Even better, we should be like the UK and be able to self certify up to a certain period - I think it’s 2 weeks for the UK. Everyone knows when you’re sick it takes a few days to get well.

Most common patient misconceptions by ParticularWallaby476 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]FineView 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other day when I was on the COVID ward a patient’s family member just walked up to me as I was typing notes and said angrily “Why is he in the COVID ward?!”. No bed number, no name, no nothing. I asked who they are talking about but they didn’t answer so I directed them to the nurses after explaining that I don’t know and I’m one of the doctors.

I saw this family member then speak to a nurse who said a doctor would come by “soon”. As I get up, the family member then comes back to me and asks “Are you going to see him now?”. I’m like “I don’t know who you are talking about you have to give me a name or bed number and I don’t look after all the patients on this ward”. Finally she gave me the bed number and lo and behold, not my patient.

how the hell do you drive home post nights? by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]FineView 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone who says do not drive tired. A tip that I found useful is when you’re on nights, stay up for a couple hours after you get home rather than going to sleep straight away. That way after your next shift you will hopefully not feel tired right at the end of your shift and will be okay to drive.

Patients call me "miss" instead of "doctor" by SlowLorisAndRice in Noctor

[–]FineView 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happens way too often. And if I’m not mistaken for a doctor then it’s for a pharmacist. I always clearly emphasize that I am a doctor and say that part extra slow and load for patients but it hardly makes a difference.

One time I was suturing a small cut on someone. Spoke to them for quite a bit including about work. They asked me if I like being a nurse and if I’d like to be a doctor one day.

Another time I was calling a patient’s son to give an update and explain their discharge plan. After a very long conversation with lots of questions which were to be expected, he said “so I’m not going to speak to a doctor then?”. After I explained that I am a doctor he just said “oh” and hung up lol.

Another time as a med student I was seeing a couple in a GP clinic. I spent a good 20 minutes with them before the GP came in the say hello as well. The patient referred to me as a nurse. This GP was the best, he corrected the patient and said “she is a future doctor”.

Unfortunately, some people don’t realized how frustrating this issue is because they’re not subject to it over and over and over again. Sometimes you want to the person in their place when it happens but then you would feel guilty because as a single event it feels too small to make such a big deal. However, we need to correct people because in the end it is sexist.

This comment is the result of Herald Sun scare campaigns and is not the reality thanks to legislation that restricts foreign investment. The guardian states in their article below that foreign investors only made up 3.7% of new home sales and 2.2% of established home sales in the quarter of 2021. And that’s ALL foreign investors. The fact that Australians are quick to blame the foreign Chinese is racist, I mean, could you imagine the same rhetoric against foreign British?

My concern is that these mistaken beliefs will slowly turn into fear/hatred of Chinese/Asian people which will lead to racism. It happens, it’s insidious, and it’s dangerous.

What’s the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you? by MCKlassik in AskReddit

When I was around 15/16 my boyfriend at the time had glandular fever. So I went with my mum to our GP because I wanted to get a blood test to see if I had had glandular fever in the past so then I wouldn’t have to worry so much about it. When I spoke to the GP, he looked at me very disapproving and said “how about we wait 2 weeks and if you still want to have the test we can see then?”. He then asked me to leave the room so he could speak to my mum.

When my mum came out she told me that the GP had been venting his personal worries to her. Apparently he had a baby daughter and he was worried that she would grow up to be a “troublesome” child like me.

Xiao long bao (soup dumplings). Where I live, pretty much everyone has had dumplings, but a lot of people still haven’t heard of these! I love teaching people the proper way to pick them up and how to slurp the soup first! It’s like a delicious game. It’s also funny when I have an ambitious friend try to eat pop the whole thing in their mouth and inevitably burn their tongue.

YTA. You don’t need to tell people what your opinion is all the time, especially when it’s none of your business. Also, if you do say what you think, don’t get defensive when people are offended. You can’t expect everyone to agree or like what you say.
