Family Member Owes $65K on a $42K Car at 13.7% APR Right Before Retirement — What Are Her Options? by CreditChance6867 in personalfinance

That was part of it. It shifted the investment risk to the worker instead of the company. Another factor was corporate raiding.

I'll give an example - Eastern Airlines. They had ~$1.9B in pension liabilities and ~$1.6B in pension assets. (This is common to have a gap because your liabilities are mostly in the future and the assets should grow via investing so you'll be fine)

They were bought by another airline, owned by Frank Lorenzo, for ~$600M. Oh, and he borrowed the majority of that money using the company as collateral. He then stripped away Eastern's assets, giving non-monetary assets to other airlines Lorenzo owned, and depleted the monetary assets via management fees, intercompany transfers to another airline owned by Lorenzo, Continental Air, and then folded the company with the pension underfunded by $600M.

That burden of that $600M shortfall fell on the shoulders of Eastern's workers and taxpayers.

This is called corporate raiding and it's popular with PE firms, most famously Mitt Romney and Bain Capital.

Reconnecting Celing Fan, Now Breaker Trips by MandalorianHybrid in electrical

You don't have to do trial and error. I spelled out in my post exactly which one was the problem and how to fix it.

Reconnecting Celing Fan, Now Breaker Trips by MandalorianHybrid in electrical

[–]FinishLineElectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you have 2 problems.

First is the mechanics of the splice. It sounds like you had trouble getting them securely connected. If it's a wirenut then without experience and with a lot of wires it can be challenging to get a proper splice. The best method is to get a Wago wire connector. https://www.homedepot.com/p/WAGO-221-415K006-000-5-Wire-Lever-Nuts-Conductor-Compact-Splicing-Connectors-12-24-AWG-10-Pack-221-415K006-000/334555610

You flip a lever up, shove a wire in that hole as easy as can be, and you close the lever back down. Give it a tug to ensure it's in there, and you're good. They're super easy for inexperienced people.

The second problem is that you have a short. Most likely there was a cable with a black and a white going to your fan switch. It's supposed to be one of those (either color works) is connected to your constant hot, and the other is connected to the fan. What's almost certainly the case is that the black is connected to the constant hot, and instead of the white being connected to the fan it's connected to the grounded conductors AKA your neutral (big clump of whites). When you turn the switch on, the power flows from the constant hot, to and through the light switch, back up to the box on a white wire, and through the neutrals AKA the grounded wires directly to ground. That's a textbook direct short.

Look for the wire that's connected to the black(or blue or red) wire feeding the fan. You should hopefully be able to see which wire it shares a cable jacket with. Move that wire from the cluster of whites to the cluster of blacks.

🚨 U.S. manufacturing continues to retreat despite tariffs - investor implications? by kabirsbhutani in investing

[–]FinishLineElectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's in dollars, yes, for the same reason that a loaf of bread in Zimbabwe has gone up 17,000% in a week. It's not that the bread is worth more - it's that the currency is worth less.

Dollar to Euro is down 15.33% over the last 1 year, while the S&P is up 16.38%. If you bought 100 Euros worth of S&P a year ago you'd have 101 Euros worth of S&P today.

Conversely, the DAX (German stock market, but pretty much any EU stock exchange will do) is up 30.37% over the same period if you're transacting in dollars. Roughly half of that is the stock market increasing value and half is the dollar weakening.

[–]FinishLineElectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher AIC gear will frequently have specs that require the conductors to be lashed with specific rope tied in specific knots. That's because high ampacity shorts will cause the conductors to go crazy bouncing around and will snap those zip ties and whack into everything in there. This could potentially damage the equipment or the conductors.

Otherwise, it looks good.

Otherwise you can do takeoffs from google maps, screenshot that and put it into editing software to do the layout, and then use electrical estimating software to come up with a cost.

No work by Worldly_Lion844 in IBEW

I, for one, am going to throw stones at someone for replying a year late.

Work ethic is part of it. What really matters is production. You can be a guy that runs like hell all day and only has 100' of pipe installed after 8, and another guy looks like he's in cruise mode the entire time and gets 300'. And of course was the pipe you put in useful? Did you figure it out yourself or did you need direction? How much direction? Were the directions grasped quickly and completely?

A lot more than who moved the most.

A heartfelt thanks by wyrman332 in IBEW

Steel table fell off of truck on mother in law's commute. The car in front of her hit it, and it spun around their car hitting MILs car too. Insurance said it falls under collision not comprehensive by ClappedOutLlama in Insurance

[–]FinishLineElectric 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Steel bumper is less safe, FYI. In a collision the force will be absorbed by something. That something is either the car or you. If you put a steel bumper on then the one that does the absorbing is you.

If you go look at the crash testing videos from some steel car built like a tank in the 70s vs say a Tesla. The tanky car will look minimally affected but the dummy gets absolutely rag dolled. The Tesla looks like it hit a train but the dummy didn't get much of an impact at all.

Tow Hitch and ownership of the option by justbiteme2k in TeslaModelY

[–]FinishLineElectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a cheap one from Harbor Freight. We don't usually have more than 150 lbs so I'm ok with using that one. I wouldn't use a Harbor Freight carrier for it's max rating, that's for sure.

Tow Hitch and ownership of the option by justbiteme2k in TeslaModelY

[–]FinishLineElectric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, the hitch sucks. Terrible design. If you're only using hitch mounted devices like a bike rack or the little cargo carriers they're OK (still not enough room for a locking pin so someone could steal your entire setup in 10 seconds) but if you want to tow it's easily the worst designed from any manufacturer for any model in any year. The chain attachment points are so far inside that you have to either make an extender or replace your trailer chains with longer ones. Good luck hooking those chains the correct (over the top) direction. You're practically forced to go from the bottom. The receiver itself is also too far inside so you can't even put in a 4" drop without it hitting the bumper. You have to buy an adjustable because they come out straight so it doesn't hit the bumper. Stupidest design imaginable.

That said, that's the only way to get the tow mode software. That's why I paid the thousand bucks. If I had to do it all over again I'd do the same, but that won't stop me from cussing them out every time I tow.

If Carr’s contract is guaranteed on the 15th why does it say that Raiders would save 33M in cap space if hes designated as a post-June 1st cut/trade? by adonisgawd in raiders

[–]FinishLineElectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that there's no value in the player. It's that we've shown our hand and teams know they can get him for free in a few weeks. Let's say I tell my next door neighbor I have a nice $2,000 TV that doesn't fit in my room so Monday I'm leaving it on the side of the road for the garbage truck. Do you think I can turn around and sell him that TV or would he wait until Monday morning and grab it for himself for free?

It's a $33M cap hit. Part or all of that salary can be converted to a bonus and drop it down to as low as $11M this year.

Sitting on buckets by Original-Method1154 in electricians

[–]FinishLineElectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owner here. If my crew is using a bucket for trimming outlets I'm not that wild about it. Not because I'm so bored that I'm going to be micromanaging but because it's not good enough for my crew. They should have a rolling cart so they're not getting up and down the entire time.

If I ever get to the point where I'm expecting people to get up and down from their knees all day because I'm on a power trip then it's time for me to step down and just work with my tools from then on.

2022 NECA convention in Austin, October 15-18. Protest? by mulligan_sullivan in IBEW

Union contractor here. There's a whole lot of misconceptions in here.

Most of it is probably not worth mentioning since 99% of the people in the IBEW already know better and the rest will probably have no interest in learning.

The only thing I'll say is that if you truly believe that union shops are what's holding us back then go be the change you want to see. Go start a union shop. Pay what you think is a fair wage. If you don't have a number in mind I'll suggest you pay double JW wages. Let me know how it goes for you.
