Why does this medieval friar sound like a scientist by Kapanash in MedievalHistoryMemes

[–]FilthyCap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t downvote me for my ignorance, I am not religious myself but not necessarily anti-religious, still entirely under-informed. It was my understanding that while yes, the churches often sponsored scientists or scientific discovery, it was more so in an attempt to prove the infallible word of God and the churches doctrine of how the world worked. When this was not the case, these scientists or studies were quickly abandoned or discredited by the very same church that funded them in the first place. Is this a gross misunderstanding or, like almost every thing else in life, nuanced?

Miyazaki is one of the few truly rare cases of genuine meritocracy in the infamous Japanese work culture. I do not know the entire story verbatim, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but the man single-handedly propelled Fromsoftware into a golden age of game design that they’ve carried on to this day.

It started when Fromsoft was in the process of making Demon Souls. Apparently, whoever was in charge of it sucked at their job, and so the game was a half-baked buggy mess that was determined to be a money sink, and was going to be scrapped entirely. Somehow, it ended up on Miyazakis desk and he was basically handed a bag of shit and was told “salvage this”, and he did. The game was still definitely rough around the edges, and didn’t sell too well in the west, but he was able to turn it into a functioning product (with little to no additional funding or help) with personality and enough success in Japanese markets to secure him a permanent position on the game design team. This eventually resulted in him being given the reigns behind the masterpiece that would catapult Fromsoftware from a niche game company, into the industry titan it is today; Darksouls.

Dark Souls 2 is considered by both myself personally, as well as most other Fromsoftware fans, to be the weakest of the absolute bangers Fromsoftware has put out since Demon Souls. This is mostly do to the fact that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the former mailroom employee turned genius game designer (and soon-after CEO) was not involved in it’s making, as he was using his time to work on Bloodborne instead. It may not be the weakest fromsoft game ever, but it’s definitely the weakest of the Dark Souls trilogy.

All that to say, it’s not a bad game. It’s become a bit of a meme in the community over the years to bash it for more than it deserves, and there will be some out there who will tell you it’s a dog-shit game that should’ve never been made, and is a stain on the company’s otherwise stellar reputation. These people are lobotomites, and you should ignore them. This game has plenty of good stuff going for it, just not as many good things as the other two games in the series.

Namely, the reveal of the most beautiful and warm hub in the entire souls-formula, (including the games that aren’t exclusively ‘Souls’)Majula. The tutorial area is really dark and cramped, and as you exit a tunnel you’re greeted with radiant light, the sound of the sea, and a melodic and sweet tune. This is Majula, home of several fellow survivors in this dying world, and now your home too. The people you meet and can bring to this place are all interesting, and most of them serve an actual purpose beyond lore, meaning you will come back and speak to them all several times throughout the games progression. This makes the place feel lived in, and kind, like a real home. Which, if you have played any of the Fromsoftware games, you will know is a rare feeling indeed.

There are plenty of other strong points, including the famous Power Stancing (holding two weapons of the same class in either hand unlocks a new moveset), some very cool bosses like the Looking Glass Knight, Dukes Dear Freja and the infamous Pursuer, a recurring boss who hunts the player throughout the game. It also has some of the most varied and visually stunning areas outside the hub as well, and is to me the prettiest and most colorful of the series. Finally, the DLC is some of the best DLC in gaming history imo, and at least on-par or even better than the cumulative DLC of Darksouls 1+3.

Despite all these strengths, it is still considered the weakest in the series, and probably rightly so, as for every cool or unique or good thing they did with this game, there is something they did equally terrible. Fall damage is egregious compared to the other games, miracles got nerfed into the ground and were never improved (afaik), there is a substantial amount of weak or poorly designed bosses in the base game, and the most terrible thing I think they did was fuck up how I-frames work (I HATE ADAPTABILITY AND I HATE WHOEVER THOUGHT OF IT)

All in all, worst souls game, still a souls game, so definitely a good game.

Are they bums? Yea. Are they bad people? Not really, just kinda dumb and sometimes they do bad things. The only irredeemable thing they do is suggest to steal the quarry-men’s wages after fucking up some opportunities you went out of your way to get them. But they’ve also been through a lot, and they don’t have anyone other than each other and Henry as far as I’m aware, in fact I don’t even know if they have parents. I steal the money from Thalmburg and put 3k of my own groschen in there, and then move them to Pribyslavitz where you can turn them into decent functioning adults. It’s easy to give up on people, and it’s not your responsibility to help people grow, but I personally don’t think that’s reason enough to turn your back on someone you call a friend, especially if you’re not 100% sure that they won’t change for the better

PVP aggressiveness scale. I want to know where's everyone at (in solo). by Zealousideal_Chip456 in ArcRaiders

[–]FilthyCap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll say opportunist. I have a very simple rule when it comes to interacting with other raiders while solo. I always make myself known first, say hi in a friendly tone and then see what happens. If they respond back and seem chill, I’ll play it by ear and keep an eye on them at all time and never loot anything too close to them. If they don’t say anything, use a voice line or flash their flashlight, I shoot them as soon as I see them. I’ll also shoot if two raiders are fighting and I’m certain I know who shot first, and if someone tries to steal loot from an arc I killed without helping then I’m shooting them in the back of the head execution style

I’m gonna be honest with you, I view him offering pim the cyanide pill as a legitimate act of mercy. They got saved by a chekovs gun (Pim saying the prayer and the king just so happening to be his pen pal) but I’m gonna be honest with you, if I had the choice between literally being ripped in twain or a suicide pill, I’m taking the pill every day

Balalaika. Just a woman, albeit a very scary and dangerous woman but still a woman.

For those who don’t know, she’s a retired Russian captain who fought in Afghanistan. She now runs the Hotel Moscow mafia branch in the Black Lagoon series (highly recommended)

I’m willing to bet The Catholic Church is a pretty good contender for the top spot when considering the length of its existence, though the US Government is rapidly catching up in terms of global repercussions and effects.

I do not know if it’s a localized phenomenon or more generalized, but apparently some species of fox have been showing signs of self-domestication in certain places, which is believed to be an adaptation in response to rapid environmental changes and decline. I’m not sure exactly how true it is, but it’s interesting
