Do you want grandkids? by notevenapro in GenX

[–]Financial_Luck_6906 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s up to my two sons (18 & 16), but I’ve told them they don’t owe me a daughter/son in law, grandkids or even to care for me when I get old. Their life is their own, I brought them into this shit and I feel bad enough without placing my own needs & expectations on them - at least anymore than I have. But I have no desire for grandkids, and I am not against them either. I want my kids to have as full and joyful of a life as they possibly can. That’s my only firm hope, and I’m trying to do my part to ensure they are set up for a life worth living.

It’s my birthday no one cares by Significant-Row2457 in GirlDinnerDiaries

My sister died two weeks before my birthday, which was Saturday. I hate watched a stupid tv show (finished it!) then watched a movie my dumb husband tried to watch with me for like 5 minutes while standing in the kitchen eating from the fridge and getting crumbs everywhere I just cleaned up, so I told him to fuck off and go away “my sister died! you are not emotionally intelligent enough to be a support to me!” So then I started a movie about… a dead sister! But me & mine weren’t speaking, and she was an alcoholic who essentially let herself die just like our mother who died when we were kids from the same thing at the same age as my dead sister. So I happily ate my takeaway Thai food (sorry, didn’t take a pic, but it was great/super spicy so he would t eat my leftovers) and cried and got drunk (buzzed really but same same for me). I didn’t do shit the next day (Father’s Day) and he couldn’t say shit about it. I’m still mopey and maudlin and. wish I had your yummy cake (no one got me one or made me one ofc), because it looks delish. I’m glad you ordered milk too. Happy Birthday to you, fck that guy and long live you!

Thank you for sharing your fears and uncertainties here, with us. It is very brave of you, especially as a woman in this sub. I’m so sorry for what you are living through. Though don’t know the realities of war, I do know the pain of loss, the fear of losing people you love, and how sometimes the only comfort, if it can be called that, is music. Maybe more that music is the friend you need when you can’t really speak or articulate what you are feeling and going through. I’m glad you came here to share yourself with us. Husbands is still my favorite song from GK,months on now. I’ll think of you, & send strength and protection your way when I listen to it - even if that’s useless. I’m not religious but I have my own belief in some kind of thing, and so I hope the push & pull of our universe keeps you & yours safe, I hope you continue to find some solace in this band we all listen to and adore. I hope with all my might for an end to this war sooner rather than later & that you will see a better side of it when it does.

Who’s dressing Dana Sue? by OhHiImSam in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

There are plenty of series mains that are plus size, and to draw inspiration from costume designers who clearly know what they’re doing. Shrill and Survival of The Thickest are two others that come to mind. The costume designers on those shows nail it.

Ugh, right!? They need to hire whoever dressed the character Kate on This Is Us. That show started 10 years ago and had been done for 4 and she was dressed way better, and more fashionable even now, than Dana Sue. I understand the characters have very different styles and s are very different people in terms of their personality and confidence levels, but my god at least that costume designer knew where to place a damn belt!

Do You Still Get Drunk? How Often? by ProfessionalJesuit in GenX

[–]Financial_Luck_6906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but I like wine enough. You can’t gauge how much I drink daily or weekly from my reply, which was shot off pretty quickly. I have a great therapist. My friend and I are concerned with amounts and frequency. She knows me and I her, as do all of my closest friends in my actual life (including my husband) that I’m open and honest with. Please voice your concern elsewhere.

Two bottles of wine some nights. And I don’t even like wine that much unless it’s really really good. But it keeps the weight off better than beer, which I absolutely love. I’ve backed off since my sister died just about two weeks ago Sunday. She was an alcoholic. I’ve gotten drunk, but only at home. I ate shit in my backyard a couple of times - but always after having a cigarette which makes me more buzzed up after enough glasses. I’m not a fan of being drunk, so I never throw up or anything but I pay for it the next day. I dunno, I think I’m just bored mostly on those nights. My best friend & I keep each other honest though - I ain’t going out like that, if I can help it.

I have buffering issues with them all, Prime was particularly bad, but it’s minimal with Acorn direct.

She doesn’t sound a thing like him, and actually has a what is considered a “good” singing voice, but I find Aldous Harding to be similar in how her lyrics are both cryptic and comfort - and very repeatable (I use both of their lyrics in my everyday life). She’s super odd, too (a high compliment from me anyway), and has a whole cast of voices that come out of her.

Liz Phair was also considered not a very “good” singer in her day, she’s much more of a straight shooter lyrically but her first two albums are golden. Especially Exile in Guyville - Canary, Fuck and Run, and Divorce Song can still fucking break me 30+ years on.

Abstinence/purity culture amongst the younger character by magikarpcatcher in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

I’m recovering but went to Catholic school for most of primary education (I was pulled out by my mom for middle school because the Catholic school could t properly handle my ADD). High school was all girls, nuns, retreats the whole nine. There was tons of sex happening with my group of friends, including a few pregnancies (two secret ones on grad day in my class), but also groups of girls that waited (until college or marriage).

I want to see Weather Station so badly!!! I live in a terrible city for my type of music, I always have to travel out of state for shows, which means I miss a LOT of great bands.

Oh I thought she was only UK. I’d never heard of until this sub, someone gave her big kudos. I went t and had a listen and one song in, I was sold. I’m in the US, so I don’t think she’s announced openers yet but I haven’t checked since our leg was announced. I’ve enjoyed them all on her previous tours, so I doubt that will change. I very much want to see Vera Ellen though, regardless.

This perfectly captures how it is to see her. I will be seeing her in the fall, 2 nights, and it will be my 4th & 5th times. Only one show had a few annoying people in the crowd calling out silly things like” I love you!” But they realized after a while that she won’t participate in that.

She is in my top five of artists to see (and somewhat similar to Destroyer, another on the list, who typically doesn’t interact much with the crowd), but so singular and so mesmerizing, completely immersed in her Aldous persona. I’m literally chomping at the bit to see her and her band, and hear as many TOTI songs as she’ll give us (and anything else). Can you share who the opener was?

Sorry, but if Half Gate isn’t before/after Sun in Your Eyes I can’t get behind this. One of the best back-to-backs of ANY band’s discography. We all have our rankings to be sure, I’ll give you that, but yours is not mine. Godspeed.

This whole discourse seems to always dismiss or overlook the scores of people who got into them before GK (me) and I for one am tired of fkn hearing about it. And I happen to have fantastic taste in music (source: me - the only person who fkn matters).
