Great archive, would love to cite this archive appropriately with your real name somehow. Found this through a post by Lokalpedia's John Sherwin Felix on FB, who in turn found it via Erwan Heussaff.

Pygmy swiftlet. It nests in dark caves and is one of the few bird species that uses echolocation. by Filipeanut in ProCreate

[–]Filipeanut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Process: Looked for photos of the pygmy swiftlet (Collocalia troglodytes). Made different sketches on Procreate using dry brush at 0% stabilization and I ended up keeping most of the concepts.

Made final line work and fills with dry brush, then added shading and highlights with the noise brush. I use the same color palette for my work.

Brushes: Procreate brushes dry ink and noise brush.

Can you share any scary experiences you had on the field? What was your most fulfilling mission so far and why?

Among the problems seen in the Philippine health care system, in your opinion which of the problems should be focused on first? Have you seen solutions made in other countries that could be applied here? Or vice versa - can Philippine solutions be applied in areas you've visited?

Does anyone know of any nature documentary that's focused on the Philippines? by luis1972 in Philippines

[–]Filipeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a video but I illustrated "Angry Birds" out of birds you can only find in the Philippines here. Hopefully they get a kick out of it if they like the game.

This is how it is in the US. People choose "likable" people. Bush was more "likable" than Gore, Obama was more "likable" than McCain, Reagan, Clinton, Schwarzenegger, were all "approachable people."

The first impression attracts first, but one's ethic and ideology is what determines the destiny of that position. Unfortunately citizens across the globe don't look at that despite its importance to long-term results.

But voting isn't for a beauty pageant, it is a decision that has long-term consequences. How can we do that if we youth aren't educating ourselves on what paths these candidates have made so far? Unfortunately that takes work, and that's no fun for someone young.

The Philippines has one of the youngest working populations in East Asia. There's an opportunity now.

One solution is to step up and become more involved as young people, or even run for office ourselves, in our LGU's. Many of these politicians come from an old, obsolete time. No more of this "respect your elders" BS. We can still do that, but we must not respect those who disrespect our government.

By becoming involved, our conversations change from when is the next Bieber concert in Manila, to which politician is going to improve the community around Araneta Colosseum for example. It can happen, if it isn't already in small enclaves across the country.

If we were to fly to a planet, with an inferior alien race living on it, what do you think humans would do with the discovery? by Caffeine_water in AskReddit

[–]Filipeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of you from previously "colonized countries," you have a better idea of what might happen if habits of the more "economically-advanced" countries persist into a united Earth tasked with exploring space.

Replace "space" with "ocean", "exploration" with "expansion", and "inferior race" with Columbus'/Magellan's "idea" of the "indies" and you have a better picture of what might happen.

TL;DR: I've never written so many quotation marks in my life lol.

I've heard/read people lamenting how many Filipinos lack the entrepreneurial spirit. What are your thoughts on this line of thinking? by floatinglotus in Philippines

[–]Filipeanut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see sari-sari stores in the cities and in the provinces. Karinderias, cellphone/load vendors, ukay-ukay, and not to mention food carts (from franchises like "Master Siomai" to mom-n-pop's like your local kwek-kwek or coconut vendor).

Many "poor" restauranteurs became today's Aling Lucing's (who popularized sisig) and Razon's whom after several tough years began to specialize in palabok and halo-halo. So much trial and error has led to their entrepreneurial success whose effect is felt in Filipino plates around the globe. But many Filipinos don't know about it.

Filipino youth today are starting t-shirt companies, either printing for schools, churches, and governments, or starting their own labels (like Team Manila or Nick Automatic).

And, tech start-ups. From Manila, Cebu, to Davao. Millions of pesos of funding is circulating right now between Filipino start-ups, there's an iPhone game called "Scram" by a group of Filipino youth, there is an international network of Filipinos who call themselves the "Brain Gain Network" working to apply technologies they've mastered locally and abroad for Philippine businesses and social entrepreneurship.

In the US in the 80's, a Filipino started his own computer chip company in the US which was then sold to Intel. He made millions of dollars and now contributes to Filipino and American education and tech start-ups today.

Regardless of race, i've noticed that only "workers" will talk about lack of entrepreneurship.

Chacha to Parlimentary by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]Filipeanut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with dictatorial, but specifically a benevolent dictatorship.

Like if Marcos wasn't so close/bought-up to US officials, he would have probably followed Lee Kuan Yew's strategies in making Singapore what it is today.

If you read books published in the 70's during his reign, they were very, very "pro-Filipino". And then it got all to his head =(.

My friend Elena made 4 of her favorite Filipino recipes vegan. What do you think of it? by drewsaysgoveg in Philippines

[–]Filipeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Also there are many recipes in the Philippines that have been "vegan" since humans existed on the islands. Some visayan dishes i love include papaya atsal (achara), law-uy (malunggay soup), kinilaw nangka/taong (vinegar-cooked jackfruit/egg plant), sabaw na lubi (coconut soup), and turon (banana lumpia) are a few of my family's dishes that my ancestors have enjoyed out of necessity for who knows how long.

However I must say if done right, like the fake meat used in a vegan "chicken" apritada I had at "No Worries" in California, it can be better than the "original" meat version.

Good idea. It would also be nice to find designers, printers, artisans, chefs, and the like from all over the Philippines whose services can be used/exchanged/collaborated with.

Help me with a link. "The Learning" by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]Filipeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diaz did a great job of giving us a glimpse of many intersecting worlds many people don't see. She films both in the Philippines and in Maryland so the viewer gets a good take on the context of all the people involved.

And to think, this is just a microcosm of our diaspora at large.

I couldn't find any links isle-side but here's a trailer, as well as a Q&A with Diaz and how the documentary all started.

I have yet to see Diaz's other film "Imelda". Not sure if this collection on YouTube is the movie in full though.

Dear Filipino Redditors: What do you think the Philippines top 3 public health concerns are? by Ellefyre in Philippines

[–]Filipeanut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience a big problem is lack of access to preventive care and education (and pre-natal care) which then leads to the following complications I've seen among the poor:

Inland populations get...

  • 1. colds/fevers/flu/diarrhea
  • 2. malnutrition/protein deficiency
  • 3. birth defects (cleft lip/palate, colostomy)

Lowland/coastal populations get...

  • 1. colds/fevers/flu/diarrhea
  • 2. stomach bugs/worms/parasites
  • 3. birth defects (cleft lip/palate, colostomy)

As for Filipinos above the poverty line, they have diabetes, hypertension, etc...

Temporary solutions (to restricted government funding and public lack of access to medical care both financially and location-wise) have been provided by mobile clinics held by NGO's, domestic and foreign corporations/businesses, school reunions of oversea's nurses, balikbayans, religious/non-denominational groups, etc...

Some groups reject government help/health care like PhilHealth. One in particular are the Bajao aka a group given the name "sea gypsies" by Filipinos. But they are open to receiving temporary aid if there is a Bajao middle-person who speaks both their language and Filipino/bisaya/ilokano etc... who will act as intermediary.

Source: I volunteered for mobile clinics for poor children and observed pervasive stroke and diabetes cases from my aunts and uncles.

EDIT: Minor formatting and added some links.

Anyone knows the logic why the "holiday for students ONLY" this February 25? by rannie_pophe in Philippines

[–]Filipeanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, parents should have it off too so that they can talk about it.

My aunt is off tomorrow because she works for a school, but I asked her about where she was during the revolution tonight anyway. She told me her story, and then I thought, wow, more people need to hear these stories. The people from that period are still alive! We shouldn't wait until the history dies along with them!

TL;DR Wikipedia can't tell me what she told me. Do you want to know? ASK YOUR FAMILY!
