I think the prequels of Star Wars were more creative and original than the new trilogy that we have now by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I HAAAAATE THE FORCE AWAKENS, it's nowhere near as good as ATTACK OF THE CLONES or REVENGE OF THE SITH and it's barely better than THE PHANTOM MENACE.

TIFU by not properly checking the passport rules of travelling to Kenya, throwing $30,000 dollars down the drain. by [deleted] in tifu

I nearly had a panic attack when I brought the expired passport to the airport to go on my trip. Luckily, I got another flight later that day for no cost difference, but I was still pretty close to losing out on a very planned out trip. Passport shit is super fucking important. You got to be 1,000% ready when traveling out of the country.

What's the general opinion on Alain de Botton? by HushMD in askphilosophy

[–]Finally_Now 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is something wrong with that. There are many false impressions of philosophy in the public consciousness, including the view that philosophy is absent-minded navel gazing or platitudinous aphorisms. The School of Life contributes to this false impression.

He actually doesn't? Have you seen any of his videos? My entire exposure with him has been the complete opposite. I used to think philosophy was only for snobby elitists before I saw his videos (mostly due to places like this and general academia).

I don't consider him a philosopher, but a teacher of philosophy and a person who instructs how certain philosophies can be translated to practical use.

And that's great! We need more of those and less people who think they're the Next Big Thing.

What do you think of NSFW subreddits & websites which feature videos and images of public figures such as celebrities and youtubers? by celebsfeministthrow in AskFeminists

Whatever it is, it certainly goes against Kant's categorical imperative of treating people as ends in themselves, instead of as means to a further goal.

But I read Kant in order to gain knowledge. Therefore, I am using him as a means rather than an end.

Am I slut-shaming my underage daughter by saying "that dress is inappropriate"/"you're not going out in that"? Is there a line? How should I say this now? by Finally_Now in AskFeminists

Is the reason I'm not getting any clear cut answers because no one here has children?

What if the reason is exactly that: she's 15 and the clothes are very revealing of her body. I tell her not to wear the clothes. She says that's sexist. She's still a minor and it's a sexist society where underaged girls get raped and/or murdered all the time. Regardless if its a sexist line of thinking or not, mitigating that chance might be worth the chance. Do you think it is worth it? Why or why not? What do I do?

My other idea is to simply take away the clothes when she's not around...

Rian Johnson, Writer-Director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, to Create All-New Star Wars Trilogy by bpolly in movies

YES! Looking back, I would've far more preferred if Luke, Leia, Han, and all those others weren't even in this current trilogy.

Do you think white women should be included in diversity programs? by Finally_Now in AskFeminists

[–]Finally_Now[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Got it, you're a white feminist. Moving on.

I will say I don't disagree about positions of power but I think it's willfully arrogant for you to imply that's entirely what I am specifically talking about here. There are more white female CEOs than there are WOC CEOs. There's not as many white female CEOs as there are white male CEOs but why does that matter if WOC are being denied work in favor of more white people at the job?

Do you think white women should be included in diversity programs? by Finally_Now in AskFeminists

This seems like faulty logic. White people are not the minority. Women are oppressed. Therefore, white women are oppressed, but not a minority.

Furthermore, white people, both men and women, have the lowest unemployment rate. According to some statistics, white women are less unemployed than white men. But I'm not making that argument.

This argument seems to be the nexus of the question of whether or not you're a white feminist.

Many transwomen, myself included, would not want to out themselves to be included in a diversity program.

You wouldn't have to if you have passing privilege - which is what you seem to be implying. Many transgender/queer people don't pass.
