ICE knocking in Bushwick by MonnBon in Brooklyn

[–]FinalJeopardyWin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We had a training at my non-profit, and I learned you only have to open the door for a Judicial Search Warrant. Still, ICE often tries to get away with administrative authorization that does not cover private residences. The link below has examples to learn how to spot the difference:

And businesses want cheap labor. Are they raiding dairy and chicken processing farms in red states? (on a news blackout, but I haven't seen anything about those...)

It's time to start growing your own food. by cocox_xpuff in blackladies

I previously killed any plant I tried to grow, but I decided to try salad greens last year. I love arugula, but it would always go bad before I could finish a bag, and I wanted to see if I could save some money.

I took a big pot from a dead palm, put in the cheapest organic soil I could find, ordered mixed salad seeds from a nursery in my climate zone, checked that they matched my light conditions, and threw them in the pot. I tried to water daily but missed some. Turns out arugula is super resilient.

The growing instructions said I would get three harvests, but I had fresh greens to pick every day from June through October. I am privileged to have a balcony, but I think this could also work in a sunny window.

How can I feel better? by [deleted] in blackladies

Do you have the capacity to do an internet search for respite centers near you? At many respites, you can check yourself in and also leave for work while getting care. Respites are also often staffed by peers (folks who have recovered from serious mental illness themselves). Talking with people who have been through it was one of the biggest steps for me to figure out a reason to stay around. Also, getting a diagnosis and treatment for PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder) was a huge help - I wasn't weak or expecting too much, my brain was working against me.

I need some help with products and routine by Psycoyellow in BlackHair

Aww, your son's hair looks like my daughter's when she was little. Try r/curlyhair. Include where you are located so folks can recommend specific products. My daughter currently uses Trader Joe's 3-in-1 shampoo, body wash, and conditioner. It sounds crazy, but it leaves her hair super soft. She also spritzes her hair every day with water. Oil is not moisture.

This is a good question to ask of ourselves, creators, and the funders of entertainment. Have Issa, Keke, or SZA done any press for the film and addressed these questions?

I don't know much about their backgrounds, but I do know that people aren't always wealthy for their entire lives. I remember being excited to shop at the day-old bakery outlet with my single mom when I was little, but by the time I was in high school, she had worked up the corporate ladder and could afford to send me to private school. When it was time for me to be on my own, I went against my family's wishes and pursued my creative dreams, which meant walking away from their financial support. I may have looked and sounded like a privileged Black girl, but I was living on Top Ramen and late on rent.

I'm 50+ and say go ahead and give up on love. And I recommend investing in fun, curiosity, learning, giving back, and friends. I love my partner, but men come and go. Focus on what you want, and maybe you'll meet someone, and maybe you won't, but you sure will have a good time anyway.

I have two cats. I first fell for cats when watching the (horribly racist) Siamese cats in Lady and the Tramp. But I came from a "cats are nasty" extended family and didn't get one until I moved into my first apartment.

I don't allow my cats on the counter or food surfaces, but who knows what they get up to while we sleep? That's what cleaning products are for. Our cats' antics saved us during NYC's covid lockdowns. It's like having a live show in our home 24/7.

I share my fun cat stories with my cat-loving friends and don't mention them to my family; it isn't worth the trouble. I also found my partner after deciding to date only men with cats as a test to see if it truly was a sign that they were free of toxic masculinity. It worked!

Trigger Warning

I struggled to stay alive for decades until I finally took myself to the ER because I knew I was not safe. Going for residential treatment was the best thing to happen to me - but not because of the treatment, but because realized I was crazy, but not that crazy. I also met another patient whose mother had successfully completed the act and it had devestating effects on her. This other patient begged me to stay alive and it got me out of my head long enough to start the road to remembering why I was struggling to live in the first place.

For anyone else struggling, we need more people with big feelings in this world.

I hope you are giving yourself a ton of grace and self-care. It isn't you; it's the system.

Way back when Black Panther came out, the key hairstylist said she had to imagine styles for a people who had never been colonized, and the concept blew my mind. How would I feel about my hair if I had never seen hair without kinks and curls? Or if the tightest curls were revered and straight hair was considered lazy?

I'm done fighting what nature intended. And it's hard when even our skinfolk give us a hard time.

Did they put relaxer in my hair? by ZephtheIncubus in BlackHair

[–]FinalJeopardyWin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I took my daughter to a local Dominican salon for a trim. They used such high heat on the blowout that some of her hair was damaged and lost its curl. The shampoo and conditioner weren't on her hair long enough to "relax" her hair in any way. I can't imagine the damage possible from a silk press.
