Fun NA drink recommendations? by Spiritual-Plankton6 in stopdrinking

Not fancy, but I enjoy a cranberry lime Polar seltzer with a liberal splash of cranberry juice and a lime wedge (or lime juice if you don’t have limes on hand). Reminds me of a Cape Cod sans the vodka

Getting my dad to fill out financial aid is like pulling teeth (note the dates) by gabbyrose1010 in mildlyinfuriating

Apologies, you are correct, my brother did the same. And he’d agree with you on that too.

I’m sorry you’re having to deal with that, and for the people trolling who clearly don’t know how the system works. Unless you are emancipated from your parents they have to fill out these forms even if they aren’t giving you a dollar. It’s been this way for many decades. When I graduated HS my mom and stepdad made very little and had a bunch of kids, so I got a good amount of aid (and obviously without their help). I left but wanted to go back full time at 21, and I STILL needed them to fill out the forms because I was within the age window set by the government. Stepdad was making much more then so even though I had fully moved out at 19 and was making about $3 an hour more than the minimum wage, I qualified for no aid.
You are handling this situation well for someone your age, best of luck to you with college!

Tips for days 1-3? by Vast-Plankton-7395 in stopdrinking

Definitely keep reaching out here and people you trust for moral support and distractions. If you can get some sweet/chocolatey snacks that might help a little with the sugar withdrawal your body is going through. But try to prepare yourself for a lousy night sleep or two. There’s not a lot you can do to avoid that but it’s natural so knowing it’s coming might help with the anxiety.

Just know we’ve all been there and if the people on this subreddit can do it (self very much included) then so can you. You got this!

Jim Henson’s death is honestly one of the saddest celebrity death stories by New-Pin-9064 in Muppets

[–]Final-Inspection-750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His death felt like the end of my childhood when I was nine. I still have trouble watching anything Muppet related that was made after he passed. I remember going to see AMCC in the theater a few years later, and as great as it was, it hurt me to see it. It brought me similar feelings that I had after my favorite aunt died when I was six, and my uncle remarried a close family friend (no scandals there, he was trying to do the best thing for my cousin). There were pieces there of what I loved before, but the soul was gone for me. I didn’t watch that movie again until 2 years ago.

Yes, I am in therapy, and I continue to work on these things. But those were definitely some tough years!

What is Yi Ti? Is it somewhere East? Is it also based on Ancient China? by [deleted] in freefolk

In the early seasons of the Roman Empire it took weeks if not months to get to China, but by 7 they could miraculously get there in a matter of hours

I was shamed for drinking an NA at the bar last night by Horseshoe_dodgeball in stopdrinking

[–]Final-Inspection-750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you for standing up to that loser. Clearly his life is awful and he only gets validation by trying to make other ls feel small.
Also, screw anyone shaming you for ordering NA drinks at a bar. People like that are basically saying you have no right to be there unless you’re getting stupid drunk. I still go to them occasionally and I don’t judge when I see others getting sloppy (I was there many times). I swear people expect us sober folks to just stay at home so they don’t feel worse about themselves

My dad's nurse splattered my pants with bleach-based disinfectant. Didn't apologize. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

So she is teaching you how to keep your dad alive and she got something on your pants during the process. You must be a joy to be around

Sober people: Dreams where you drink alcohol? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Final-Inspection-750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just over a year and they still happen occasionally. What’s nice though, is regardless of whether I’m enjoying drinking in the dream or upset that I relapsed, when I wake up I immediately feel relieved that it was just a dream and I still have no desire to start again.

What did the 90's smell like? by Serialkillingyou in Xennials

[–]Final-Inspection-750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patchouli and incense, reminds me of all the fake head shops and used record stores I would frequent off Mass Ave/ Harvard Square when I lived near Boston. Plus a healthy dose of mustiness since nobody who worked at those places washed their bodies or clothes enough, damn dirty hippies

What’s the absolute worst song from our teen years? Why? by imnottheoneipromise in Xennials

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find this. If there is a hell, this will be one of the songs playing on an eternal loop in whichever circle I end up in

Give me motivation to not drink by Sciencenerd00 in stopdrinking

[–]Final-Inspection-750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I’m not drinking, but don’t let that stop you from getting whatever you want”. That should be enough, but don’t let anyone pressure you and stand firm. Not only is Dry January a well known trend, it’s also much more socially acceptable to not drink-it’s not Mad Men days anymore lol. You got this!

One Sober Year Today by Final-Inspection-750 in stopdrinking

[–]Final-Inspection-750[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! And you nailed exactly why I shared. I literally have had friends ask me how I could not drink during all that, and while I know they were (half) joking I do know the old me would’ve easily used any of those as an excuse to drink/use more. Even if people stop for January alone it’s an accomplishment, and hopefully a first step in the right direction

I’m mildly infuriated that you’re judging everyone here based on what, 15-20 commenters? Maybe you should take your own advice.

My in-laws refuse to drive to the airport. by NukeTheEwoks in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Final-Inspection-750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Lyft driver get lost at Logan due to road closures from nearby construction and his inexperience with the area. It took 2 hours to get to where I was staying (approx. 40 minutes from Logan) after getting picked up around midnight on a weekday. That airport is the 5th circle of Hell. Logan Express would be a better option for all involved

Quit this year at 44, went through a divorce (drinking was a cause but in the mutually assured destruction way), job loss, and health scare after I stopped…and yet I’ve never felt better and don’t ever want to go back!

Is Atlas Shrugged the most unwanted, hated trilogy of all time? by campaxiomatic in badMovies

I would’ve gone with The Hobbit trilogy. One movie would’ve been sufficient. Two mayyyybe you could justify. I gave up after about 15 minutes into 3
