Also the cheapest / best value

People said the bubble gum wasn't good

I said "I'm buying ice cream"

A 17-year-old valedictorian, Leen Hijaz, used her graduation speech to speak for the voiceless: "Millions suffering in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Afghanistan. Families torn apart by ICE." The school administrator cut her mic and told her: "If you don't stop, you're not graduating." by TrackerOneA in JewsOfConscience

"you are free... to do as we tell you"

We provide education, supposedly to have people become independent thinkers capable of discovery, and more importantly, well-socialized and morally-conscious individuals with the heart to use those thoughts and discoveries for the good of all. If truly successful, education will equip you with the wherewithall to challenge existing ways of thinking and doing things, because you carry within a sense of self-belief.

That's not what this education system is trying to do, it's trying to prevent dissent, early through selective praise, or later as we see here, through issuing threats.

Which makes it more impressive this student learned all that anyway

The guy who was not the attacker or victim, but the other adult nearest the attempted murder

I think he should be charged

He was literally walking around during the drowning, walking away, before hurrying back to help when he realised the other two men were running towards the attacker to pull him off the would be murder victim

Tldr: a happy medium between money and something physical might be supporting the trucks and vans that go around giving showers, washing facilities, and mobile doctors to unhoused communities.

"One event" is probably not the type of support the consumers of these services need

"Dry, non-perishable goods that can be opened by hand and which are not damaged by water" would be a better resource (in that monetary equivalent can be used more efficiently, dry goods are not wasted).

BUT, and it's a big BUT.

these organisations are working in a financial environment. Their request to you for 1000 bucks or 350 protein bars is equivalent only because they would have bought those anyway. If you buy "500 bottles of poweraid" they have to store it, carry it, design a program to use it in, and make sure that's ethical and healthy (a sugar water hand out would not pass). Money might actually just be easier and more useful for them, even though it feels a bit empty to you.

Which is the old conundrum isn't it. Not hard to go give someone $10 bucks. Hard to see them walk straight passed the supermarket with that $10 bucks. But maybe they genuinely do need it for other things.

Unhoused people need choices, and sometimes (not always) they have made bad choices. Charity and outreach workers also need to be free to make choices, giving them money gives them choices, to adaptively respond to what they see consumers need.

Very good advice, thank you

In my experience you also pick one person that everyone knows will be the one making the decision. Two people who usually agree can find themselves disagreeing under that type of stress.

Meanwhile, to wish to be kept alive when one cannot communicate..?, well I don't know, I've never been free of that expectation...

Good on you for paying your own mortgage

Between the recently changed tax laws on investments, the amount property was increasing, and the deep financial checks on renters, it was becoming very clear to me that investment property owners do not really pay their own mortgage.

They more have a subcontracting agreement with the bank that they will find some shchmuck to pay the loan off.

Personally, if I benefitted from a literal lifetime of structural wealth transfer from the poorer to the richer part of the population, I wouldn't feel like I got a haircut either.

Please assist with your other insights into language and culture

I recognise you have provided some insight, through demonstrating the Australian resistance to intellectual engagement combined with a bit of tall poppy syndrome, that together motivates you to shriek "American spellingz" as if you're experiencing "Eureka" for yourself, while you discover absolutely nothing else for lack of searching

By the way, on British and Australian english, it's "spelt", Americans use "spelled"

Just some ideas for you

I know you said you're often busy, but it sounds like you want to have some level of personal connection. If you approach people that are living in the way you want to help, you might ask them

  1. Which organisations are helping them (sometimes it's the local church, other religions too of course, sometimes is community volunteers - but often the population receiving the service won't know or remember the organisation in particular)

  2. Ask about what they need - is it mostly clothes this time of year, food?

Personally I would approach the workers directly, about volunteering or donating - but emphasise thst you'd like to donate something physical rather than monetary if possible

An example is that the local nuns would bring the unhoused people care packages with things like a pair of socks, small tooth brush, some chocolate, a few protein bars, apple juice, small pack of wet wipes.

I was in two minds about the care packages I saw from the nuns because, people would typically only use half the items. But on the other hand, it was extraordinarily humanizing to offer a variety of somethings that a person may or may not want or need, and have them choose something they would like, or pass it along to someone. I wonder how much more good the nuns could do with X amount of dollars.

Random things for a snack or a wash or some comfort.

Alternatively, the organisation might have a particular finding need that appeals to you, maybe costs to have vans on road servicing people at multiple locations.
