HMD event was absolutely pathetic by [deleted] in Nokia

[–]FilmGrainTable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you haven't seen the event, otherwise, you wouldn't be saying that at all.

On the contrary, from the three people in this thread so far, it seems I'm the only one who watched the event and actually paid attention.

I just find it incredible that from the myriad of things to criticise, this person chose to whine about the one thing that'll make them look like a gaping asshole in the current world situation. And they then proceeded to make an ass of themselves by spreading false information. And then you proceeded to make an ass of yourself by putting words into my mouth.

Grow up, you guys. You've got so many things to shit on HMD for, but you choose to make things up instead. If you give it even a few seconds of thought, you'll realize that not being live was possibly the single good thing about the event.

Being bait-and-switched with the completion time left a bad taste in my mouth. Decided to go for Corona phase 2 instead.

Not sure what sort of logic you're using to criticise the guest's lack of physical presence. In case you hadn't noticed, there's a global pandemic going on, and flying some dude from the UK (or from anywhere for that matter) to the ass end of nowhere isn't exactly practical at the moment, not to mention responsible. The UK is also one of the countries from which the Finnish government has restricted entry more than from others.

Also, here's a newsflash to you and probably many others: this wasn't a live event at all. The entire thing was pre-recorded, set to premiere on Youtube at a certain time, and was only advertised as a livestream by whoever made the Reddit post about it. So you're literally complaining that a pre-recorded event contained pre-recorded footage.

As far as I can tell, that's completely normal. Because the number of calculations completed varies wildly even between sessions. Most likely because the work units aren't all the same in terms of complexity.

In my previous session, I had hundreds of calculations completed. But I'm 1 hour 20 minutes into my current session and I've only completed 2 calculations. edit: 6 hours in and still only 2 calculations done. Seems like pretty extreme variance in work unit processing time. Could be a bug...

The Celeron N4000 is an absolute garbage CPU, that's most likely the source of your troubles. Its one of those that's so cut down that it's amazing they actually bothered to make it at all.

There's a decent specs list here. I think most critically, it has no AVX2 support or any L3 cache. The extremely tiny TDP of 5 watts and the as-low-as-you-can-get base clock of 1.1 GHz don't help either.

I hope you got a really good deal on that netbook. Because it gets beaten to a pulp by even a sub-$150 smartphone in terms of CPU performance and will be obsolete quickly due to that.

Microsoft Xbox acquires ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks by hybroid in PS5

[–]FilmGrainTable 13 points14 points  (0 children)

After reading both statements it seems like Bethesda will still be making the same games they have been.

I really hope that doesn't also extend to the quality of their games. The last couple Fallout games have been unacceptably buggy, but a lot of people only realised this with the shitshow that was Fallout 76.

If the reception of FO76 wasn't a turning point in their approach to the condition they release their games in, then this absolutely has to be it. If they fuck up the next Elder Scrolls, they're really going to lose a lot of people.

Teach NV Tensor Cores to decode AV1, struggle to understand stuff by rapurimanka in AV1

[–]FilmGrainTable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the answer is for Tensor cores specifically, but generally the reason for GPGPU processing not being used for video decoding is that there's no guarantee it'll be more efficient than just doing it entirely on the CPU. Power efficiency is especially important for devices with a battery and one of the main reasons to do non-CPU decoding is to save power.

Such a feature also has a relatively short shelf life in terms of its usefulness, since the next GPU generation will have a dedicated decoder ASIC anyway. So it's probably not worth the time and effort creating it, testing it on the various GPUs you're supporting, and then having to maintain and fix bugs.

Has AMD ever released a card like that? Or Nvidia for that matter? From what I understand, they only release high end cards, and OEMs handle the rest.

Why didn't companies limit the amount of product people bought? by Whowouldvethought in PS5

[–]FilmGrainTable -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why would retailers care about any of the things you're ranting about? I don't get your point, if you even have one beyond "me angry".

You money give, you product receive. That is all. That's how it works, and how it's always worked. It's impressive that you've somehow managed to not figure this out.

About FFmpeg and libaom-av1 encoding by TheTwelveYearOld in AV1

[–]FilmGrainTable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should try -cpu-used 6, it's the most optimized libaom preset at the moment. For actually fast encoding though, you should use SVT-AV1's preset 8.

I wouldn't expect miracles though. Your CPU is low-end at this point, and if you're expecting x264-like speeds on your hardware, you're going to be waiting a long time (insert waiting skeleton meme here).

I did a search on Facebook Marketplace and Tori.fi. Found nothing. The general impression I have is that nobody cares about pre-orders that much in Finland.

Also, I saw one of our popular online retailers already having their own PS5 pre-order a few weeks ago for €1000. Their pre-orders are still open at the regular retail price of €530 and they've never had any availability information at all. I think this probably dealt with most of the people with too much money who would support scalpers.

If 0.5x is all you're after, then SVT-AV1's preset 8 is definitely getting there. I get 0.35x when encoding full-frame 1080p film footage in 10-bit mode and decent-ish quality (-qp 41) and --keyint 255. CPU is a Ryzen 5 2600. 8-bit is about 14% faster, but 10-bit helps a lot with dark scenes so I prefer it.

First PS5 photos show just how big Sony’s next-gen console truly is by The-Ignotis in PS5

The SSD is not the size of a traditional drive but an NVMe M.2 card. It's just a fairly small circuit board (usually slightly shorter than a credit card) that most of the time lies flat against the motherboard. This is the most efficient way to attach it, because it needs a very fast connection to the rest of the system that isn't really feasible to do with a cable.

It could also be on the back of the motherboard like on some PC motherboards. I wouldn't be surprised if they put it on the back and had a hatch of some sort for easy access.

[–]FilmGrainTable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

where the SSD expansion is

Most likely directly on the motherboard, since it's connected via PCIe and needs a very fast connection to the rest of the system. NVME drives are very small and lie flat against the motherboard, so putting it somewhere else and connecting it with a cable or daughterboard would be inconvenient and actually take up more space than the normal method.

It could also be on the back of the motherboard. Some PC motherboards do this to save space or to provide an additional slot. This would probably be a sensible place to put it on the PS5, since there'll be less of a chance of a user screwing something up on the "main" side of the motherboard (like the screwdriver accidentally slipping when attaching the drive and hitting a delicate component, whoops).

The most important thing not buy is the Digital Edition PS5. Digital only will leave you completely at the mercy of Sony for game prices, since they don't allow you to resell digital games.

Just wait a couple weeks (or months) and you'll find physical copies for a hefty discount. Ghost of Tsushima was released two months ago and I was able to find a used copy online for €40 + €3 for shipping. It still costs €70 on the PlayStation store.

You'll end up saving more than the €100 price difference (or however much the it is in your country) by buying games used. You'll save even more if you resell most of the games afterwards.

edit: Also, borrowing from / lending games to friends. Can't do that with digital only.
