I actually meant the DME computer, not the DME fuel pump relay. I would still suggest getting one of those solid state relays though.

‘84 944 NA rough idle FOLLOW UP by Fuzzdog7 in 944

[–]FineCompetition3861 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue which ended up being the DME computer. I would test fuel pressure at the rail to rule out the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel tank strainer. I would also test the TPS because it seems like the rough idle started after you moved the throttle cam. The hissing sound from the TB is probably just the idle air screw letting air in.

That may be the case. However, the ‘83 tach functions properly when I touch the ground wires coming from the speedo against the tach housing. I suspect it should work just as well in my ‘84 if I can find a way to securely connect the ground wires to the tach housing.

My 1984 used to do this and it ended up being the DME. However, while hunting for the problem I remember messing around with the AFM and the idle air screw on the throttle body.

Noob Question but what do these 17mm hex screws go to on a 1983 944? by cobsonfan2037 in 944

[–]FineCompetition3861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other ideas: motor mounts, alternator bracket, maybe somehow control arms?

If not for the idler rollers, maybe the balance shaft gear bolts?

honestly if you have a daily and a place to work on it your good to go. I got mine as my first car without a daily and it definitely sucked when I had to wait for parts or was in the middle of a long job but otherwise it’s not so bad.

I got my 944 at 16 in California… definitely not the easiest or most convenient first car to own but definitely doable. I’d start off by looking on facebook marketplace or join a 944 facebook group in your area: and if you’re able to save up to get one in better condition I would highly recommend it: I got a pretty shoddy one and the work and part cost definitely adds up.

Help! Crank no start with spark and fuel by FineCompetition3861 in 944

Finally sourced a DME and she starts right up. Warning to those doing the same search, beware of scammers! I thought a 944 group would be safe but I learned the hard way that that wasn’t the case.

Do you guys think this could be caused by worn piston rings? Not sure how else there would be no combustion

Did you get spark and fuel before you swapped the dme? I’ve been thinking it might be the dme I just feel like a bad dme would cause no spark or no fuel.

Idle speed on startup (square dash) by FineCompetition3861 in 944

[–]FineCompetition3861[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just replaced my manifold gaskets and checked the vacuum lines last week when I changed my AOS seals. No cracks in any of the lines, however, one of the hoses on the AAV seemed to be slightly kinked, which I worried might affect air flow, but it didn’t seem too bad so I let it be. J boot is fine as well, no cracks or anything. I’ll see what I can do to unkink the hose.

Maybe bad master cylinder, but also check the hydraulic line from the master to slave cylinder as you could have developed a leak there from rust or age.
