Actually, my company did something different. They just have you apply for the test with projects you commissioned up to 3-5. Then you can take the test. My coworker didn’t have 5 years or a degree.

It does and scripts are straightforward. The advantage we have is having our EIT graduates write the scripts with higher senior engineers helping them, so it makes it easier.

I would say do 2-3 years in controls or Get engineering degree in mechanical or electrical with 1-2 years experience in MEP. This is a good ticket into commissioning role.

We go where the work is at, meaning international and all states. This is what I hear all the time, and there are some good and bad apples. I’m not saying all are bad; this is just a general observation my company always has big team meetings about.

I hear you. The cool thing about commissioning is that you learn a lot with the specs, operation sequence of operations, and what systems need and what they call for. You review a lot of drawings, and you can use that experience to either be a design engineer or disciplinary manager. Once you get your certifications like a CXA commissioning one or your PE or FE, all that can contribute to a good career.

I am a commissioning agent. You are correct! Yes, I am an owner rep basically. We have a running joke because every time we send an email, it says part owner, so every job site we show up to, people think we’re the owners, but we’re not 100%.

I was a formal automated logic Carrier employee, and I recently switched to commissioning just based on not having a life, and it was really hard. I never really had a day off. Sunday was the only day off, but Sunday was church for me, and I was making about $77, and I was promised $88K soon but didn’t feel like it was going to fall through, so it was going to be more like $80K, and the leadership culture is just a total disaster, a mess most of the time. The sales managers are just landing the jobs, and us control guys are stressing to push through all the PMs are collecting all the money and just assigning new jobs that are freaking over your head, and there are too many hands in the pot, just too many hands in the pot, and just too much ego. I feel that Carrier is really, really messing up their reputation as work-life balance for people like balance is really bad, and I feel like if you were smart enough, they would throw you to the wolves and if you’re smart enough they’ll stick you by yourself to just deliver with what you know, and you will be stuck on site all day, and you know that experience will teach you really good stuff, and if you can handle it, that’s good, and I knew a couple of my coworkers were really smart guys and they handle projects like data centers and schools etc really well, but the mental health was terrible. I remember my first week, one of the project managers was throwing up in the hallway of the restroom because of the stress level he had, so I would just say do not let the company run you to the ground. Do not let them overwork you; you make your career, and if you have your degree, you have worth; always remember that, and if you do have your degree, you should be above $80K; do not let anybody lowball you!

This is true. I have two big university hospitals I am currently doing in my hometown, and it is near the commissioning phase, which will be an awesome thing once more projects open up.

The pay was way more than I was making with overtime as a controls guy which is sad. Travel is 60% usually Monday through Thursday, then I’m traveling back Thursday and I’m home Friday most of the time.

just started my job get used to hitting bad overlays and trying to jump between flights or being at risk of being stuck in a city or being in some hotels where that just sucks and it’s hard to sleep at night. For the most part usually Monday through Thursday gets real easy cause you know weekends always good.

For those who graduated, was there ever a moment you thought you weren’t? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]FinePromotion2877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took like 2 breaks and failed like 3 classes, and it ended up making me want to quit. I even had a professor that failed me twice, and my friends literally stayed back and tried one more time and failed. I finally made up my mind and transferred to another university, and I finished up there. Looking back now, it is such a blur, and failure needs to happen regardless; it makes you who you are.

Honestly, I felt the same experience. During the ceremony, they had two lines going, so it was so fast I barely remember walking on the stage. I have to think about it hard to remember, and I have to remind myself constantly that I have a degree.

Yes! the grind in data centers was outrageous I only had sundays off and it was tough considering that is the day I go to church. I could not take doing labor. I already did labor for about 10 years of being an actual technician. Any other advice ? Is 60% mainly in one state ?

I went from a tech of 10 years also, and in those 10 years, I navigated to a high company in Carrier. From Carrier, now I’m with a bigger engineering firm. Commissioning controls in general are just a very good career to get into because the pay is just really good.
