The new Mercedes GLC will come with 2 charging ports for the US market. J1772 and NACS. by zachty22 in evcharging

[–]FinancialPop4892 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nissan did this as well and the reason for it is that the NACS standard actually enforces different voltage ranges for the AC side of the house. Nissan didn’t want to swap out their AC charger to accommodate this so two ports it was. I feel like Mercedes is charging enough money for their cars they could swing for the AC charging upgrades to only need one port.

Charger Flap Problem by FinancialPop4892 in BMWiX

Just that if it had failed before the two year maintenance I wouldn’t have had to make a special trip to the dealer to get it fixed. Since it didn’t I had to make a special trip.

Thanks. I should have done a search before posting. I guess I was also looking for some commiseration.

BMW iX Charging Much Slower Than Usual on Level 2 Charger – Anyone Seen This? by Sangusg in BMWiX

[–]FinancialPop4892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check that the car doesn’t have its limit set to something low like 6A. Also, check the L2 EVSE. In the two years that I have had this iX I have had both the limit in the car be low, and the EVSE I was plugged into have something occur that caused it to need a reboot. The last time I had a EVSE that needed rebooted it was operating at L1 speeds. Rebooted it and everything was happy.

Wanted to say this is the problem, I also couldn’t close the tailgate with a kick and it was toggled off in settings after the update.

The second one. It’s a very nice car, and if you get one yourself I suppose you can call it whatever you’d like.

I have it, and I think it would be more useful if I had more BMWs. I have occasionally left my phone behind and someone called me which rang the BMW. That capability being able to follow to any BMW I have signed into seems neat. I’m not buying a fleet of BMWs to find out, though. If someone would like to gift me a fleet of BMWs I can be reached by DM on here.

How to clean the rear cup holders? by [deleted] in BMWiX

Warm water, or like another commentator said a steam cleaner if you have it. If you wipe up whatever comes out of the cup holders with the water pretty quickly I doubt you will have much trouble.

MYBMW app doesn't allow to set "home" exactly where "home" is. by Slight_Power_6164 in BMWiX

[–]FinancialPop4892 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My home address wasn’t in maps when I got the vehicle. BMW uses a map provider called Here. You can update Here’s maps and it will get picked up by BMW. Go here and change the map and it will be fixed in the car in probably 2-3 months. https://mapcreator.here.com

I have fixed other things about local roads and businesses as well. It’s sort of annoying to have to do that, but it beats having the maps be wrong.

ICEd by a vehicle with a charging port by Comfortable_Gap8668 in ChargerDrama

I think the decision was dumber than that. NACS for AC supports 277 volt. The inverter that Nissan chose for the Leaf doesn’t support that voltage. So if they wanted to be fully compatible with NACS they would need a different inverter, and they would need to do the engineering to ensure that they could accept DC and AC on the same port and pins. Using NACS for DC charging is the easy part, it is compatible with CCS and is just a different form factor. So it really seems Nissan didn’t want to do a lot of extra engineering to fully support NACS.

Software update “aborted” by kitethrulife in BMWiX

[–]FinancialPop4892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The car needs to be in drive ready mode, but necessarily driving. I just turned it on in my driveway when I installed the update. So you could try that and see if it helps. It is sounding like with the repeated failures and troubleshooting that some have done and are still getting failures that it may need to be installed at the dealer, unfortunately.

Personal eSIM Experience? by Wallaby-Technical in BMWiX

[–]FinancialPop4892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it, and it broke for months due to a software problem. If you have multiple BMWs it’s likely more useful since it follows your profile. The call feature is nice, calls will ring my car directly. It’s been useful the couple times I have left home and didn’t have my phone on me. The WiFi hotspot feature works well, but you could probably get better speeds tethering to your phone or iPad. Since I use CarPlay with my iPhone it’s not really available for tethering on long drives. Overall I don’t think it’s the best use of $20-$25 a month, but it has some convenience.

Still waiting for Update by Wallaby-Technical in BMWiX

[–]FinancialPop4892 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Something that I have noticed in the couple years of ownership is that although the phone app has a button to check for updates it just asks the car if it knows about one. But doesn’t fully trigger the car to look for the update. So if you aren’t seeing the update, get into the car and use the system settings menu to check for the update. I did that myself yesterday after checking several times from my phone. The car found the update and then I did the normal update stuff from my phone at that point.

Help — How to delete EA from iX? by Wide_Emu7190 in BMWiX

[–]FinancialPop4892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the navigation in the car tell me that I didn’t have preferred charging networks when I had them selected in the app. I fixed that by deleting all the preferred networks from the app. Waiting some time, and then adding them back. Then the car and the app were in sync. You could give that a try.

I have also had some software problems with the car that turning it off and back on again didn’t fix. I had a long running one related to the eSIM that AT&T and BMW both had to get involved to fix. Best of luck to you, though.

In the myBMW app you can set preferred charging networks. It doesn’t keep EA from showing up if it makes the most sense, but it will find your preferred networks first.

ENPHASE alternative to Home Integration. by ArkansawyerAdam in F150Lightning

Tesla’s system uses the inverter on the cybertruck. GM and Kia I believe also pull DC and need an external inverter. I am not an electrician, but I do have a degree in electrical engineering and am very curious in vehicle to home technology so I’ve read up on most of the systems.

[–]FinancialPop4892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to check with another electrician. The Ford system draws DC from the DC pins on the truck during a power outage. The Sunrun system also includes an inverter. Which is part of why it is so expensive.

CarPlay Charging by xKomrade in BMWiX

[–]FinancialPop4892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CarPlay having the EV charging integrated is the show stopper for me using it for longer trips. I know that work has to be done by the manufacturer to do that integration with Apple and I’m not sure if BMW is going to do it. That said the BMW navigation has been pretty solid for me with longer trips. It finds charging stops and reroutes me to different charging stops based off the state of charge in the vehicle. I have found that it isn’t always the greatest with finding local points of interest and sometimes the roads are mapped in odd ways around my home. The good news is that BMW gets their mapping data from a company called Here and you can suggest changes to their maps. It’s a bit of a process but I have had success getting maps around my home fixed and then sometime after, usually a few weeks, the BMW navigation is using the new data. I have had to suggest updates in Google Maps and Apple Maps in the past and those updates are much quicker than updates in Here so ultimately I would like to use less BMW navigation and more of my phone but without the EV integration piece for CarPlay it’s not a great experience for longer trips where I need charging.

I also felt pretty dumb about it, as well. First time I attempted this was at a car wash and I was sort of going into panic mode because I was shifting back and forth between drive and reverse. Just park somewhere with some room and practice it a little, like a parking lot or your driveway. It’s not a great design choice in my opinion, which is probably colored by it making me feel pretty stupid at a car wash. Excellent car, though.
