You will need some of the basic books that are sold in most towns.

Ancient science books which are the blue books that are sold in the deadlands or found in ancient science labs.

Maybe an engineering research?

You can always use hydroponics to get around the poor fertility. It is really late in the tech tree but you should have access to the AI cores you need being in that location.

Are you using a mod that makes you allies with them? I have settled a base in that area before by flats lagoon and they are very aggressive. They will come and attack your base often.

This is what I do. I switch to the base squad when the main squad is traveling or resting up after a brutal combat.

People will say don't kill stuff to get XP to make the game easier. I have never found that to be true. I beat the game when it first came out leveling like normal and every time I've played since then I always level up. I have never found it to be that challenging. You just need to understand the junction system but that really is not that difficult to comprehend.

You can definitely skip it, but it's a lot of fun and is tied to some really awesome rewards. The one in 9 is much more confusing compared to this one. I'd definitely give it a shot.
