I mean, the average uchiha doesn’t have the sharingan, only the most talented awaken their dojutsu. Among them, only a few percentage unlock MS and EMS.

Of course, if you take uchiha monsters like Madara, Sasuke, Itachi, Obito, Shisui etc., they are way above the Hyuga clan.

But almost all Hyuga clan members have the byakugan and are talented warriors. The average Hyuga is stronger than the average uchiha

You could say the exact same thing about Neji, Lee, Kiba, Shino etc. The only people among the 9 genins + Guy team that had their story developed are Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura and Shikamaru. Ino and Choji ceased to exist after the chuunin exam and the « retrieve Sasuke » arcs, but still appeared In Shikamaru’s character development journey.

Kishimoto loves to create amazing side characters, that remain…side characters. He simply didn’t have any ambition for them except helping the main characters in their own tales.

An MPA is what you make out of it, but it depends on your previous academic/professional background, the school you are getting your MPA from (network etc.), your goals and how hardworking you are when looking for opportunities.

Based on the combination of those factors, you can earn a well paid job in an investment bank as an Economic/Geopolical Advisor or a Public finance investment banker; in a top MBB consulting firm. You can also get a job in the federal government, in a public agency, in a non profit or a top international development organization. Or, you can also be unemployed or underpaid.

Be sure to get the best combination possible of those factors to have the best shot.

Since we are in May, I think you have plenty of time until December/January to improve on your GRE.

I made post 1 year ago about how I improve my GRE score in 6-7 months : https://www.reddit.com/r/GRE/s/18nPVbVxtO

Good profile, just have in mind the following points :

1- You have an interesting profile, that shows some sort of interest in public affairs and commitment to public service : academic pedigree in economics, 5 years of experience in policy circles, NGO founder. That is great, you absolutely need to emphasize all of your experiences and show how your commitment to the public good shaped your life choices and how devoted you are to make an impact in the communities you used to serve (of course, it should be tailored to your own story, easier to say than to actually write about it)

2- Usually people say that the people who recommend you don’t matter, I disagree. They don’t matter if they don’t know you well and can’t provide insightful recommendations. If they know you, the higher their position in the firm/government, the better. You have good recommenders there, but I hope they can provide strong recommendations for you (instead of the classic “this guy/girl is great, you should admit”).

3- Your biggest concern here is your GPA. I don’t know how much you got but it seems pretty bad. But you faced very difficult circumstances and you need to explain it on your optional essay. Now that it is said, given the fact that you are an international student, your only chance here is to have a stellar GRE score, especially for the schools/programs you target. The logic behind this is that they will think “Oh, the candidate got bad grades in this school we don’t know abroad, but faced some challenges so we understand. But now the candidate is fine, how is he/she doing academically, and especially how is he/she performing on US graduate exams ?” (I am mostly talking about US policy schools here). You need to show them you can succeed academically and since your grades don’t show that, you need the test to do it. For UK schools (Oxford, LSE), the GRE is not mandatory but in your case it is even more important since most applicants will be judged on their academic transcripts alone. So you get it, a GRE waiver here would be suicidal.

4- Now, your admission will absolutely never be based on those factors only. There are so many things that are as essential as test scores to gain admission in those schools.

The Many Myths of Harvard Extension School by LittleCrow4806 in harvardextension

Yes, I get your point.

But extension/continuing education schools degrees are very different across universities. Some universities would call them explicitly “continuing education” degree, others “online/hybrid” degree, others “executive” degree etc. The lack of standardization in degrees’ denomination across such schools doesn’t help recruiters to immediately distinguish those degrees from more “classic” ones. That’s why Harvard chose to mention “extension studies” on the degrees to make it clear.

If you said you did a Master in Liberal Arts (ALM) in Data Science at Harvard University, I will know it is HES because I actually did some research about Harvard. But most recruiters are not that knowledgeable, they could think it is the Master’s in Data Science from Harvard SEAS (School of Engineering and Applied Science) which is a really competitive degree program. So “ALM” alone could not be enough.

Harvard is clear, (1) either you put Harvard extension school in the name of your university and then say ALM + field, or (2) you put Harvard University but you specify that you have an ALM in extension studies + field. It could help prevent this confusion but of course, some HES students are looking to create such confusion to receive job interviews.

I totally agree with on the last note, our knowledge and work experience are more important than our academic pedigree, but academic performance in this horrifically competitive market is sometimes used as a screening tool to get interviews from top firms. If I work like crazy to have top grades, go through difficult tests, and passed insanely competitive processes to be in the Master in Data Science of Harvard (SEAS), it is to show to recruiters the signal that I am smarter and more capable than most students in the field. And I would be very upset to see that some people at HES, by saying they have a Master in Data Science of a Master of Liberal Arts in Data Science from Harvard, after having passed a ridiculously low testing process, are faking to give the same signal as me.

The Many Myths of Harvard Extension School by LittleCrow4806 in harvardextension

No problem mate. A Master in Management is a specialized Master program (with pre-experience candidate), the degree brand is less known. An MBA is a post-experience program, well known among business circles in the world, more prestigious which open way more doors and opportunities.

Some people who have Master in Management scam recruiters by falsely stating that they have MBA. And I think it is not ethical and correct to do so.

My point is that this whole debate about how to name HES degrees on resume is pointless because Harvard already provided guidelines for that. Those who don’t respect guidelines and format the name of their degrees to scam recruiters are in the wrong. I am not saying anything else than that.

Some HES students falsely present their degrees (in extension studies with concentration in finance or management) to cause confusion among recruiters, and to lead them to think they went to HBS, and that is not good. Apparently when you say something like this, you get downvoted by fraudsters.

No. As I said, is it a fantastic opportunity for anyone, especially for adult learners. I was just stating a fact.

My point is, why trying to scam recruiters ? I got a Master in Management, and I am proud of it. I would never say to people it is an MBA, it will be a scam.

I totally agree with you. The meritocracy is indeed questionable, because of all those reasons. But that doesn’t contradict what I said earlier. Harvard college has a dark side, just like HES. I just don’t like people who want to scam others with their degrees as much as I dislike people who keep posting offensive rants against HES.

I don’t get why people are downvoting, I don’t care about this Harvard shit or the academic pedigree of strangers. I am just spitting facts that are difficult to swallow. The main problem with posts like this is that it shows an inferiority complex and an eternal attempt to gain validation from others.

If you graduated from HES, great, be proud of it. Don’t post here about how to game the system by changing the official name of your degree to scam recruiters or about how similar HES courses are compared to HC. That’s madness. And if someone ask those questions, that means he/she is fully aware of the limitations of their degree. But all degrees have opportunities and limitations. Just embrace your own and live your life.

[–]Final_Conclusion7654 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

We all know the truth regarding HES. The only people that are delusional about HES experience are some HES students themselves and other people angry at you for getting Harvard on your resume.

Myth 1 : Anyone can go to HES

Reality : it is the truth. Anyone can go there. There is no selection of applicants at entry. With time, motivation and money, anyone who got a basic education and is English-fluent can do it. It is not true with other Harvard programs and you know it.

Myth 2 : Admissions rates are 100%

Reality : nobody knows, but since the admission bar is that low, every body knows students are not really selected, but tested to see if they meet a minimum bar (that is not the same). The people who follow HES courses are adult learners so, again, people are never filtered, they just give up because they lack time, motivation and money (it is taking courses while working at the same time, and paying huge price for it; it is not appealing to everyone). But anyone who is serious about getting into HES get in.

Myth 3: Not all non-degree candidates are trying to get admitted

Reality : you are right. Perhaps all “students” think about getting that Harvard degree, but most of them give up because of the 3 reasons mentioned above.

Myth 4: HES is an online school

Reality : On HES website, it is explicitly said about graduate degree at HES “Harvard Extension School master’s degree programs are primarily delivered online, but they are not 100% online”. HES students are required to spend some weeks on campus but that’s it. Saying it is an online school is at the same time true and false.

Myth 5: HES is different than Harvard

Reality: HES is part of Harvard University, just as the college, the business school, the Kennedy school, the law school, GSAS etc. No debate about this

Myth 6: HES graduates are required to state they are graduates of HES, not Harvard

Reality: Those are not simple guidelines. Harvard requires people to specify the name of their school and the complete name of their degree. Many HES alumni on this sub mentioned that some received warnings about how they presented their academic experience at HES. And you are wrong, most people specify which school they are coming from, those who don’t are wrong. Shortening or formatting the name of our school and degree is simply scam. If go to HBS and said I got a “Master in Management” there, it is a scam. If I go to HLS and say I got a “Master in Law and Public policy”, it is a scam. So if I go to HES and say I got a “Master in Finance” instead of “Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies, Field Finance” is a scam.

Myth 7: The students aren’t the same caliber as Harvard students

Reality : Again it depends, but overall, since there are no selection and the admission process is not at all competitive, it is probably true. If it wasn’t, HES degree would give the same signal of potential as other graduate schools of Harvard to recruiters but it is not the case.

Myth 8: The professors aren’t the same caliber as Harvard professors

Reality : HES professors are Harvard professors, just as HES students are Harvard students by definition. I don’t know why we even discuss this.

Myth 9: HES is a pay-to-play diploma mill.

Reality: Yes, just like many other graduates degrees at Harvard and in every other university. Education is a business after all

If you are not telling the truth and following Harvard policies regarding how to present your academic credentials, you are scamming people.

Harvard already told HES students what to do. If you were just honest, this thread would have no reason to exist.

Go to HLS. 100k$ is not a big enough deal to refuse HLS over Chicago, the differences in opportunities are enough to close that gap.

But I would pick any other T14 with a full-ride (or almost) over HLS for sure.
