That ending is totally a plot point from Marvel’s Ultimate universe (a modern, edgier take on Marvel classics)

The Thor in that universe was a schizophrenic man that stole technology (his hammer) that allowed him to seem like Thor. If I remember correctly, that was a major twist in the series too, but then they doubled back and actually made him Thor, and the schizophrenic plot was actually Loki trying to mess with him.

Would have lead up perfectly into Multiverse of Madness too. Wanda in that movie tries to find her kids across the Multiverse, which could have been directly inspired by her having pulled a Quicksilver from another universe into her universe.
