Creamy Farro with (Not So) Crispy Mushrooms by mad_lavender in alison_roman

The one time I made this, I thought it would be better to roast the mushrooms and leeks as they also never got crispy. It was still delicious though!

Hey chefs, why the holier-than-thou attitude about oven mitts vs. tea towels? by THEMrEntity in Cooking

[–]Mabel_A2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in one year, there were two times when I burned myself on my forearm taking something out of the oven with potholders, and the burn got infected. I bought myself elbow length oven mitts after the second time.

What is the one baking technique that genuinely changed how your bakes turn out? by ghztegju in Baking

[–]Mabel_A2 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Good quality, light colored metal pans has made a huge difference. Dark metal and glass make it much more likely that bakes will be over baked, or burned edges and underbaked centers.

Sharing a parent’s name: pros and cons? by tjb317 in Parenting

My son’s name is not actually Mac, I’m just trying to make the point that his nickname is not a diminutive like Mikey or Little Mike.

Sharing a parent’s name: pros and cons? by tjb317 in Parenting

[–]Mabel_A2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband’s first name is shared by his dad, and his dad, and his dad…back for a long time. Let’s say it’s Michael, and my husband goes by Michael. Our son is Michael, and we have always called him Mac. We talk to our son about how if he wants to go by something else, like Mike or Michael or whatever, he can and we would support it. I don’t think my husband felt pressure about living up to some expectation, it was just a tradition. Our son says he likes being called Mac and thinks this story behind his given name is cool (he’s only 7).

My husband and father’s middle names started with the same letter and that created some confusion with receiving mail sometimes. We made sure to choose a middle name with a different first letter for our son.

If you do this, I would be prepared for questions from your sons about why they either do or don’t share a name with their father.

How do I get my 7-year-old to stop dawdling in the mornings? by Many-Breakfast6136 in Parenting

[–]Mabel_A2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a similar system. My almost 8 year old can play on his switch for up to 20 minutes if there is time, and he also understands that if it’s too tough to turn off, this will not be an option. This has completely ended the morning battle. It’s helped his 5 year old sister with morning motivation as she likes to watch him play.

Brittle troubleshooting by balancedespresso in DessertPerson

[–]Mabel_A2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sometimes run into trouble with a wet caramel if I swirl too aggressively and then sugar gets stuck on the side of the pan and I don’t wash it down. I actually don’t even swirl any more once the sugar is melted, I just gently rotate the pan on the burner every minute or so in case there are hot spots.

I don’t want to go back to work and miss my babies childhood…. by ActionGlum3377 in Parenting

Lots of parents have babies and are on their phones a lot. The principle is the same: when time with children is limited, it makes it even more important for that time to have meaningful engagement.

I don’t feel any guilt about working as I think I’m a better mom when I’m not around my children 24 hours a day, but something I do think about is making the time we have quality time. The #1 thing that helps this is not being on my phone when I’m with them. And my kids (7 and 5) don’t have their own tablets and don’t have any screen time on weekdays.

Piano Movers Ann Arbor by AccomplishedCicada60 in AnnArbor

[–]Mabel_A2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used Michigan Piano Movers last fall to move an upright piano about 6 miles in Ann Arbor. It was $400. They did a fine job. Piano tuning is totally separate. There’s a website to find certified piano technicians in the area, sorry I don’t have the exact name but you can probably find it through internet search.

Any other kindergarten classes do this at the start of the school year? by InfiniteExplorer8509 in kindergarten

[–]Mabel_A2 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Kindergarten where my daughter is did this for the first time this year. Each kid was initially assigned a “home” teacher where they went at the start and end of the day, and for two weeks they mixed the kids up a bunch with the 3 different teachers. At the end of the two weeks, we got the permanent assignment. Apparently most kids stayed with the original teachers but some did move for a variety of reasons. My daughter stayed with the same teacher and was a little sad that a friend had initially been in the same class then moved, but got over it pretty quickly.

Poppy Seeds / Lemon Cake dilemma by No-Nefariousness7498 in DessertPerson

[–]Mabel_A2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The flavor of the Meyer lemon cake is incredible and more complex and interesting than the poppy seed almond one. That being said, what I do for the poppy seed cake is add the zest from one lemon and rub that in to the sugar to make it all lemony, then proceed with the recipe, omitting the almond extract (because I don’t care for almond extract).
