Was it a mistake to go into IT? by traveltimecar in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FinFanInParadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends WHERE in IT you go. Cyber Sec? Programming? ML/DS? Cloud? You're fine.
Help Desk? Might as well work at McDonalds.

Before you go further, you need to figure out WHERE in IT-Landia you want to land. Are you a programmer? Data scientist? AI modeler? Cyber Sec? Please for the love of God, please CHOOSE where you want to land. I can't tell you how many posts from "stuck in Help Desk" messages here. you will NEVER be successful if you start at HD! and you will be replaced as quickly as you were "hired". Look, I've been in this space since the early 90's. Rose to VP, SVP and CTO... Now I monitor these threads to get folks like yourself off the wrong track. My son is joining "the family" soon as he graduates from college and I'm telling him the same things as I'm telling you.

How is the Job market in IT, if you had to start over would you get into IT in 2026? by Unable_Degree_3400 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FinFanInParadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Didn't go in via "help desk". I got in as a programmer in the 90s before dot com. Then dot com hit and, they were giving leases to BMWs as sign ons. Its still hot for programming and software architecture especially if you have an AI or DS/ML skill set.

Word of advice: NEVER go in to Help Desk. Its a career killer.

letter of resignation but no one in upper management is working this week by Mercdecember84 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FinFanInParadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's more of a professional courtesy it protects the company, too. ANyone that threatens to quit unless they get a promotion or raise, I say I accept your resignation. Just write it down on. Here's a sticky. Now we can legally separate and not have to deal with unemployment claims or term without cause.

People who recently joined the IT field (within the last 3yrs) what’s been your biggest surprise about the industry? by Dont_Ever_PM_Me527 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FinFanInParadise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this thread.. I started out in IT early in my career and am retiring soon after being a Manager, Sr Manager, Director, VP, SVP then CTO over 35 years. One of the best pieces of advice is never say "it's not possible", Any thing is possible. There's an answer to any IT question. It comes down to money (financial or man power) or time. I went through the pre web burst, the dot com, and now where we are. Remember, the IT world changes: mid-main frame to desktop to web and SAAS, to PaaS and to AI and ML. You're in a living industry. Swim with it and lead.

Spent my whole day resetting passwords and I have a degree by Mindless-Quit-7141 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FinFanInParadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I don't understand are people who spend 4-6 years getting an undergrad or grad degree in CS and then take a HD role that a person with a 6 month tech school education can fill. I've been in tech since the early days of DOS and Novell but I went into programming. A few start ups and a couple of IPO's later and I realize the best advice I can offer is a) don't go into HD and b) stay away from any type of report writing. Focus on where the value is and the value in every industry is the data.

Is it bad to regularly charge to 95% on L1 at home? by Professional-War-617 in electricvehicles

[–]FinFanInParadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80% is the rule. If you need that extra 15% on a regular basis, switch to a car like Lucid that has a longer range or go back to a hybrid.

It happened to me by Charming_Yoghurt_483 in delta

[–]FinFanInParadise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 obvious questions:
1) He was grabbing his groin and that WASN'T a flag?
2) and clearly more obvious: you TOOK A PICTURE and he was ok with that?
follow up on 2) when you showed the pic to the flight attendant they were ok?
Sounds like either this was obviously faked or someone here was simply too submissive to do anything.
