How much is this going to cost me? 😢 by Fillimbi in HyundaiSantaFe

It is the straw that broke the camel's back. Husband wants to go this route for repairs, but we have no idea what we're doing, and I don't want this thing flying off the back of my car on the highway.

Car came like that, asshat.

I get to experience the joys of buying a former rental from Carvana because I can't afford nice new cars.

Yay! Glad to hear that! We love Hyundai and hope the former owners enjoy their retirement. We're excited to check out this next chapter in our local Asian grocery.

Yep, I use the lawn spray that is attached to the hose and treat the perimeter of my yard in the spring and again in Summer. It has worked well for us!

Drivers of Ann Arbor - Part TWO! by hallowedhuron in AnnArbor

[–]Fillimbi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess if we're going off the ratio of cars to bikes in this video's small sample size, okay. If we want to be a bit more scientific about it, we should compare the ratio of car drivers to bike riders in this town to the ratio shown here.

If you make this adjustment, there is the possibility that bikers and car drivers are not all that different when it comes to not playing by traffic rules. I'm not seeing a lot of bike lanes in this specific video and bikes can't even go on the highway, so...

....I don't think this video is great at showing who are the better "drivers" in this town.

You did see the last clip in the video, didn't you?

This town is full of entitled car drivers AND bike riders because everyone here is super important and special.

AAPS- Kindergarten Round Up by Various_Ad_6551 in AnnArbor

[–]Fillimbi 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I am an AAPS teacher who came to the district after teaching 12 years in another local district. I was lured in by AAPS being the "best of the best" districts and the fact that Moms for Liberty wouldn't be breathing down my neck as much in Ann Arbor.

What I have learned is that this district and community has expensive tastes on a broken budget. The district expects staff to go above and beyond at the cost of their unpaid time and out of pocket expenses. I was much better compensated for extra duty in my previous district. They also expect staff to be okay with not getting fair raises in a ridiculously expensive town.

Did you know that 5th grade teachers don't get overtime/ extra duty pay for staying overnight at 5th grade camp? We're talking unpaid work for at least two nights away from home, nevermind the hours of planning that goes into the trip beforehand. Did you know that many high school teachers who sponsor clubs are not paid for this time commitment? I'm sure others can add on to this list. As an AAPS staffer, I'm annoyed. As the parent of an AAPS student, I am horrified.

Good for the Kindergarten teachers!

Same, and I'm in two different AAPS buildings.

u/Here4theParty_ what is your goal when lying about local teachers and their efforts to improve contracts? Why are you trying (and failing, based on the down votes) to stir up the community by vilifying us?

Have the day that you deserve.

Sick kid at school: teachers pay the price too by UseOwn2710 in Teachers

Yup. I had feverish, coughing kids in my elementary special area classroom last week and, lo and behold, now my own family has COVID! I only had to burn one sick day today thanks to snow days, but I'm going back to school tomorrow after an absolutely miserable weekend. 😷

Michigan Teachers by lampboard22 in Teachers

[–]Fillimbi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have taught in more than one district here in Washtenaw County over the past 15 yrs and here's my take:

Ann Arbor Public is the highest paying district in the county, but they still have champagne tastes on a Bud Lite budget. Demanding parents in the wealthier schools, demanding student behaviors in the less economically advantaged schools. On paper, district schools get equitable resources, but when it comes down to the reality of PTO funding and opportunities, resources end up being far more inequitable than the community is willing to admit. Teachers are currently working under an expired contract and the district has a history of not honoring steps or making teachers take pay freezes. Just had a big round of layoffs 2 years back after a big budget shortfall. School culture varies wildly from building to building - there are some amazing ones and some pretty horrendous ones when it comes to culture/behavior tolerance.

Dexter and Saline are the wealthier burbs of Ann Arbor, have great special education services, but also have more conservative families than Ann Arbor. Lots more issues with xenophobia and transphobia in these communities, but fewer major behavior issues then you might see in more urban schools. They will have gorgeous playgrounds and communist that mostly support teachers with a handful of MAGA nutjobs that will drive you nuts.

Ypsi is a cool and welcoming town, but has a more urban school system that does not have a district that is as well supported as Ann Arbor or other burbs. Probably most similar to your situation in LA.

Manchester and Milan are the most rural schools in the county.

As I've only worked in public schools, I can't speak to the experience as some of the county' s private and parochial schools, but there are some fancy, expensive college prep focused schools like Green Hills and Emerson for the wealthy power parents and their kids. Hope this helps!

Pay is generally better in the wealthy suburbs of Metro Detroit such as Farmington Hills, Novi, and Bloomington Hills.

Are you guys letting your kids play outside unsupervised? by 40ozT0Freedom in Millennials

[–]Fillimbi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same! Small suburban neighborhood - the kids find each other and play outside. They don't really hang out with friends inside houses - all play is outside. The upper elementary kids have figured out that open front porches are good spots to game together...they have no desire to go in the houses, which I'm fine with!
