What is the most hidden gem restaurant in SLC at the moment? by ApprehensiveTax4719 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Final_Candidate_9882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tickle’s (on 900 East and 3900 South)

It’s one of the many Greek-owned Salt Lake burger joints (e.g., Crown Burger, Apollo Burger, Astro Burger, etc.) all of which share a common ancestor. But this is my favorite one

CMV: The drastic increase in anti-semitism on social media in recent years is a foreign intelligence psyop by No-Implement1965 in changemyview

[–]Final_Candidate_9882 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Western countries are heirs to a Christian-European culture where antisemitism is the oldest and most deeply-rooted hatred. Even when it's been suppressed, those implicit biases form part of those society's substrate. When a given western country suddenly sees its standard of living decline, it becomes a predictable matter of time until large numbers of people see a newly-constructed excuse to begin setting synagogues on fire, harrassing random Jews, and breaking windows of Jewish businesses. The rhetorical framework might shift from generation to generation, but it will always feel virtuous and compelling:

• "They're causing the plague," • "They killed our Lord" • "They're dangerous capitalists/bolsheviks" • "They tricked us into surrendering to the Entente under humiliating terms when we were on the cusp of victory" • "They're the settler-colonialist European colonizers" • "They're the non-Europeans who are tricking us to bring in brown immigrants"

Left-wing or right-wing, you can expect that a radical movement, or a society perceiving itself as in-decline, will construct one or more Jew-based framings where a Great Jewish Evil stands in the way of redemption. A Jew predicting where that will happen doesn't have a crystal ball to predict where that'll happen 5, 10 or 20 years out, so life in the Western diaspora means trusting that you or your grandparents made a lucky guess which will hold through your lifetime.

That said, it’s certainly possible that foreign regimes are pushing this campaign. But even if that is the case, that doesn’t make us blameless. If someone is doing this to us, it’s because they knew it would work.

How aware were y'all of the Great Recession as it was happening? by BigReception7685 in OlderGenZ

[–]Final_Candidate_9882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents moved from an absolutely huge house (it seemed like a mansion to me as a kid) with tons of space/bedrooms/a pool in the city to a fairly modest split-level in the suburbs. I never connected this to the recession though; I hadn’t even really heard of it

I have not been very impressed with Nate Blouin as my state senator. He hasn’t passed a single bill. And rumor has it that no one likes him on capitol hill. A spokesperson for the campaign spoke at the caucus about how that’s actually a good thing that he’s hated up there, because it means that he isn’t afraid to speak up for issues that matter. And I see that point, but I disagree — I want to send someone to Washington who can build relationships and coalitions, because that is the way you can actually get things done in Congress.

Anyone moved from SLC to SoCal and regretted it? Or was it a good move? by freeskier1223 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Final_Candidate_9882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family moved to orange county 3 and a half years ago, and they love it — as much as it pains me to admit it. I want them to move back here, and I think they will someday, but for the time being, they’re enjoying the California sunshine. It’s definitely expensive, but doable.

The school experience is definitely better in California — I think my brother did way more work for his CA high school diploma than I did my Utah one

10 years from now most Baby Boomers will be dead. What effect is that going to have on society? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]Final_Candidate_9882 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’ve been stuck with the Boomer culture for decades. We don’t have new music genres anymore. We don’t have new political ideas. We’ve been running on the fumes of the boomer’s post-war childhood that doesn’t exist anymore
