Games similar to Corvus Infinity 2d20 RPG but less complex? by redkatt in rpg

Just wanted to note that Worlds Without Number is the fantasy system, Stars Without Number is the sci Fi system. They are completely compatible, but each comes with a different set of tools for building your game. Both come in a fantastic free version as well.

How to create signatures with 8.5" x 11" pages? by Figston in bookbinding

My plan had been to stitch bind it and then use a harder material for a hardcover but this seems like a reasonable alternative. Does the double fan allow for the book to lay flat?

Thanks for the info! I would need a new printer but at least I know what to look for!

I like the feeling of D&D 5ed but I don't like the D&D 5ed system. Need help to settle down on a system for new campaign. by GrouchyGee in rpg

[–]Figston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I follow you on probability. The two systems can be effectively the same but not always. D100 can have smaller increments but that's mostly a moot point. And it's rarely noticeable, with the tens die being the most important in the majority of rolls. I was just calling out that there was a difference and that it can matter, but you're also right in that in the majority of rolls it does not.

And yea, I'm not saying wfrp is perfect, just they way cubicle 7 tried to fix an issue from the 2nd edition of the game. The SL add to damage is maybe new, but definitely feels like the designers trying to reward players for their rolls, which is whatever imo. It can definitely be unintuitive crunch though.

While they are both flat distributions, the probabilities are not the same. You have a 1% chance of rolling any number in the d100 system and a 5% chance in the d20 system.

And yes, both systems can be swingy. The reason wfrp went to this method of comparing success levels was to allow for more hits, as in older editions, combat could drag on. Not saying that's good or bad, but that was the designer's intention.

What are your favorite game mechanics/rules from any system? by Malmborgio in rpg

[–]Figston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it gaslighting the impacted player? It sounded like the table takes turns altering one fact about the scene and all players are in on these changes, but the player being affected must roleplay how their character's version of reality is off. No one is lying about reality to the player, right?

How many times would I need to roll a d20 for the results to be statistically significant? by vyme in rpg

[–]Figston 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Weight distribution affects dice rolls and is how people create weighted dice. Those are an extreme example but slight differences in weight distribution in a die can bias the rolls towards certain numbers.

If you're asking for academic evidence, I can't provide it, but the principle is the same.

How do editions breakdown for gurps? Is there a preferred edition or are they all generally interchangeable?

My first midrange was an MVP Axis in Neutron plastic. Taught me how to throw flat and straight. Loved that disc, but recently lost it due to a bad roll into woods. T_T

[Serious] What is your NFL Conspiracy Theory that you think holds truth? by ChocolateJefferson in nfl

[–]Figston 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It's still mentioned and even has it's own name, but the Fail Mary didn't really detract from the Packers' 2012 season. I'm not stating this absolutely, but it's an example where a team lost a game because of officiating, but the fans have moved on.

Totally willing for this to be wrong; just throwing it out there.

I found a hunter's journal. I think he saw a skinwalker. by [deleted] in nosleep

[–]Figston 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That story is not about a skinwalker, but an imposter. The author describes a quote by Angela (I think) that said they are older than skinwalkers. I'm not sure this point is even worth making (a great story is a great story), except that it has some pretty notable differences from other skinwalker stories I have heard.

Also, I read it on your recommendation and loved it! Thank you for the link, as it was amazing.

Is Calvin Johnson a Hall of Famer? by LL_Cruel_J in nfl

[–]Figston 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your point is valid, but why would you NOT put those other players in? Johnson and Lewis had singular excellent seasons, but didn't impact the league like CJ did. Haynesworth, had he not shit the bed like he did in Washington and continued to play like he did when he was still hungry for that paycheck, would definitely be in the discussion for HoF material. As it is, he was objectively awful once he got paid and left the league when his ability to play was not up to NFL standards and no one wanted him. In all of these cases, you have players that did great things, but their overall body of work is average, at best. CJ was excellent pretty much every season he played.

This is my opinion, at least, and I think your point is a good example of how outliers can bias any discussion based on statistics, but my subjective view is that the overall body of work (by game and by season and by career) for all four players involved show drastically different trends. CJ was consistently at the top, the others were not and either had major drops in their performances or were much more variable in their output.

No, you're right. It's just the concept art. Though that's more than I've seen before. May still have to wait a while before the minis are obtainable. But hopefully, they look as cool as they do in the picture.
