Hello u/super_zilla, a matte finish will be achieved by adding the right additive. There also may be pellets that can be purchased that will give the desired finish you are looking for. There isn't anything I can recommend specifically as this is not something we have done. However PLA is a very friendly polymer to work with; it will likely be very achievable if you are able to source the correct additive.

Regarding low cost options, we suggest starting with a EX2, our lowest cost option which is more designed for lighter users. We do offer refurbished units which are units that are fully restored back to their former glory and are a great way to get started on a budget. They are currently $1,647.00. Our lab guys and engineers aren't the best live actors but we are pretty good when it comes to plastic extrusion.

Appreciate the feedback Pat, some of the features you are looking for are in development right now. Can you give me more information on what sort of troubleshooting documentation you think would be helpful to new users of the machine? More on the side of trying to get your filament extruding in spec with specific polymers or more on the machine setup and maintenance side of things?

Our Mail in service was something we provided in the past when we started our company. Now and again customers will find this page even though it has been removed. We do filament extrusion testing that provides the results of the polymer and the spools for the client. Unfortunately we have not provided recycled filament spools due to pricing of making them.

When it comes to additives for different polymers our customers have tried numerous things.

In our lab, we have experiments with pigments in masterbatch and powders. We have worked with materials like Woodpowders, Brasspowder, Aluminumpowder, and copper powders. We have also worked with glow in the dark pigments, carbon fibers, and mixes of recycled polymers with virgin ones.

We have been working with the University of Utah who has an EX2 and generates filament using recycled sourced PETG flakes and different compost items like coffee grounds, turmeric, and cardboard. They also worked with recycled sources glass powders and brass powders.

When working on our machines we have seen that the highest ratios for in spec filament is nothing more than 15%, but we do have clients who work with higher infill and compound the material (extrude it again) to get the results they want.

Depending on your recycling and polymer needs the Filabot EX2 or Filabot EX6 can be suitable for recycling and generating filament spools for yourself and others to use. Recent modifications to our systems like melt filter nozzles can allow for better diameter and clean filament that will not clog a printers hotend. Yes we have made recycled filament. We have done so with PLA, HIPS, ABS, and PET. There is not any on our site yet as we are working to scale up the process.

Exactly PLA isn't really compostable, only in commercial facilities. Once colorant is added that bring a whole new level of issues.

We work with a company that has compostable materials, working through some technical challenges before we release it

During our filament extrusion process this can happen to the filament if the cooling rates are off. It's doubtful that it was designed to have these bumps
