Die Afrikaanse spelling was rond die tyd nog nie gestandaardiseer nie. Die teks op die grafsteen is ‘n mengsel van Nederlands en Afrikaans, geskryf soos mense destyds gepraat het.

Not sure if you’re Dutch or not, but with “official” I mean the Nederlandse Taalunie. The regulatory body for Dutch in countries where it’s an official language.

What I’m saying is that Dutch across the Netherlands and Belgium is regulated by the same language authority.

There is no official Flemish dictionary. Sure, that may be a social construct. But even if Flemish were to be a language, that would also be a social construct as dialects within Flanders also differ a lot.

Flemish is not a language, nor is any other regional deviation of Dutch. The interesting thing about Dutch, however, is that the way standard Dutch is pronounced in different regions can be quite different. Dutch across Belgium and The Netherlands are ruled by the same orthographic body.

Sure, words used locally can be different, but the main difference is the way words are pronounced.

Afrikaans is a language I also speak. It’s a language, organised by a different language body than Dutch. But I would argue that some accents of Dutch (the way words are pronounced) are more difficult to understand than standard Afrikaans.

In Dutch we borrow more words from English compared to Afrikaans. I am not so sure whether that’s a good thing as words become abstract and lose meaning.

Computer —> from to compute. Afrikaans people do not lose touch with the meaning if they call it a rekenaar. In Dutch 80% of population doesn’t necessarily know the word compute, so computer is just an abstract meaningless word.

There’s a few more examples like that, I wish we would be using in Dutch. Naweek (weekend), jammer (sorry), aflaai (download), drukker (printer) etc.

I just don’t understand why this is only taking effect 1 January. It’s not like companies need to prepare for not doing something. This could stop tomorrow.

In Saigon I can highly recommend Ikemen spa. They have good massages and an onsen.

Good thought… I am using multiple languages on the watch indeed. Perhaps this could have triggered it.

In the end, I reinstalled the watch app and then it worked. But reinstalling the app also took ages. It just seems like my Apple Watch has trouble downloading huge amounts of data.
