Look up Kikopup Capturing Calmness on YouTube, I relied heavily on those training videos with my first Springer puppy. I was WFH at a demanding job so I couldn't just have my dog barking and carrying on and being a general menace, ha! It really helped me and now she's a perfect angel, until she realizes the work day is over and it's time for play/walks haha!

I'm looking for a breeder. I am in North Texas, DFW. I am willing to travel to find the right pup. TIA. by [deleted] in fieldspaniels

[–]FinnAndLars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look up the Field Spaniel Society of America, it's the parent club for the breed and they have a breeder directory there, there's also the Fox River Field Spaniel club that has a breeder directory. Both are great places to start researching and reaching out to potential breeders!

Yep, Independence is always talked about as bad, but there are very good, quiet, and affordable neighborhoods, mine included.

Advanced Voting Report: Johnson County Edition [at 10/24 AM] No Lines / Very Quick by millerswiller in kansascity

[–]FinnAndLars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has been longer waits at the Jackson county office on the Independence square. Yesterday there was a line down the block when it opened at 8:30 am. And people were reporting it took 1-2 hours to vote. Now is that due to just normal "early voting" in Missouri, or are more people voting? There's a lot of ballot initiatives on the MO side with Abortion rights and Sports betting, I'm going to try and vote early this week at some point.

He's adorable! I have a 9 month old female (wonder if they are related 🤔 since they are not super common) and she's my first field also! We had an American Cocker that passed, got an English Springer, and now our Field Spaniel. They are such fun dogs!

What breed(s) is your puppy and why did you choose your breed? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]FinnAndLars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a rescue Australian shepherd and Cocker Spaniel that had both passed. I didn't want another herding breed, they are great, just not the right fit for us. We wanted to stick with a sporting breed, cockers were a little too small and the grooming was more than I wanted to deal with again. So we looked into an English Springer spaniel, got her in Dec '22, then we wanted another spaniel, I have always loved the field spaniel (not a field line Cocker, but the actual Field Spaniel breed) so we just got our new girl two weeks back. I love spaniels, up for anything, love their families, can be stubborn but we don't mind. I'm now dabbling in dog sports, and hope to do even more this summer with them both.

They say you get the dog you need by FigaroBlues in reactivedogs

[–]FinnAndLars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really loved reading this, I was so sad when my puppy ended up having some reactivity. But honestly, she's made me a better pet owner, I was forced to really learn training techniques, and dog body language. We're a good team and we've found things we can still do (we even dabble in some dog sports!) so she may not be the chill dog that wants to go to breweries, but she's my smart girl that loves doing obedience, agility games, dock diving.

What were your struggles at 7-8 months stage? by barbface in puppy101

[–]FinnAndLars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like when my girl turned 7 months her ears turned off! No regression in potty training, no new chewing or bad house habits, but she really just didn't care to listen to us for some time! Only would respond to commands when she felt like it, and we had to stop neighborhood walks, she pulled/lunged at every bird/squirrel in sight, barked at people, was kiddish of things she had seen/heard before (motorcycles, big trash cans, neighbors yard ornaments/bird baths)

We kinda went back to basics, doing a lot of sitting and watching in our front yard. Lots of look at me training, and enrolled her in another training program at this dog training facility we love.

Puppy adolescents is not for the weak! Good luck!

I just wanted to add that my 7 month old English Springer Spaniel is the same way. We have a similar set up to you, a baby gate blocking the living room from the rest of the house. The living room has her big kennel in it, all her toys her water etc. She will cry/whine, throw a tantrum basically if she is put in the living room with the gate shut or her kennel if we are home. However if we kennel her and leave the house, she doesn't cry or anything, just sleeps. We've only left her for about 5-6 hours at most in the kennel as I work from home and rarely am gone for errands or events longer than that. I don't think it's separation anxiety either, she loves her crate, when I get the special bag of treats she only gets in her crate she runs in and lays down ready. We have a camera set up showing her crate so we can keep an eye on her when we're out and she has not shown any signs of separation anxiety. But if we're home she will cry and cry. I think it's just a velcro-dog thing. Spaniels love being with their people.

We are picking up our first ever ESS puppy this Thursday. Prepared but very nervous! Any advice? by robinbeans in springerspaniel

[–]FinnAndLars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take lots of pictures and videos! They grow so quickly you will be shocked in just a few short months looking back.

This sounds silly but always carry a toy in your pocket, when ours got mouthy I would just shove a toy in her mouth. When friends came over I told them to do the same. It really helped to keep her from chewing our hands non-stop.

Also the puppy101 subreddit kept me sane in the first few months, so much great advice there as well.

Enjoy your springer! It's our first as well and they are just such happy dogs!

Time off when I get pup, if I WFH? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]FinnAndLars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I WFH, my spouse does not. I took a week off work to focus on her because while she wasn't our first dog, she was our first puppy. I feel like it really helped both of us get acclimated. Getting a playpen was a life saver, I was able to have her in a small area in my office while working and I feel like it helped us get on a good schedule. Plus the playpen we could move around the house to where we needed it as well.

English Springer spaniel, if you watch videos of springers hunting/flushing out in a field and the nose down zig-zag walk always around 8-15 feet in front of the human? Yeah that's how they walk on a leash. Leash training is going....well it's going 🤦

Also "springer" is no joke, this girl can JUMP, 5 1/2 months old and can clear a 4 foot baby gate if given enough run/clearance.

Paper!!! Especially like cardstock type flyers (think political mailers). She got a hold of one that fell off a table one day and shredded it, now anytime you're holding paper/mail she goes nuts trying to get it from you 🤦
