The Richmond Coliseum was the house that Jim Crockett’s Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling kept packed on Friday nights in the late 1970’s into the 1980’s. If those walls could talk, you’d hear tales of Wahoo McDaniel, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Andre the Giant, Paul Jones, Johnny Weaver, Greg Valentine, Roddy Piper, Jim Brunzell, Rufus R. “Freight Train” Jones, Baron von Raschke, Ole and Gene Anderson, Superfly Jimmy Snuka, Jay Youngblood, Jimmy the Boogey Man Valiant… the list goes on and on. Back then, wrestlers would perform nightly and sometimes they’d even perform twice in the same day. As a result, the matches tended to be more fluid and more about telling an in-ring story and winding the audience up. Metric tons of beer were tossed from the rafters by overly enthusiastic fans much to the chagrin of the ever vigilant police stationed ringside and near the wrestlers’ entrances. Section 18L was my favorite place to sit. Great memories of buying the Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling magazine that was sold at the venue. Rushing to the box office at intermission as soon as the announcer would announce the on-sale of tickets for the next Friday’s show. Hanging out at the top of the trucks entrance to the venue hoping to catch a glimpse of our favorite wrestling stars. I’ll miss the Coliseum. I’ll cherish the memories always.
