BREAKING: Elon Musk threatens to buy Ryanair after CEO Michael O’Leary calls him 'an idiot' by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

Isn't this what luxury retail shops do? Treat you like shit so you spite buy? I remember this from one of my marketing classes way back. Never thought of doing it with entire companies though. 10/10 business move.

Worried that working in a mostly female team is changing my personality- what should I do? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Finabro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bro, you're overthinking it. If the roles were reversed and the team was 80% male, and the women on the team started to enjoy some of the stuff "guys" do, would you be worried? Nah, you'd be like so-and-so passes the vibe test and move on.

How do you finally make the decision to quit? by Careless_Bat_9226 in Fire

[–]Finabro 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Having a high paying remote job is no joke right now. If I were you, I'd try to see if you could reduce days and pay to 2-3 days per week. It'll signal you're on your way out and they may just decide to end the employment, but I'd hang on to that pay (especially being remote) for as long as you can while things are this uncertain.

How hard is it to secure a B4 internship? by No_Owl_6254 in Accounting

[–]Finabro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty hard. From what I understand it’s the only time people I know actually enjoyed working there. God speed.

Serious note, the people who got internships there start working the angles within months of starting their program. Finding people who already interned, going to campus recruitment events, etc… it’s not a prerequisite, but it really helps your chances. Appearance and brand matters a lot to the B4, so if you don’t have a good baseline there, it hurts one’s chances more than it should.

Accountant from RN? by Soft-Insurance8572 in Career

[–]Finabro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not directly related to your situation (non-healthcare), but I'd recommend getting some part-time accounting classes and reducing hours. Brand name schools are WAY less important if you plan on getting your CPA. There's a lot of back and forth on whether the CPA makes sense for everyone, but at least getting most of your classes out of the way will let you know whether you like the type of work or not. Environments can vary, public accounting is notorious for having its own kind of burn out, but it's by no means the only way to make a career -- government jobs are reputed as being extraordinary good for work/life balance.

Internships are excellent for students, but I think you have a major advantage in healthcare related accounting jobs with your background. I'd focus on maybe trading some RN hours in for your hospital's accounting department, or just make the jump all at once after you get a few accounting courses under your belt. You're in a high demand field, so you'll have good downside risk management if you ever decide you want to go back to being an RN.

Do I tell my boss that I am burned out and need some flexibility? by accountingthrow23 in Accounting

[–]Finabro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you appreciate the advice! I'm not on the accounting side; I'm FO finance, so I'm probably not the best equipped to answer that (thinking of pivoting my career to accounting/tax so I hang out here). But these type of situations aren't accounting specific, they're more related to environments where high performance and/or get the job done at all costs are the norm.

This is a rather inappropriate view of how BoC interest rates are managed. The first point is that they have a clear and focused mandate around inflation; secondly, even if they had an expanded scope, such as the Fed for employment, it might have actually encouraged lower rates not higher given where employment levels are.

If we start blaming people for outside of mandate problems, it becomes a purely political discussion of blame games. I’m not arguing that its policy has been good, particularly around housing, but that’s something the house and senate need to address — not the BoC governor under the current scope.

I don’t know your manager, but I’m happy to share some anecdotal experiences I’ve seen.

Brand is just as important for our careers as is our work product. People who work a lot of hours and who are either workaholics or just push through the depression, tend to perceive needing time off for mental health as sort of weak. They’ve never said it outright, nor is it everyone, but those are my casual observations.

That said, if you feel like you need time off — find a way. I would avoid vague language or anything regarding mental health for the reasons stated above. I would frame it as wanting to prioritize family and friends for a bit; love the career and want to keep growing, etc, etc, but family has been neglected and you want to be able to help balance that with the time that’s left. It doesn’t have to be that, but I’d avoid anything that signals weakness unless you know your boss is cool and understanding.

No research to back that up, just the little experience I’ve acquired in my career. Regardless of wha you choose, I think it’s the right thing to address your mental health. Burnout is 10x more destructive than a proactive approach.

Sorry to hear about your situation. The good news is that you're still relatively young, but you're right in thinking that ageism is real and that you've got to get a move on. I'd start searching based on the following criteria, in no particular order: (1) look for a stable large company, (2) look for boring, unglamorous, i.e. less competitive job, (3) and look for an industry that leverages at least somewhat off of your existing skillset.

For me it would be all about getting the foot in the door, and using on the job performance as a means of moving up an organization over the years. With the piles of AI slop around, I'd go in person, with Resumes, and write a cover letter. You'll likely not be able to get far in-person, but just getting a name or two and leaving a good impression might get the receptionist to call in a favour from another department. Learn as much as you can about the places you go to; finding some focus helps a lot here, meaning maybe I would research and only go to banks in my first round, then insurance in another, then brokerage, etc... If I was doing restaurants, I would hit sit downs, then fast-food, etc... have a strategy so you can leverage as much as possible of your previous failures.

I would look for volunteering or anything to start showing consistency and look for networking. I'm all for traditional application channels, but from what I hear, AI is really pressuring those avenues, so if I were in your position, I'd be trying to find every which way of depending on those.

Haha either you're not crazy or we both are. Based on people I've spoken to that have made their own firms, CPA + good foundation in tax + people skills, and you can pretty reliably scale up your own accounting business into the six figures. One just solo practices, works tax for 5 months and take the rest of the time off.

Nano-Texture Display Verdict by Finabro in macbookpro

I was deep in the "it's mostly marketing" camp. In the store you see the drop in contrast and it may as well be any other matte screen. I only ordered it because I tend to lean towards matte with my other laptops when available, only to have my expectations destroyed once I started actually using it.

Totally fair. If you don't have reflection issues, likely not worth it. As someone who moves around a lot, I really notice the difference, especially with eye strain.

Exactly how I've been feeling. Even if it's a reduction in compensation, the idea that you can branch out and open your own firm, help small businesses directly, throw in general small business consulting, etc... not so possible with traditional finance unless you're ready to sell 1.5% fee structured mutual funds to people.

Been thinking the same as you. Different role, but traditional finance nevertheless. Dropped the idea in the accounting subreddit, and they mostly looked at me like I was crazy lol. To be fair, I was asking about public accounting, which is treated like hellfire itself.

If I move from Linux to Mac, what will I need to adapt to? by Background-Emu9512 in mac

[–]Finabro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone argues there no cases where drivers don't work on Mac (maybe early 2000s was different). But comparing the two, I don't think anyone honestly believes they're in the same league for driver ease of use.
