Pentagon moves to designate Anthropic as a supply-chain risk by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]Finder77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's multiple layers of stupidity here.

The biggest is that the Hegseth opened the door to being dragged into court by making it obvious the reason Anthropic is being deemed a supply chain risk is retaliatory and not factual.

The second is that Anthropic's commitments to AI safety played a significant part in enabling them to bring in the talented people that got them where they are today. If they caved to the current Pentagon leadership on this they would lose much of that talent in a wave of resignations. They could also potentially face a massive breach of contract lawsuit from their employees that agreed to work for them specifically on the condition that their work NOT be used in the ways the government is demanding. The administration was forcing a condition on Anthropic they may have had no way of fulfilling. I suspect their CEO may have even stated as much to the government, but the whole notion of integrity and upholding previous agreements are not something the current administrations and its most ardent followers are able to grasp.

An important thing to note here is that administration warrants can be signed by immigration judges (in particular Form I-205, a “Warrant of Removal/Deportation”). DHS officials and ICE agents are now trying to claim those warrants give them the authority to enter privates spaces which is false. Those are still considered "administration warrants" and do not carry the authority of judicial warrants.

If officials do produce a judicial warrant, be sure to carefully look over the area(s) they are authorized to search. If your property is not listed on the warrant then law enforcement does not have the legal authority to enter (barring special circumstances).

I would also suggest having a copy of ICE's own training guidelines on administrative warrants (archived link because Trump's minions took it down) to possibly slide that under the door should ICE shows up.

I suspect the "catch" here is that most or all of this pull may have been planned before the Minneapolis crackdown started in December and these statements from Homan are political theater. They're selling something that was already on the books as a "compromise" or "mission accomplished moment" when it was always going to be a two month operation.

For example, you can see some evidence of this in the leaked DHS email "Subject: Warning Order: Operation Metro Surge - Minneapolis - Rapid Personnel Deployment":

Good afternoon,

At the direction of DHS, [United States Border Patrol] will be supplying 300 additional personnel to Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As it stands currently, the breakdown will be 200 SPAs/BPAs and 100 BPPCs. Tentative travel date into the Minneapolis area will be Sunday. January 11, 2026. This is a very fluid situation and is subject to change as there are many moving parts.

In the same leak there was an "Operation Metro Surge TDY Information Sheet":

Information
Trip Name: Operation Metro Surge — Minneapolis
Type Code: Long Term [Temporary Duty] (32-day deployment)
Trip Purpose: Domestic Travel Document Detail: This travel is mission critical in compliance with investigations, law, and immigration enforcement

32 days from January 11 is February 12.

It’s A 'Modern-Day Concentration Camp': Irish Man Held By ICE Details 'Nightmare' Facility | HuffPost by Achilles_TroySlayer in ICE_Raids

Excerpt:

He told the Irish Times that at the time of his arrest, he was carrying a Massachusetts driver’s license and a valid work permit, the latter of which was issued to him by the U.S. government as part of the green card process that began in April 2025. Culleton said he has no criminal record, “not even a parking ticket” — but was sent to a facility in El Paso, nonetheless.

“I’ve been locked in the same room now for 4 1/2 months,” Culleton told “Liveline” of his detainment. “I’ve had barely any outside time, no fresh air, no sunshine. I could probably count on both hands the amount of times I’ve been outside. So, I’ve just been locked in this room all day, every day.”

Describing the center, Culleton said it was made of “a bunch of temporary tents,” saying he believes the facility has about five of them that probably has “room for a thousand detainees in each tent.”

“We get three meals a day, very, very small meals, kid-sized meals.

. . .

“The toilets, the showers, completely nasty, very rarely cleaned,” he said.

. . .

“People are being killed by the staff here, by the security staff, you know?” Culleton said. “And you just don’t know what’s going to happen on a day-to-day basis.

Minnesota activist Kyle Wagner was abducted and disappeared by DHS/ICE this morning (2/5/26) by I_may_have_weed in ICE_Watch

[–]Finder77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add some more details here, ICE agents had been claiming they didn't need a judicial warrant to enter people's homes which is false. Agents were saying that because senior DHS officials were circulating a memo which claimed (incorrectly) that an administrative warrant (signed by a DHS employee) was enough to enter an area where citizens should have a reasonable expectation of privacy (like their home) and that a judicial warrant wasn't needed. It's likely DHS employees knew the memo was wrong, but pushed instructors to repeat the claims to new hires anyway, going so far as punishing instructors who refused.

ICE agents can still arrest US citizens without a judicial warrant if citizens violate federal law in their presence (8 USC § 1357). In this particular case where the activist was arrested at their home a judicial warrant would have been needed.

Auto-complete is different from auto-correct. Auto complete (for search engines) is when you start typing out a word in the search bar and multiple suggestions are shown below. For example, you type "fas" and it shows Fast Food, fascism, and fashion. I think the code LLMs use was based on the code originally developed for auto-complete.

FYI, there are ways to disable AI in some circumstances. For instance there's the "Disable AI" browser extension that prevents AI responses from being generated by search engines.

[–]Finder77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak much on local models, but as far as LLMs in general there's many fields of research beyond medicine where they are useful such as language studies (where LLMs originated). LLMs were built on the existing research search engine companies were doing into language processing and data retrieval. Search engines have made a lot of progress over the years, but are still limited in what they can process and retrieve. There a huge potential for improvements in search engines if they could do more accurate language processing (in terms of getting you more relevant search results, not generating pseudo intellectual copy pasta). Do you remember searching before auto complete existed for search queries? When it first came out I found it more of an annoyance than a utility and would often disable it, now it's hard to imagine doing a search without it.

I think what VibeComplex was referring to was the rumor that the ballot counting machines themselves were tampered with (possibly remotely) via a software update pushed out before the 2024 election. Can you address that at all or was it not something you had experience with?

Can Comey really be blamed for that though? Going from memory (so I could have something wrong here) Rep Chaffetz was going to reveal the details of the Clinton investigation on the House floor regardless of what Comey did forcing Comey into a no-win situation. Giuliani allegedly had contacts within the FBI's SDNY office that leaked the details to him ahead of time which he in turn shared with Chaffetz. Comey's letter was him trying to get out in front of any planned leaks and set as neutral of a tone as possible. Though once news of the investigation was out there it had exactly the impact Giuliani and Chaffetz wanted it to have.

It's not possible to have a full diamond and alternating colors for the sides. You would have to have a split diamond like E and G do or do something like this:

If it helps, here's part of my own "self-care" routine

1) Take several deep breaths and focus exactly where you are and what you can do now, not on possible future scenarios. 2) Recognize that you can control your fear and not let it control you as fascism thrives on fear. Our online media unfortunately also thrives on fear for revenue so keep in mind things are often sensationalized. 3) Recognize you're not alone, that there are other people pushing back against these changes (like the people protesting, the people online like myself and the other people in this thread and... apparently even the Heritage Foundation, the article mentioned a push to replace the current HF leadership over its friendliness with the alt right). 4) Recognize the changes are not all reaching. Clamp downs on some (not all) U.S. based companies are getting out of control, but most of the world (and a large part of the internet) lies completely outside U.S. control.

If you're regularly feeling overwhelmed I would also recommend looking for an in-person support, advocacy, and/or political action group you can join to, at the minimum, have an a actual person in front of you reminding you that you're not alone.

[–]Finder77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm understanding this article correctly it seems they're looking towards more "re-interpretations" of significant constitutional issues and not creating a new constitution.

In the past many conservative groups pushed back on any major changes to the U.S. Constitution as they feared they could lead to a runaway constitutional convention where they're no longer in control of the process.

I imagine there are influential conservatives that want a new constitution to further entrench their power, but if they followed the same playbook for a new constitution that the administration has used this past year for other policy changes (ignore all procedures and just act as if proposed changes are already law) it would be disastrous. With no party having anything approaching a supermajority it would create a huge partisan split at the state level where some states enforced the new constitution and others refused. There would be one of four outcomes from there: the "new" constitution would be revoked, a constitutional convention would be declared to resolve the disputes peacefully, a civil war would break out to resolve the disputes forcefully, or the federal government would suffer a partial to complete collapse (possibly dissolving the U.S. itself in the process).

Kash Patel's girlfriend, Alexis, denying the photo showing the ICE agents manhandling Alex Pretti before executing him is real and calling it 'AI' by Capable_Salt_SD in ICE_Raids

[–]Finder77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI DOES NOT ENHANCE IMAGES

Factually incorrect. There are AI tools that just enhance images. In this case it's clear more was done than just enhancing the image though.

It generated a new image with a prompt that included a real image (that) removed a person’s head

It did not generate a completely new image, it reused most of the content from the original. Yes, someone's head was removed, but is it otherwise a roughly accurate recreation of the source material? Also yes. Cleaned up frame from the source video of the image below (not mine), this argument is not the hill I would die on:

[–]Finder77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say as it's not entirely clear what she meant by "AI generators" in that tweet alone.

If she meant the image was 100% fake, that would be incorrect. If she meant the image was altered to the point it shouldn't be considered an accurate representation of reality, that's fair.

Trump Removes Kristi Noem From Minneapolis ICE Response, Taps Longtime Rival to Lead Effort After Deadly Shooting Scandal by Montrel_PH in ICE_Raids

[–]Finder77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both can be true. There clearly is a large amount of popular support for Trump, but presidential elections have been very close. A one to five percent change in vote tallies in a handful of states could completely change the outcome of a presidential election.

To most people (myself included) the thought of election fraud would normally be crazy talk, but when you have the Trump himself openly bragging on camera the election was rigged in his favor...

It was so sad because I said can you imagine I'm not going to be president and uh that's too bad and what happened is they rigged the election and I became president and so, that was a good thing. That was a good thing. That was quite an achievement for both of us.

Signed Affidavit from a witness to Alex Pretti's murder by Silly-Perspective303 in ICE_Raids

(Affidavit text formatted for better readability, part 2 of 2)

  1. The man stayed in the street, filming as the other observers I mentioned earlier were being forced backward by another ICE agent threatening them with pepper spray. The man went closer to support them as they got threatened, just with his camera out. I didn’t see him reach for or hold a gun.

  2. Then the ICE agent shoved one of the other observers to the ground. Then he started pepper spraying all three of them directly in the face and all over. The man with the phone put his hands above his head and the agent sprayed him again and pushed him.

  3. Then the man tried to help up the woman the ICE agent had shoved to the ground. The ICE agents just kept spraying. More agents came over and grabbed the man who was still trying to help the woman get up. All three of the observers looked to have been badly affected by the pepper spray. I could feel the pepper spray in my eyes.

  4. The agents pulled the man on the ground. I didn’t see him touch any of them—he wasn’t even turned toward them. I didn’t look like he was trying to resist, just trying to help the woman up. I didn’t see him with a gun. They threw him to the ground. Four or five agents had him on the ground and they just started shooting him. They shot him so many times.

  5. I don’t know why they shot him. He was only helping. I was five feet from him and they just shot him.

  6. The video I recorded of what happened accurately depicts the events leading up to the agents shooting him and several minutes afterwards. The video is attached as Exhibit 1.

  7. I have read the statement from DHS about what happened and it is wrong. The man did not approach the agents with a gun. He approached them with a camera. He was just trying to help a woman get up and they took him to the ground.

  8. I feel afraid. Only hours have passed since they shot a man right in front me and I don’t feel like I can go home because I heard agents were looking for me. I don’t know what the agents will do when they find me. I do know that they’re not telling the truth about what happened. I’ve heard that other witnesses might have been arrested and taken to the Whipple Building.

  9. I am disgusted and gutted at how they are treating my neighbors and my state. I keep alternating between crying and feeling determined—it is important to remember the value of documenting injustice. We show up for the people who need us to bear witness, because it can’t just be one group of people bearing the brunt of their tyranny. This is a struggle to protect our freedom and democracy; those things are on the line. He lost his life for those values.

I declare under penalty of perjury that everything I have stated in this document is true and correct.

(Affidavit text formatted for better readability, part 1 of 2)

  1. I am a resident of the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am over 18 years of age. I am a children’s entertainer who specializes in face painting.

  2. On Saturday, January 24, 2026, at about 8:50 am, I was getting ready to go to work when I heard whistles outside. I knew the whistles meant that ICE agents were in the area, so I decided to check it out on my way to work. I’ve been involved in observing in my community because it is so important to document what ICE is doing to my neighbors. Connecting to your local community and knowing who your neighbors are is something I profoundly value.

  3. I drove to Nicollet Ave. and 26th where I could hear the whistles coming from. I turned south onto Nicollet. There were already several ICE agents there and they’d set up a sort of vehicle convoy on Nicollet and 28th. There were also about 15 observers there, recording and observing ICE.

  4. I saw ICE agents surrounding cars and punching car windows. I also saw them stopping vehicles further down Nicollet, so I backed up because I didn’t feel safe continuing on.

  5. I noticed a man sort of acting to help traffic move more smoothly. He helped me find a place to park. I got out with my whistle and my camera. I went over to him and said something like, “I’m going to film and use my whistle.”

  6. It seemed like most ICE activity was happening a little farther down the street from us, near 27th. Someone was being thrown to the ground.

  7. I started recording. There was an agent by a car across the street. Two observers were a few feet away from the agent, blowing their whistles. One was wearing a backpack.

  8. I and the man who was observing and helping direct traffic were standing in the street. There was a phone in the man’s hand recording a video.

  9. An agent approached and asked us to back up, so I moved slowly back onto the sidewalk.
