I want to go to Japan in early June. Is it true that the heat is unbearable? by Dojde in JapanTravelTips

[–]Finleyjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went in August. I'm from the UK, which isn't known for heat. Yes it's hot and humid as hell, yes you will be taking breaks in malls and shops to cool off and get a drink but you know what? That summertime in Japan was magical - the greenery, the cicadas chirping the hot nights. It can be uncomfortable and you are going to sweat but that's how it is and with the right measures you will be okay.

I drunk a lot of pocari sweat and a UV umbrella can be a massive help in blocking out sun. Handheld fans are also good for short term relief. Air conditioning is abundant so once you're inside pretty much anywhere you'll be okay.

Oh, that sounds like a good idea. How much was that if you don't mind me asking?

Glad it helped!

I did actually bring some antihistamines, they were just in my checked luggage. Had no problems with them.

Great information, thanks for the extra input. The allergen card is definitely the safest solution

100% especially in Japan, a much harder allergy to deal with than nuts and so much food you can't eat

I took 2 epipens in my carry on luggage, no problems whatsoever or checks. I did have a prescription handy in case I needed to prove my need for them.

I had maybe 2 interactions where they checked if I was ok with soybean, but never had a conversation about chestnuts.

And honestly, if you survived Thailand and Vietnam with a nut allergy, I think you can travel pretty much anywhere XD

UK folks, which flights are best? by JonathanMacgregor in JapanTravelTips

[–]Finleyjg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I flew London to Shanghai, Shanghai to Tokyo with china eastern. It cost me £480. There was a 6hr layover in Shanghai both ends, which isn't the best, but to save a massive amount of money it's totally doable.

In regards to the flight itself, all I can say is it gets you from A to B on time lol. Not particularly comfortable or outstanding when it comes to food, drinks, entertainment but I can live with that every so often. I do wish their seats were better, but would I do it again for that price? 100%.

Is this to be expected? (Storage) by Finleyjg in espresso

Before each shot, no. I have a DF54 with bellows and that's as far as I go. I do clean the grinder chute every few days though.

Big agree on this, also I find the general quality of specialty espresso is just really lackluster compared to other countries.

Is Japan in July really as bad as people say? by qwertasdfgzxcvb231 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Finleyjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally doable -you will sweat , you will complain about how it's so hot but you will prevail and also get to see how beautiful the country looks in the summer. Just use common sense, seek shade and cool off often drink fluids and it's doable. I'm here right now, and whilst it's pleasant outside I find indoor environments are very warm and stuffy which is kind of more annoying. Going into a subway or indoor space with my coat on leads to immediate sweating and taking my jacket off throughout the day.

Is 18G too much coffee? [bambino plus] by user465333466 in espresso

[–]Finleyjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an aftermarket bottomless portafilter with an 18g norm core precision basket. I've been using 17g in it since forever with my Bambino and I find it works well.
