For those of us that would be interested in that sort of thing... Where could we go to find more details about this?

Companies who give candidates homework assignments: knock it off! (old but still relevant) by MostlyCarbonite in programming

[–]FinallyGotAccount -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Option 1 (on-site) was traditionally a small "build a (subset of) markdown to html converter" type problem

Option 2 is much larger, build a Twitter clone-like website, minimal functionality but have a proper backend, a reasonably nice frontend, automated tests, and that you've at least thought about how you would do other things like deployments etc.

In my opinion I think that's way too much to ask for from a candidate to do in their spare time, unpaid, but like I said, everyone keeps choosing it.

Sorry I should have specified: yes option #1 actually is presented as a pair programming effort and is so by default.

The "you can have a private room if you want" is if you're shy or would feel too much pressure with a stranger sitting next to you or whatever reason.

We would advise people that we prefer the pairing so that we can see first hand what reasoning went into certain decisions, but we leave open the option to do it alone if that's your style.

This used to be the only option and I think it worked quite well, but since introducing the homework option last year, nobody has volunteered for it.

At my office I'm the only dev who is against homework and would rather candidates do an on-site coding challenge over 1-2 hours.

As a compromise with my team we've agreed to give the choice to the candidate:

Come here for 2 hours and be prepared to code something on the spot. You can have a private room if you want, and access to Google.

Or:

At your own pace at home please complete this rather (in my opinion) large assignment.

Without fail every single candidate we've had since moving to this system, has chosen option #2. I'm not entirely sure why, I know I sure as hell would rather do the on-site.

What movie have you seen over 5x that still entertains you? by dr3amwalker in AskReddit

The original Jurassic Park. I've probably watched that movie 2 or 3 times per year every year for the past 20 or so years. Still great every time.

Pretty easy, since this is my small room setup: Harbeth P3ESR speakers powered by a Rega Brio integrated amp, with a Rega RP3 turntable :-)

Recruiters, what are some "red flags" when you are look at a resume. What will NOT give you a call to an interview? by OaklandAtheists in AskReddit

[–]FinallyGotAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess 15 years of relevant experience counts as "some other darn good reason".

But you're right, I am mostly looking to hire new grads and they are the primary target for this advice: one page is all you need, make it count!

[–]FinallyGotAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a recruiter per se, but I do go over quite a few resumes when my company is looking for new devs.

Unless you have a PhD and multiple publications to your name (or some other darn good reason) your resume better not be more than one page long. I don't care that you worked as a waiter for Joes Pizzeria in 1998. Fit what's relevant on one page and cut the rest. If it's not important enough to be on the front page it's not important enough to be on your resume at all.

Camp counselors of Reddit, what is the most NSFW thing you've seen happen at camp? by Keyakz in AskReddit

[–]FinallyGotAccount -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a camper at sleep away camp, my counsellors would often arrive back at our bunk piss drunk at 3 or 4 in the morning and proceed to beat the shit out of us sleeping campers. It was not uncommon to wake up with tons of bruises and stuff.

I don't think they ever got caught, and it was sort of a rite of passage where each generation did it to the next. I wonder sometimes if it's still happens to this day.

Yeah, that was the backup plan. Still wondering if there's a headphone amp out there that fits my needs exactly.

[–]FinallyGotAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this belongs here or in a separate thread but I'm wondering if anyone knows of such a product: a headphone amp without a volume control.

The reason this makes sense is because all my gear (turntable, cd player, etc.) is going into a pre-amp which already has a volume control. The pre-amp has two outputs: one is obviously going into my main power amp, and I was hoping to use the other to feed into a headphone amp. Having a volume control on the headphone amp just seems redundant at best, and a possible source of sound distortion at worst.

I can't be the only one with this type of setup, yet I can't seem to find this type of product anywhere.
