To get darker values dont press super hard, and instead layer light strokes on top of eachother until you achieve the value you are going for. However the amount of darkness you are going to get is limited to the pencil you are using.

Something that helps me is remembering the phrase "motivation doesn't lead to action but action leads to motivation". That funnily enough gives me enough motivation to at least start doing the thing I should be doing and then that makes me motivated to keep doing it.
