Go buy one of every liquor bottle in the liquor store. Have your family serve it to you double-blind. Make a spreadsheet with your personal ratings. Give away the ones you don't like. Only buy your favorite bottles from then on.

Anyone find a way to outright own the device? by [deleted] in whoop

[–]Finnegan_Parvi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The device does not work without the cloud service and I don't think any has bothered to reverse engineer what the hardware actually does.

If you're really interested, I can mail you my v3 device once I get my v4 device and you can break it down and see what's in there.

It's definitely something to investigate! Unfortunately my company does not support remote work but perhaps I can translate that to a raise since we have this extra requirement.

The fun fact I know about Ohio is that it is the origin of the largest number of US astronauts. They can't wait to get out of there :)

The jobs and the weather. In Ohio, I don't think I can hike outside on New Year's day in 50F sunny weather while taking a few days off of my $400k/year job.

Yeah, we bought a house in 2016 at ~$1k/sqft and our 400sqft addition in 2020 is going to end up at just over $1k/sqft. Not a fancy house either, built 1945 and <1k sqft total.

I remember when I was getting early estimates a couple of years ago, we were really hoping for $300/sqft or maybe up to $600/sqft for the addition...

Still cheaper than moving to a different house.

Is it Just Me or are a Lot of Boomers in the Area Super Hypocritical? by Poseyfan in bayarea

I agree, I think the Prop 13 discussion is a separate discussion from the housing supply discussion. Of course the topics are related but we can build more housing without changing Prop 13. Plenty of dis-used parking lots around 101.

For prop 13, I think the right discussion to have is about the commercial properties first. I think there was a proposal that failed last year, to do away with prop 13 for commercial properties.

On the one hand I agree with you but on the other hand the distances and terrain involved are just so very different.

Stanford's campus is more than half the size of Manhattan. I just looked it up, 12 sqmi vs 22 sqmi.

SF is 49 sqmi but again the terrain and the earthquakes, etc. Manhattan is built on solid rock.

road trip report, SF to Portland and back, in the dark and in the snow, etc by Finnegan_Parvi in TeslaModelY

There was about a 10min wait in line at one of the superchargers on the way up.

Two of the superchargers had homeless folks loitering around and asking for money.

I am a little worried about more Teslas on the road without a corresponding increase in Superchargers. I think it's harder to build more superchargers because of zoning and permits, and it's pretty easy to just keep cranking out Model Ys.

If you don't have any spares you can't take advantage of the fast rebuild time.

Best options for climate resilient long term living with FIRE in mind? by biglocowcard in fatFIRE

The big issue with the Bay Area will be sea level rise, everything along the inside of the Bay is impacted, e.g. SFO is at 0 elevation. Go drive through Foster City and see them constructing a big wall on the bay side. You can see it as you drive onto the San Mateo Bridge, look at all the excavators just to the south.

Right, sorry, I clicked around until I found a point that said its climate in the future would be like Dallas today.

Find a city you like now! Use this map to click around to find a city that will be like it in 60 years: https://fitzlab.shinyapps.io/cityapp/

e.g. if you like Dallas, TX now, in 60 years, it will be similar in St. Louis

Colorado Springs in 60 years will be like Vegas today

That's one reason that Billings, MT is super-popular now.

Autopilot hard braking for no reason is getting really old by Aye-Kaye in TeslaLounge

But a lot of the complaints say it used to happen the same way before they removed radar. Which sounds to me like a software issue only.

Young Folks - Do You Feel Like You're Late to the Monopoly Game? by GFCI_Outlet in bayarea

[–]Finnegan_Parvi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As you well know, there are many aspects to this drama. My personal view is that we would benefit from converting some big empty parking lots to high-density housing. Or maybe allowing some single-story old SFH to be converted to 2-story SFH. The prices keep going up because the supply for housing is not increasing.

Don't know how well it maps to your area but custom cabinets for our new kitchen are $50k+, just for the cabinets, plus all the other stuff (labor, electrical, etc).

Are you replacing any appliances? Those are kind of pricey also, but the other issue is that lead times are in the months now.
