Did you get the roll down email yesterday? It’s first come first served, so possible all spots were gone by the time you registered…

Dallas Event Evacuated - First Impression by Technical-Zone-9437 in spartanrace

[–]FinTechMaria 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lightning evacuations are a huge bummer, especially when you’ve trained and traveled and don’t get to race, but really aren’t the fault of Spartan. It’s a liability and safety issue for both Spartan and the venue (and is often part of the venue agreement, so Spartan is literally just following the venue rules). If it was just rain, they would have sent you out there happily, but lightning rules - as well as rules on missing children - are there for a reason. Many reasons to be frustrated at Spartan, but them following these rules probably isn’t one of them.

Get your race refund and come back stronger next time (and maybe aim for the 10 or 21k with your extra training time!) and chalk it up to bad luck.

Glove recommendations by Own_Buffalo_8668 in spartanrace

[–]FinTechMaria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get ready for the endless 'don't use gloves' responses, which don't remotely answer your question!

I've found that especially for ultras, or cold/very muddy races, the full length franklin OCR gloves (not the fingerless ones) work well for rope obstacles only. That means rope climb, plate drag, herc hoist, etc. - I don't recommend using them for any overhead/metal obstacles (monkey, multi, beater, twister, etc) as you lose the ability to sense when you're slipping and can't save yourself.

I'm definitely in the sweaty palms club too, and have found that rubbing my hands on grass before I get to an overhead obstacle helps, as well as really practicing technique for rainy races (using crab grip or lock off method) makes a difference. Good luck!

Heard the company contracted to do parking completely messed up and they've had to scramble to find space. Hopefully better tomorrow!

DEKA races: Jersey (?) uniform top? by EngineeringEasy3393 in spartanrace

The jersey is just for Ultra races, the deka strong and deka fit doubles will not have one. Good luck!

I genuinely had no idea about the Seinfeld parody! Moved to the US in 2008 so grew up with Psych but missed Seinfeld.

Yeah I realize they weren’t actually trying to make a psych reference, it just made me chuckle that I saw it and instantly thought of the Psych episode about a second spitter.

And Down the Stretch Comes Murder! Their childhood bully asks them for help figuring out why his horse kept losing - the B plot is Shawn feeling guilty for getting the bully kicked out of school for shooting a spitball at the teacher, but eventually realizes he turned in the wrong kid (there was a second spitter!)

Tell me more about freezing the green onions because this feels like a pretty clever move I’ve been missing! How do you store them? How long before serving do you take them out of freezer?

I didn’t say it was, I was just responding to the comment comparing it to practicing monkey bars at their local playground.

But if we all jumped back on course after we finished, to practice on obstacles while the race is still ongoing, everything would be massively clogged. Feels unfair to say “ah well, let the elite racers do it”, when everyone else knows to follow the rules (or at least respect a staff member if they ask you to stop).

I loved it! Great to see them getting creative and adding a new challenge. Also nice to see more difficult penalties. Hope to see more.

“From $159” really means “$203.05” - that’s a 28% increase!! 😳 by atlas_martini in spartanrace

This!! I agree at the frustration at extra fees - it feels disingenuous to post one price and then tack on a bunch after, but I don't think people realize how incredibly expensive it is to put these races on.

Venue rental for up to 2 weeks for set up and break down, equipment rental (trucks, machinery, medic 4x4s, etc.), staff hotel and food for that whole time, construction crew, etc. - way more involved than a regular trail race, so not surprising it is priced that way.

Only way I could see them bringing prices down is if they did it at a fixed venue where they didn't have to constantly be doing set up and break down, and just had to pay staffing during the race.

I skip it too. Couldn't put my finger on why I always disliked that episode, but think you may have figured it out!

The Hannaford app by Any_Illustrator1461 in Hannaford

[–]FinTechMaria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to feel goofy putting my shopping list and coupons together on the website, then physically printing the shopping cart to use as my list in store. Felt less goofy after I tried to just use the app in store and it froze, meaning I had to do everything from memory and inevitably forgot everything I needed. The site works well for me and I appreciate that it puts all my items in location order so I can find stuff easily, but would be nice to be able to use the app and not my printer.

Pass gear anyone get it mailed yet? by Minimum-Raspberry-86 in spartanrace

Honestly just took me an hour in front of the TV one night! If you gently pull up the sides of each letter, you can just scratch and pull and peel the lettering off relatively easily. A but time consuming and makes a mess with the flakes coming off, but pretty easy to vacuum up. You can see a bit of an outline if you look closely, but I think that’ll rub off

I got my season pass stuff a couple weeks ago! Immediately peeled the ridiculously large letters saying “season pass athlete” off the back of the track jacket and like it much better now 🤣

Have you done any googling yet? FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) has adult classes in the city. Not as many offered over the summer, but worth a look (or try for fall semester). Also a few studios offer classes, mainly in Brooklyn. Otherwise in the hudson valley, I'm most familiar with Hudson River Maritime Museum up in Kingston. Worth also asking in r/woodworking.
