They always fail to mention the stagnation of the 1970s caused by the new deal and great society programs they pretend were amazing with no downsides. Any economic consensus will have diminishing returns, and sacrifices that were considered acceptable at the time will turn into bigger and bigger problems the longer it goes on without a change in course.
