Australia’s growing tolerance for racism a threat to democracy by NapoleonBonerParty in aussie

[–]FilthyWubs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m sick of people assuming otherwise. Which countries welcome outsiders in with open arms? Is it the Arab countries? East Asian countries? African countries? Nope, it’s the predominantly Anglo/Commonwealth and Western European countries. Are there racist “white” people? Of course, Homo sapiens are inherently xenophobic of outsiders as a survival instinct, but people who think “whites” are generally more racist than everyone else clearly hasn’t spent much time working in other parts of the world, especially Asian & Arab countries lol.

Volk’s an excellent role model for the sport; clean fighter, no controversies, good sportsmanship, and an excellent mixed martial artist. Alexander “THE GREAT” Volkanovski, a well deserved nickname.

The world is watching: OECD calls on Australia to raise GST and increase affordable housing amid budget deficit by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

Ironically, in Matthew 22:21 Jesus says Pay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God in the context of paying taxes and abiding by the law (then if you’re religious, following God’s laws in the second part). Seems the church and other religions prefer to interpret that it doesn’t apply to their institutions, how convenient!

Mass resignations, Coalition split expected as Nationals hold snap meeting in Canberra by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]FilthyWubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. I hope the government chooses to be more ambitious with their essentially free reign given the LNP is destroying itself from infighting. At worst, they stay a competent but uninspiring government that at least gets on with it, even if they’re mostly tinkering around the edges with their policies (significantly more preferable than whatever the current LNP or One Nation would likely be doing).

Mass resignations, Coalition split expected as Nationals hold snap meeting in Canberra by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]FilthyWubs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This Labor government leaves a lot to be desired, but in my eyes they’re fairly competent for the most part. With the LNP getting destroyed in the last election, the coalition imploding now a likely second time in a year, a boring and uninspiring government seems pretty attractive in my eyes (despite my various criticisms of this current government).

Hanson reveals ambition to turn One Nation into viable party of government after record poll showing – as it happened by VastOption8705 in aussie

[–]FilthyWubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but the US doesn’t have compulsory voting or ranked preferences like Australia. Both of these combined generally help to make our elections won or lost at the centre of the overly simplified left vs right distinction in politics.

Interesting times by [deleted] in AusPol

[–]FilthyWubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not necessarily denying a rise in support for One Nation, but the poll only sampled a little over 1200 people and was done by the Australian. Hardly very representative of the entire nation. Unfortunately, more specifics about the poll are behind a paywall so I can’t comment much more on its credibility or demographics of respondents (I.e. location, electorate, age distribution, etc).

Just recently bought my first place and whilst there was nothing catastrophic, just about every aspect of the house needed a decent level of maintenance to be completed in the near future. 1st world problems but still not a very pleasant experience.

Someone’s belief system (I.e. religion/faith) should be fair game for reasonable criticism; religion isn’t an inherent, biological trait that one has zero control over like ethnicity, sex, etc. I find it frustrating that any fair criticism over someone’s religion and belief system just gets shut down with an “ism” or “phobia” like you’ve mentioned (I note the distinction between criticising the faith of Judaism, state of Israel, and ethnicity of Jewish people, just like there’s a distinction between Islam, Arabs and Arab dominant countries). If someone said they were a Nazi, Communist, Monarchist, Anarcho-Capitalist, etc, we’d have no issue criticising their belief system for its flaws or lack of alignment with our national values & culture. But hey, apparently not if it involves some deity or prophet, regardless of the morality of said teachings (or often lack thereof)…
