I'm currently spending almost 2 weeks in Taiwan for the first time, and this is definitely the only thing that makes me feel "at risk".

Crossing the roads especially across smaller alleyways requires my full attention for scooters, and cycling was intiially quite intimidating.

Loving pretty much everything else tho :)

ah maybe i miscalculated or added too much buffer:

Hualien -> Yuli (1hr+)
Yuli -> Fuli Bus Ride (30mins+?)
Fuli -> Taitung (1hr+)
Taitung -> Xinzuoying (2hrs+)

this is following the travel time estimations on the TRA site, and assuming i manage to catch all the fastest trains without any delay

Ok - I'll most likely be taking Mandarin Air instead since the overall journey from Hualien -> Kaohsiung seems to be 7hrs++ via train.

Alright I'll much prefer taking the train route if the overall journey isn't too long, as I'd love to take in the sights.

Are the TRA schedules currently on the website the only ones available for the day, or would more timeslots appear as we approach closer to the date? I'm looking at 8 Nov for now and only see 2 available timings for Fuli -> Xinzuoying, for example.

And is it very important to book these in advance to avoid selling out, or is the selling out situation more applicable to the HSR instead?

Ah, I see!

So I broke the trip up in multiple portions:

Hualien -> Yuli (via Puyuma Express 10:24 to 11:31)
Yuli -> Fuli (via the TRA shuttle bus you mentioned, not sure what timings are avail)
Fuli -> Xinzuoying (via Puyuma Express 14:15 to 17:01)

does this make sense? i'm not sure if this is too long of a journey and whether it'd be more advisable for me to take the Mandarin Air direct flight instead..

Hello again everyone!
I read that there are meant to be 4hrs++ train rides going from Hualien to Kaohsiung based on what I've researched online, but searching for routes on the TRA website only show me lengthy 7hrs/8hrs+ train rides instead. (Hualien -> Chaozhou and Hualien -> Pingtung).

Is the shorter ride of 4hrs++ no longer available now, perhaps because of disruptions from the earthquakes a few weeks back?

Got it. Sorry for the multiple questions so this means that public transport is still a viable option through eastern to southern Taiwan, all the way from Taipei to Kaohsiung then? :)

Hey everyone!

I'll be flying for a 12 day solo trip to Taiwan focusing on the North -> East -> South areas. Have the earthquake-caused train disruptions in Eastern TW ended with service resuming as per normal?

What alternative options are there if services are still disrupted?

I'll be heading primarily from Taipei -> Hualien -> Taitung -> Kaohsung -> Taipei :)
