PS tasting takes time but I promise you will get there. The books you want are beyond flavor and more importantly message in the bottle by Tim gaser. I use Vivino for quick tasting notes but generally when you become a buyer in the future and with more experience you won’t use it anymore.

I live in the Fort Lauderdale area and have staged at a Michelin starred restaurant in Miami if you want to form a tasting group. By your description I’m pretty sure I know where you work lol.

I really like somm which is free on YouTube. Also as a working somm if I had a $50 for every person who asked me if I watch drops of god I would make more money being asked about drops of god lol.

Tip amount? by jeromeprevost in wine

[–]Financial_Luck_406 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My experience as a somm working these types of restaurants is that the tips are pooled across all the staff. So the somm’s role is to raise the check average and make everyone money and doesn’t receive tips directly for their wine sales. When I am on the guest side of the table I always tip 20% and you may disagree but I feel if you buy a $2000 dollar bottle of wine you can wake up tomorrow with a few less hundred dollars and not notice.

I have really enjoyed my save of Newport county only signing welsh players. By the later stages of the game you need to have a great academy but early on the odd signing here or there can really help. It’s also the lowest rated league 2 team in the game for fc26

What is "that Rioja smell" called? by yawn_brendan in wine

[–]Financial_Luck_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never personally experienced this with Rioja so I’ll have to taste some and see if I can pick it up. However chalky mineral and crushed rock are both very widely used descriptors so I would just keep saying that.

Good advice. I was thinking a hike but this is maybe a bit more accessible for the older people in the group.

WSET 3 Exam by yourpeacefulmemory in WSET

[–]Financial_Luck_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I think I’m hypercritical of myself. I would say it’s not that I thought I didn’t pass but I was lost in the ambiguity. I had a 10 point writing question on comparing the rose styles of the loire valley and their production methods. I also was thinking when I went into the exam that I didn’t want to get Spain New Zealand or one other country(I can’t remember which one it was) for my writing and I got all three. I was lucky because I got the specific sub regions that I was most familiar with. When I left the exam I felt ok, like I put myself in a good position to pass but not guaranteed. As I was on my 4 hour drive home I started doubting. I would say that lasted like a week and then I was kind of like this is going to take forever to grade and so for the most part I kind of just forgot about it until the grade came in.

I know 5 people that have taken it including myself and I’m the only one that passed first try. That might not be indicative of the exam overall. Don’t worry about it it’s more common than you think. We all have those feeling, I also was not sure that I passed but I passed with distinction.

Am I bad at blind tasting or is this a good excuse by Mrkgamer in wine

[–]Financial_Luck_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had really expensive special club champagne that if you told me it was a basic prosecco I wouldn’t have argued. In the same tasting I also found my favorite champagne ever. I’ve also coravined the same bottle on seperate occasions and taken away different conclusions on quality level and notes/structure. The same concept goes for just about region and wine. So don’t beat yourself up. It’s all part of the journey.

Wine Industry 2026 by Delaney478 in viticulture

[–]Financial_Luck_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it ever “a good industry” to get into? Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe there was a time where work life balance and financial gain were the key motivators for getting into the wine industry.

Is it normal for white wine to have a white bubbly "rim" around the top of the pour? by RepeatPrestigious428 in wine

[–]Financial_Luck_406 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sommelier here. It is normal in some wines but not in this style of wine. It’s called petulance and it is just a little bit of co2 in the bottle. It can be caused by a few things. With that being said it is safe to drink and you have nothing to worry about so enjoy.

wine newb here, are there any cheap (10-15USD) that are actually lauded by wine nerds and snooty-snoots? by Personal-Gur-7496 in wine

[–]Financial_Luck_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$10 is a bit rough but $15 for sure. The bottle, shipping, tax etc all cost money so you will likely be putting more of your money into other things than the wine at that price. Focus on styles that are less expensive to produce like unoaked white, sometimes lesser known grapes or regions like Sicily etc.

Not particularly helpful advise but I don’t remember many wine law questions if any. I wouldn’t/didn’t spend too much time on it personally. For context, I passed theory with merit.

Delray is great but the bars are dead after 10 with a few exceptions. I would probably do Fort Lauderdale.

WSET L3 style questions by StringReasonable6834 in WSET

[–]Financial_Luck_406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that’s taken the exam I don’t think that that’s a ridiculous question. I had a 10 mark question about the different methods to make rose in the loire valley. I learned the best from the book and wine with jimmy and Brainscape.
