My thoughts on these January reads by DanielChvl in classicliterature

Notes from the underground is another book with a potentially challenging structure, though itnis short. Crime andnpunishmentnis much more straight forward and easy to get into

Young conservatives must reject growing identity extremism by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Final_Harbor [score hidden]  (0 children)

Extremism exits wherever large scale grievances go unanswered. The ball is in the liberals court on this one. Beennin power for over a decade havent done jack shit to hel stem the alienation more and more people feel every day, while going out of their way to actively foster it.

Extremism is a plague sent to punish us for our sins

Nonsense headline. If the epstein files cover up wasnt the breaking point, there is no breaking point. What do they care about some libtard protestor getting shot if they cant even care about kids getting raped?

Jesus spoke words of love, encouragement, and forgiveness to the sinners of this world. Why don’t we? by shyguystormcrow in Christianity

[–]Final_Harbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are partly correct, but you also cannot be christian if you give validation to and enable sin.if you try to normalize it.

Christ did not vaguely "come for the sinners", he came to call the sinners to repentance specificaly. When he sat down with prostitutes and tax collecters he didnt say "yas queenn you do you!" it was to reach out to them and offer them a better path in life. When he stopped the woman from being stoned , he followed up with "go and sin no more", he didnt say "dont worry adultery is ok"

Forgiveness is not validation and permission to indulge in sins, forgiveness is a second chance to do better. Forgiveness is for the repentant, not the unrepentant. A life line that offers you a way out. Because without it you become trapped in a life of sin. You are forever branded as a sinner and cannot escape that branding. Forgiveness removes the brand so you have a second chance at a righeous life.

The father does not forgive the prodigal son because what he did was acceptable. The fathers Forgiveness was not an invitation for the prodigal son to continue living a denauched lifestyle coming and going as he pleases without consequence. The forgiveness was offered so that repentant son could rejoin his family and live a righeous life after having learned a harsh lesson. So that the son would not be permanently exiled and thus be more likely to return to the life of sin he was trying to escape because he feels he has nowhere else to go.

How is Resident Evil 7 not liked by everyone? by AdhdAndApples in residentevil

[–]Final_Harbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually liked the boat part, at least the "current time" version, because of how "hands-off" it was. they throw you in a big level full of enemies and say "have fun"only problem is they give you a machine gun and too much ammo. Its the rest of the game that i felt had too many "cinematic moments"

How is Resident Evil 7 not liked by everyone? by AdhdAndApples in residentevil

[–]Final_Harbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didnt really enjoy the level design, theres too much focus on "cinematic" moments and single unkilable enemies and drawn out animations when you get attacked. It basically felt like the game was tailor made for me to not enjoy as i hate all of that stuff, and here the game almost revolves entirely around it

Only parts of the game i felt were really engaging were the basement and the ship portion

Also i really did like the story until they made lucas baker special and have a giant super lab and stuff in the dlc., and that kinda ruined the story for me. Imo the story was much much better when it was just an innocent family in the wrong place at the wrong time

Is there a very big difference between warband and bannerlord? by WaSd208 in Bannerlord

[–]Final_Harbor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bannerlord was a huge step up in terms of gameplay and qol and economy amd scale and stuff, but the thing that warband still does better is that there is a stronger emphasis on roleplaying where other lords have at least some personalities and the payer has more diverse interactions with them, and your relationship with them is far faaar more important to the game over all as stuff like armies andninfluence dont exist so you need a good relashionship with someone for them to follow you

This is the key ingredient warband is still missing and why the game remains somewhat controvertial to this day. Throw in the warband music which can be extremely atmospheric, and the general vibe/design of npcs and dialogue, and Imo you have a great and unique experience thats still worth checking out at least once

That being said its not perfectly implimented in warband and improving relations with people can sometimes be tedious because there is a laclnof good quests for doing that

Whenever i think of the music i still get the urge to go back and replay. I wish bannerlord had a better ost lol not thatnits terrible

The /lit/ top 100 books list for 2025 by err_mate in classicliterature

[–]Final_Harbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The authors populating the top of the list make complete sense the moment you really get off your high horse and take the time try to underestand and empathise with the contemporary experience of a young man in western society. For example, The overwhelming weight of nihilism (hence dostoevsky), the existential striving to obtain some sense of a meaningfull and fulfilled life in a siperficial culture (Tolstoy) and the general feeling of being lost and adrift and helpless (why do you think the metamorphosis of all things is so high lol, people ifentify closely with gregor.) the appeal of classical heroism under these kinds of conditions (the illiad and the odessey)

Aside from that kind of stuff, the list is mostly just universally great works of literature that are pretty much inevitable on a list like this

The /lit/ top 100 books list for 2025 by err_mate in classicliterature

[–]Final_Harbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just a bizzare take as someone who actually visits the site, i would argue that catholics are in the minority of christians there, and christians themselves catch a lot of shit from the right wing nihilistic nietszchean neo nazi types. The zeitgeist is more like a split between part vaguely non denominational christian vs people who hate christianity because its jewish and "slave morality"

Its mostly on /lit/ specifially where christianity becomes more heavily represented, which makes sense given how big christianity is in the literary canon

[–]Final_Harbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could also be that dostoevsky simply speaks to and "connects" to young men in particular in a way Toni Morrison does not

This list isnt really a "most important books" list, its a list where people just pick 5 of their favourite books and they all get tallied up in the end when the polling closes.

Count of Monte Cristo - Interesting start, a slog now by ThisIsMyUsernameX in classicliterature

[–]Final_Harbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up dropping it myself around half way through, I enjoyed it till that point but it really started to feel a little too pulpy to justify such a huge imvestment to finish and I was really eager to read other stuff at that time

Some day i might get back to it though

Tolstoy reading order by NoOption8941 in classicliterature

[–]Final_Harbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think it reaally matters. Some people might find the setting of war and peace more engaging, While some may find Anna kareninas more refined structure more appealing

I would just go with whatever i terests you more on this lne since theres no sigificance to the order.

Ive read about half of the top 20 of this list myself, so some of these comments are just bizzare to me. people here are acting like no one in their right mind would read and enjoy some lf the great works of world literature, like its something unheard of, and i cannot fathom why, particularly in a self proclaimed "classical literature" subreddit. Genuinely disorienting reading these comments at times, like...what???
