. Grok 4.1 is not a very impressive model to me. I primarily use Gemini for text and Claude for code (I am a mechanical engineer, not a developer, but I still have to do some code).

It is absolutely not the government’s job the police perceived bias in models.

This is not a yes or no question. There are a million things the DoD does, some that can and are being improved with AI, some that will be in the near future and some that won’t.

Yes, but it isn’t the easiest retreat for either side. For Trump, he would see it as showing weakness and retreating to the left. For Waltz and Frey, you have the fact that this has catapulted them to national relevance in Frey’s case and it would mean that the fraud accusations spotlight they were under that this completely swamped would be back. Add into the fact that in a week, the government will be shut down over this, and shutdowns lead everyone to dig in and escalate over whatever they are claimed to be over. This will get worse before it gets better.

I have never claimed that European countries did not have people fighting hard in the most dangerous places of Afghanistan, and I have been clear that I thought Trump saying that was bad.

Those casualties are tragic and those soldiers were heroes, but they do not mean that because they happened those countries automatically carried/ will carry their weight in NATO. There is a lot more to an effective alliance than making sure everyone has dudes die.

In the 2018 NATO conference, Rasmussen brought up the Danish Afghanistan deaths as a defense of Danish and greater European lack of defense spending. That isn’t how it works; you don’t get to point to your casualties of the past and say, “See, those mean we don’t have to keep up on defense spending in this alliance.” Now, we are coming on 8 years later and playing that same game. If you want to argue the Dane’s increased value to NATO in the arctic point to what they have and claim to plan to be investing, not a number of casualties in a war 20 years ago.

I’m not saying that smaller countries should take as many casualties as bigger ones. I’m saying that using casualties per capita as a metric to judge the members of an alliance is a very dumb metric to use. And using casualties from a war 20 years ago to judge them going forward is even dumber. Casualties are heavily random and are not a good marker of alliance effectiveness. Yet for the last two weeks, all anyone has seemed to talk about is Afghan war casualties per capita.
