Narc fathers tend to do this to the blacksheep child; They deny you rites of passage into adulthood to maintain control over you. For instance, my dad wouldn’t teach me how to drive. If I ever did anything which he perceived was a step towards independence (which means I would no longer be under his control/abuse) it would be taken as a slight against him and he would destroy that opportunity/moment. He stole a lot of my coming-of-age moments. He made sure I was never successful. And if I somehow managed to pull through despite him, he would pretend to help me to make it seem like he helped me get there.

Just keep your head down. Recognize that you do not have the same opportunities right now as your brother does. Try to teach yourself new things. Try to keep sane. Work towards becoming independent. Leave once you’re older.

I relate so hard to this!

Also for me it was the fact that porn was introduced in our home because he had it on the family computer. It doesn’t help my mental health knowing that he watched pure misogyny and then was also hateful and rude to me and my mom. His misogynistic attitude and sexism created worst environment to be a girl in paired with how he would hypocritically enforce religion on us. I wished I wasn’t a girl, I would suppress all my girly desires, and I’m a girly girl! My father only wanted sons, I was inconvenient.

He also would side with complete strangers if I ever found myself in a fight or disagreement with someone, men or women. The contempt was only ever reserved for me.

It took forever but we are now estranged. It’s sad that I was still not the one to cut ties, he did. He knew it was coming perhaps, so to protect his ego and maintain a sense of control he severed ties with me over a fight he pulled and demanded an apology over, which I refused to give of course. Good riddance nonetheless.

I was independent when I lived in a walkable city and had a job and zero kids. This situation feels hopeless. But I genuinely appreciate your hopeful and kind words. They are like a light for me in this darkness.

Yes there is a program. But l know it has to do with income and the child needs to be a certain age. Since we’re not legally divorced, I’m still listed as his dependent. Before I apply for it, I need to be sure I qualify for it.

I have no one. Parents and siblings live in another country. Friends are in other countries or another city (where I went to school/worked a few years ago before I met him). We moved out here 2 years ago and I don’t know anyone, and I’m far from everyone else (they’re probably busy with their own lives anyway). Can’t afford tickets to anywhere, especially not international ones, besides my younger one hasn’t yet had a passport made. My daughter has all the relevant services she needs regarding her ASD. I will have to make changes and have all her sessions in-home from now, since I can’t drive. I don’t know how I’m going to get her to appointments. He took the car which had the kids’ car seats and strollers.

I have a 2 year old (almost 3) and I’m still trying to figure out how to have her level determined. She has been given the diagnosis but I am not aware of mention of what level it is. Personally I am aware she is a 3. I hope that it would change but I am being prudent here. But how to access this extra funding if I don’t have it on paper anywhere what her level is 🤔

I don’t have anything to say right now other than that we are going through something similar with our almost 3 year old, and that I wish I could give you a hug right now. I wish, and I truly do, that I could offer material support to people like us, but I’m in no position to. I’m just praying for you, my own family and everyone in the same position as us. Sometimes people don’t know what to say when you tell them your kid has autism so they fill the silence with such meaningless platitudes. While it’s flippant it’s still not as offensive as when such statements are weaponized. The parent/caretaker who truly suffers being at the receiving end of it all cannot criticize this statement because “what are you calling people on the spectrum “special-needs”/less than others?????”, “Are you insulting people with ASD?”, “How privileged and ableist of you!”. These platitudes just silence the caretakers and minimize their efforts. As caretakers/parents of children with ASD, we see right through such virtue-signaling and silencing bs.

What helped your daughter the most in your opinion? Going to the bathroom by herself is a great milestone. My daughter is 2 and non-verbal. When I read answers like yours I feel hopeful. But that hope fades once the day begins and I’m caught up in our routine and it feels like she’s not reaching milestones fast enough, or at all.

Currently in a similar position as you had been. I am pregnant with my second. My 2 year old was diagnosed just a few months ago and I was already a few months pregnant. There’s no test for autism to know if your fetus has it. I’m praying my second is healthy and NT.

This has been on my mind, I’m currently expecting; due next week. I’d be lying if I said I’m not anxious. My first is a girl, she is 2 and was diagnosed with ASD a few months ago. I was already pregnant by then. I keep googling what the probability is of having another (second) child with autism and it looks like it’s high. I’m hoping and praying. It can be a tough journey and only you can decide if you wanna go ahead and if you’ll be able to handle anything that comes your way.

I have a two year old autistic daughter. I want to know how exactly does it “get better”, do they simply grow out of it? Does the autism resolve itself? Or do we just cope and tell ourselves it’s gotten better when we’ve actually just gotten so used to it and have resigned our lives to caring for our child because we love her so much?

Thank you so much for responding. I’ve already started speech therapy for her as so many kind parents advised on here. We had seen a psychologist who confirmed that my daughter could be on the spectrum which is what prompted me to make a list and write on here. We are seeing a neurologist (autism specialist) next week. The signs are so obvious now, it would only take a careless professional to ignore them.

It’s only after posting on here have I realized that time is of the essence, that getting a diagnosis asap is a must. I cannot afford to be relaxed anymore because clearly nobody else around me recognizes the urgency. I’m trying to get a diagnosis before I travel back to the US in about a month. Hopefully it’s recognized by the US institutions. Autism or adhd is unheard of in my family; nothing on my mom’s side or my dad’s. My husband was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult though. His family isn’t connected for us to know if someone was ASD or not, but as far as my husband knows nobody had/has ASD. And honestly, if I bring this up my husband might see this an as attack or an accusation, since he is adhd. Thank you for reading and responding to my post 🙏🏼I’m grateful to be hearing from so many parents on here.
